Damn, I was looking forward to a Richard Fairbrass cameo in ESB:R 😉

I’m sure we’d all be fascinated in seeing some of your test footage of the Wampa at some point. Take heart that even the whole ILM team couldn’t get the Wampa to work back in the day.

The Wampa accounts for what, 30-40 seconds of the movie? In the grand scheme of things I don’t think it’s going to make that big of a difference if he scraps what he had planned for it.

I got my calendar ready for this release date. As soon as we have confirmation of release date, I will make sure that day is clear.

I get more the feeling that the next update IS the release.

i have a suggestion! lets all just find something else to do, and Adywan will probably let us know when its done.

ah, nevermind.

JawsTDS just released an awesome PAL Gout based upscale trilogy and it is definitely worth the watch - gives a nice 90s home video feel in HD. Perfect for anyone needing to watch the theatrical ESB before ESB:R drops.

You’re supposed to say “this isn’t a suggestion but” before you make your suggestion.

Shouldn’t the change list be updated by removing #12

We’ll need an all-new finalized change list anyway. And who reads first posts?

I think since suggestions have been closed for a long time we should just take what ady gives us.

I’m with you on this one.

After seeing some of the comments after my last post, both here and on facebook, i need to address a few misconceptions about the wampa and what it was being used for:

1- There is no test footage of the wampa. It didn’t get to a stage where everything was complete in order to start any test shooting. It only got as far as the costume fitting stage.

2- It wasn’t being built to add any extra scenes into the film. The editing of the cave scene is being reverted back to how it was in 1980. The extra inserts of the Wampa eating etc have all been taken out (apart from the added arm in the one shot where it is approaching luke as he cuts himself free). It worked better the way it was in 1980 when we only got glimpses of the Wampa. So the suit was created to replace the two shots in the original cave scene( the “sliding” wampa shot and the final lunge where it is a completely different design from the one we saw attacking luke originally) . It was also going to replace the first two puppet shots so that there was a consistent looking wampa throughout.

3- release a version now without the Wampa and then another one later with it added once i can get it working. This is something that won’t be happening. From ESB onward there will be only one version released of any of the films in HD and SD formats.

4- Get someone else to wear the suit. It was built specifically to fit my wife. I can’t even get my head into it without all the padding. Unless someone was the exact same dimensions then it wouldn’t fit. It would require months of work to modify it to fit anyone else, which would include rebuilding the whole skull and bodysuit.

But, there may be a glimmer of hope. After making my last post about the Wampa cancellation, a few ideas came to mind that might enable me to use the wampa for just the two cave shots needed, so i haven’t given up on it fully anymore. well, not just yet. If these ideas work, then i can just replace those two shots and keep the original puppet ones at the beginning. I’ve been modifying the face slightly ( repainting the horns to be the lighter grey on the puppet along with the end of the one horn being chipped off) and i will be doing some tests over the weekend, If it works, then i can finish the dirtying up and adding the wax ice on the fur and shoot the thing towards the end of next week. If it doesn’t then i can just get everything rendered out and release it. It’s still a very long shot that this might work, so don’t get your hopes up.

Ady may have thought of this - but I would like to throw it out there - what about auditions to find someone who can fit the suit and withstand the heat & claustrophobia?

Yes! Yes! As someone who saw ESB on the first showing on the first day of release in 1980 - I can say unequivocally that I have no problem with the Tippet Puppet whatsoever, it even made us jump out of our seats on first viewing. IMHO it works well so no need to replace it. Marrying those two later cave shots (which never did look that great) with the puppet would be spectacular and I wish you all the speed and luck to your talent that you can muster to pull it off.

You will find a way if possible. And if not, then it will still be terrific to be the way it was back in '80.

But if you do manage to get even the head to work, replacing this shot with the head moving between the ice pillars would be brilliant.

I think it’s great news you are having a go at it! I really hope you somehow get it to work.

I think replacing the wampa glimpse as it walks past the ice formation is probably the easiest.

That approaching shot would be harder but there are options (I think it could be just cut alltogether and removed)

The third shot of old sad eyes is ok but…

One can dream… I wish you the best of luck with it I hope you can pull it off.

I’m glad to hear you’re giving the wampa one last shot, more for your sake than anything (I can only imagine your frustration at creating the costume only to not be able to use it). I hope you’re able to make use of it yet. Best of luck!

Thanks for that update adywan. Glad to hear that all is not yet lost on the new Wampa footage front, and will remain cautiously hopeful that things can pan out for the ‘cave’ shot replacements eventually.

From what we’ve seen, your version definately makes for a good match with the ‘roaring’ puppet design overall - and it’s good to know that one of it’s horn tips will be broken off too. The nose and visible face-parts of the ‘roaring’ puppet Wampa seem to have a roughened, yellowish finish with darkened bags under the eyes, and a touch of that would help to give your version a very close resemblance indeed, if your tests work out okay.

I’m also really pleased to see that you’re intending to include the additional shot of the Wampa’s arm (when Luke cuts himself down), as that was an SE addition I especially liked - and I’m hopeful that you were able to give it’s black ‘claw pads’ a more fleshy colouration in the end, like the original prop claw had.

Good luck, and kudos to your wife for her efforts and continued tolerations! 😃
