I would bet any amount of money that Leia’s interrogation scene was revised by someone other than George Lucas from whatever he had intended it to be. If George ever proved one thing as a filmmaker it’s that he’s so on the nose about everything. I don’t think there’s any chance he conceived of leaving that scene off the screen.

However, George was a very good visual director. I’m sure it was his idea to have the camera follow the footsteps of the guards as they marched away from the scene, and I’ve always liked the way that was shot.

Well, in the third draft, when the heroes find her, Leia is unconscious and beaten so badly Han actually gapes in horror at the sight of her. And Ralph McQuarrie storyboards from that time actually show Leia in a tattered dress and bare-breasted during the chasm swing.

Certainly Lucas wanted to leave it a bit ambiguous what happened “behind closed doors,” but in earlier iterations there was no escaping the point that it was extremely violent.

I just saw someone try to justify the prequel characters being flawed because they’re “supposed to be that way.” FML

I wonder if the Matrix sequels get this much defense? 😉

Actual quote from the Matrix Reloaded:
“The first Matrix I designed was quite naturally perfect, it was a work of art, flawless, sublime. A triumph equaled only by its monumental failure. The inevitability of its doom is apparent to me now as a consequence of the imperfection inherent in every human being.”

I can’t totally hate a movie that straight-up admits that the first Matrix was an exception.

The original gets enough for all of them. 😛

Ouch. I don’t have any issues with the original film.

I’m kinda getting sick of all this Star Wars shit.

I haven’t had a desire to watch anything Star Wars related for months now. Not to sound like some of the more curmudgeonly members of this board but I genuinely believe that it is because there is no longer an overarching vision (however flawed) which governs this universe. The movies are filled with things that the filmmakers (who are Star Wars fans) want to see, or believe that the other Star Wars fans in the audience want to see. The corporate impulse, which has always hovered over the franchise, has become the soul of the franchise. I doubt that even The Last Jedi can return the franchise to its previous state, since Rian Johnson is not the architect of the ST. The best thing to do is either ignore the new films or view them merely as enjoyable products rather than artistic statements, something that most of the moviegoing public has no problem with anyway.

With that bit of cynicism out of the way, my honest opinion is that I’d rather live in a universe with TFA and RO than one without them, since TFA gave us the big three again alongside some good new characters and another great John Williams score. Who knows how many more of those we will get, with Williams in his 80’s. This past year has shown us that we shouldn’t take time for granted, so I’m even okay with moving fast on the rest of the ST. I’d appreciate if they held the spinoffs for after the ST, since I think that dilutes interest in the ongoing story, but if that’s the price of an ST with Williams and Hamill and Ridley et all, then so be it. Besides, if they fall short of our high expectations there is always the potential to fanedit 😉

a overarching vision was 100 percent wrong with star wars after 1980

I for one thought that empire strikes back was great…till the I am your father scene happened

I don’t find the idea of darth vader being lukes father to be a particularly good idea that benefited vader as a character…more like the beginning of his decline.

He never quit became vader again till rogue one where luke was no where near him

This is a very good point! Vader was never truly as evil and heartless in later films as he was before he merged with Anakin Skywalker.

Vader was at his Vaderist in The Empire Strikes Back.
