I’m with Fang. I think the 2020 deal is the hold up. Just my opinion

Well, you’re entitled to your opinion. But it couldn’t be more obviously wrong. Disney has told you over and over again, explicitly and implicitly, that they have no plans…zero…of releasing the OOT.

Kathleen Kennedy is George’s evil minion at LFL. If you think she’s ever going to cross George, you’re obviously mistaken.

But don’t Sith apprentices always turn on their masters eventually? 😉

Source??? What Kathleen Kennedy said in no way implies there may not be a future set with George’s preferred cut and the originals. Nothing in her response or the question implied the OUT whether it was intended or not.

Practically nobody is interested in a special special edition.

Based on Reddit, more people are interested in this than the OUT. Every time I see the subject of the different cuts come up anywhere other than here, someone inevitably says some variation of “the unaltered versions would be nice, but I’d rather they just get rid of the bad changes and update the CGI for the rest so that it will match the new movies”, and then everyone else upvotes it.

This is why I can’t stand the Star Wars reddit. It’s full of PT and SE worshippers who won’t stop posting about their tattoos and stick figure families. I see tons of people on there saying “most of the changes were great, just get rid of Greedo shooting and it will be perfect.”

I can understand their sentiment. After all, with Mike Verta’s project completed the original Star Wars has been well restored, and the original elements to the other two are in far better shape. The OOT will eventually be released, if not by Disney then by obsessive fans. If Disney wants to completely update the SE for a new generation, that would be par for the course with what we’ve gotten previously and continue the tradition of trying to keep these films relevant to the masses. It’s actually a fascinating experiment which has been going on since '77, and a part of me is saddened that Disney won’t continue that. I suspect that if there weren’t constant revisions, The OT would be increasingly be seen as a cultural artifact today, rather than a part of an ongoing story. The only reason I’m against the SE is that the OOT isn’t officially available.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

I don’t know if this has been covered or addressed here yet, but recently I have been bombarded with Disney Movies Anywhere adds featuring ROTJ with the tag line “theatrical version” attached at the bottom. Curious, I read a few reviews which confirmed that it is not the original.
So what does this say about the future of the real Original Trilogy if Disney is now referring to the SE versions as theatrical?

It’s definitely interesting, but those are the Special Editions. Take a look at the runtimes.

Oh there’s no doubt, it’s just not labelled with the right year. The poster art is 1997 though of course.

the 1997 special edition was in the theater. So what they told you is true, from a certain point of view.

Author

^ That’s correct. Technically Disney isn’t lying, they’re forgetting to mention, it’s the 1997 Theatrical Special Editions.

The 1997 editions however are not available either

Oh yeah, true, Georgie boy changed them sooooo many times, I had a Freudian slip!

Interesting how this problem of ESB and RotJ being labeled “theatrical version” was at first isolated to amazon and has now (apparently) extended to Disney’s service as well.

Author

Yeah. I feel for the unlucky soul who buys them not knowing the nasty surprise they are in for…

So why the hell is this still happening, anyway? First the amazon thing and now disney.

Can’t they get in trouble for that? False advertisement. At the least they should refund everybody’s money who bought it hoping for the theatrical. Maybe that would even send a message if a ton of people bought it labeled theatrical and returned it because it wasn’t.

I just looked up ESB on disney’s site. The release date listed is June 20, 1980 (the day it went into wide release), but the running time is still the SE.

It doesn’t say “theatrical version” there or on RotJ’s page either, though. RotJ also lists the original release date with the SE running time.

Nope. It’s actually labeled correctly

Edit: I just saw your post correcting yourself. We posted nearly at the same time

As far as I know, the original Star wars trilogy is the only series of films where they’re not being advertised as being what they actually are, the special editions. Even Lucas’s other films are labeled as special editions or directors cuts but not Star Wars. That’s so bizzare

To be fair none of the video releases since 2000 have the Special Edition label. Lucas was definitely trying to create the mindset that these were now the definitive versions, subsequent revisions aside.
