TFA: A Gentle Restructure (Released) — Page 30

Given the restructuring of the film this project implements, the only way to remove Snoke’s identification of Kylo’s parentage would be to remove the first Snoke scene entirely. We wouldn’t meet him until a smash cut to after the interrogation scene. Even if it weren’t outside the scope of the project, it’d be a little tough to pull off at the same time as the other stuff.
But the nice thing is that this edit will be available to any and all whom would like to take or modify it further. That’s part of why I’d like to A) make it solid and seamless, and B) stick to the original focus.

Fair enough. Looking forward to the finished product

Thanks! If anyone has a 5.1 setup and would like to tackle the audio, I would be most grateful.

I will look into it! I’m interested in using it myself as well so if nobody else does it I will give it a try sooner or later.

Excellent.
After showing the first scene to a few people, I’ve decided to lengthen the final shot by 1 second to allow more time to identify what’s going on.
Also, now BB8’s antenna wobbles as it should. 😃

Cool. If we’re super lucky, the audio from the following scene can have dialogue cleanly removed so I can have seamless music and ambience during the extended bits. I’ll find out when I sit down to work on this next!

The videos don’t show up on Vimeo for me. There’s just a blank page after I enter the password.

JEDIT: The second video now works on Firefox, but the first one only works on Chrome. Very curious.

Anyway, the second scene is perfect now 😃. The first still needs a sound of C-3PO walking away and the BB8 sounds, as you said. I wish there was a way to fix the music so that it didn’t repeat, but it’s mostly seamless already. Nice to see this coming together.

Here are NeverarGreat’s two R2 scenes with proper audio and fully formatted. The only thing missing is a few sound effects for BB8 (head turns and rolling away). Anyone have any isolated FX already I could use?

these look great!
it really fixes the issue of r2 randomly turning on at the end

^ I concur. Keep up the great work everyone!

I don’t think it really fixes this issue, but it looks less problematic that way.

Are you referring to the confusion over how R2 got the map in the first place? Because I agree that this doesn’t attempt to answer that question. This edit only attempts to fix the plot convenience of having R2 wake up at the end of the movie for no apparent reason. The fact that R2 probably has over 80 years of backup data helps explain why it would take him several hours to search it.

Yep I agree, this is exactly what I meant 😃 And with the removal of 3PO awkward line from restructured v1 (“I don’t think R2 has the rest of the map”) it could work better now.

In the new context you need that line to make sense of what’s going on. Otherwise it’s not clear why R2 partially powers up.

Author

^Yes, true. The 3PO line will be in V2, in order to have the new R2 hard drive thing make sense. All in all, I’m happier redeeming and using it than cutting it. 😃

Heh, I didn’t realize it had been cut. Ah well, I’m glad it will work out 😃

Hi, everyone! Ive been a long-time reader of the forums and have now finally decided to join in a little bit.

Anyway, Ive been reading your discussions on both Finns “It’s the First Order, they done it!” dialogue and the waking up of R2 at the end. I have been making my own fan edit where I am working towards the same goals as this edit is (as well as some of my own changes).

I am completely removing Finns previously mentioned line of dialogue and removing the lip flap left over by superimposing different mouth movements over Finn, frame by frame. It looks good and is almost finished as it is missing the running sound as he approaches Han. I see that you are trying to go with changing it to “The First Order, they found us!” but if you wish to have a look, I can upload it later (at work now).

As with the waking of R2, I am trying to give a reason for it by using some C3PO dialogue that was used in Disney’s “Star Tours: The Adventure Continues” attraction. During the ride, C3PO says “A transmission?”, then later “What transmission?”. I used someone’s vacation video on YouTube to grab the dialogue and am in the middle of cleaning it up and removing the sound of the crowd. Using this would result in:

BB8 approaches R2, they beep and boop. Then C3PO appears.
3PO: Ah, my friend, youve come back.
R2: Beep boop
3PO: A transmission? What transmission? (R2 was woken by the recieving of the transmission)
R2: Beep boop
3PO: Master Luke? (Dialogue taken from another movie, probably ROTJ. This implies it was Luke who sent the transmission)
R2: Beep boop
3PO: Hurry, we must go tell the others at once.
And the movie continues…

Im probably less than half way to finishing the R2 scene and not 100% sure if this would work as I um uncertain if R2 can actually recieve transmissions in this way. Anybody know? If any of these edits help in any way, just let me know.

Thanks, and that’s a very interesting idea. In the name of keeping TFA as close to itself as possible while merely implementing low-level restructuring, I think the solution already being worked toward is more appropriate for this project. I’m enjoying the approach of changing as little as possible to have the best overall effect. That said, I’d love to see what you’ve cooked up, especially the Finn line.

My understanding is that he has to be plugged in to receive transmissions, so I’m personally more fond of NeverarGreat’s solution.

If R2 had received a transmission at the end of the movie, I’d expect that would be from Luke detailing the location of the Last Jedi Temple and his route. In other words, R2 would have received the small piece of the map that BB8 has. That would mean that BB8 would have had the larger map, which would have showed the entire galaxy except for the piece that Luke would have still had to travel when he gave the map to Lor San Tekka.

Of course, that would mean that nobody would have been able to assemble a full map until the transmission, making the scramble by the Resistance and the First Order rather silly in retrospect.

You make some very good points that I can’t argue against. I’ll have to abandon my idea and rethink my strategy…

And theres no way that someone really skilled on editing could make this idea a reality? Sounds pretty good to me, so much better than the original McGuffin

I don’t really care if it’s in the shape of a movie, or a cartoon tv-series, or if it’s on videogames and books. Neither if it’s canon or legends; I love all my Star Wars (yes, even the prequels).

“Laugh it up, Fuzz ball.”

Oh wait, no, not all of it, don’t count the Holiday Special on it.

That would be extremely difficult, since there are two scenes where actors are immersed in holograms that would need to be changed. There’s also the bigger problem of just what the First Order is looking for, since it’s implied that they already have the large map from the records of the Empire (which is where R2 originally got the map according to the writers). So the First Order would be searching for a map that they already have, a movie-killing mistake. And in this edit, since the First Order is apparently unconcerned with destroying the Resistance to eliminate BB8, their quest to find Luke would be dropped entirely for a ‘Destroy the Republic’ plan instead.
