Frinks got it right. Fans would have loved Ledger anyway because it was a great performance of a loved character. But the rest of the world (most people) went nuts over it because of his death after portraying such a dark character.
To a degree you’re probably right, but I’m certain it would have been a widely popular performance (and film) regardless. Because it was great. If it wasn’t great, no one would have cared.
