JRR Tolkien's The Hobbit: turning a mediocre trilogy into one really good film (Released)

To be honest, I have no idea how to add them either. Some people have mentioned a process called muxing or remuxing, but that is foreign territory for me. All I know is that my editing software kept crashing every time I tried exporting an ISO with subs attached, and that’s why they aren’t included!

Rogue One: The Battle of Scarif fan edit (Released)
Time

Thanks for all the comments so far…it’s nice to get this feedback and even see a little debate over the changes made 😃

I didn’t intend for this edit to “replace” Rogue One, unlike the intention for my Hobbit edit. The Battle of Scarif is for people who A) just want to get to the action, and/or B) want to see a few classic Star Wars elements inserted into the film (the crawl, John Williams, etc).

For what it’s worth, I did not find myself drawn to any of the characters in Rogue One. K2SO is fun and interesting, but even he just felt like a watered-down version of HK47 from Knights of the Old Republic. So while I do agree that this edit stunts the arcs of all the characters, from a plot perspective we don’t miss that much at all.

Stay tuned for a (more likely than not) 2.0 version of this edit!

I do think I’m going to release a 2.0 version, so to speak. The current version is only in stereo and is also at a lower compression rate. So having a high-quality 5.1 version would be nice for viewers.

I’d also like to try matching Vader’s dubbed lines a bit better, along with some other comments and feedback I’ve received.

To your point ben_danger on making further music changes, especially the sequence with Jyn’s death…I’m not sure there is a suitable Williams track that could fit that. It’s a pretty long piece (starting from the Star Destroyers crashing into the gate up until Vader’s shuttle approaching the Rebel flagship) and has varying tone and emotion to it. And out of all the cues from Rogue One, I think it was probably Giacchino’s best. I dunno, maybe I’ll look at some of the Episode III cues and see if something might work…

Rogue One: The Battle of Scarif fan edit (Released)
Time

It’s May 4, and that means that Rogue One: The Battle of Scarif is now complete!

It’s just under 50 minutes long, making it a nice little companion piece to the original theatrical release. Alternatively, you could watch this right before A New Hope! Again, the main point of this edit is to focus on the epic battle sequence from Rogue One, while also adding elements to make it fit in more with the other Star Wars films. This means, among other things:

  • An opening text crawl, which summarizes the events of Rogue One leading up to the battle of Scarif.
  • Insertion of several music cues from John Williams. About 50-60% of the film’s score is now comprised of classic Star Wars cues.
  • Classic Star Wars sound effects added in certain places, along with a few old-school wipe transitions.
  • Other cuts and adjustments to scenes throughout the battle, either to fit the new music cues or to pace the film a bit differently. For example, there isn’t as much back-and-forth cutting between all the different characters anymore. This may have originally been to make the film seem more exciting, but it also made it difficult to follow the action at times.
  • The film ends exactly as it did in the original version, making it a perfect segue into A New Hope.

If you’re interested in checking it out, let me know 😃

Looks like someone had the same ideas I had. While this is pretty rough, I think it could achieve the merge idea.

The editor seems to have put a lot of work into that! Even so, it’s a pretty rough scene. The music shifts too abruptly, and there’s no sense of pacing with the editing. However, the VFX shots with the blockade runner and Star Destroyer are pretty well done.

Ok, so it sounds great ! Yep you’re right about the kyber/whills dialogues which don’t add anything to your edit (actually they don’t really add anything to the theatrical version either but it was a nice touch).

You begin your edit with the Krennic/Vader scene (which is a very good idea), but are you going to keep some of Krennic/Tarkin and the very classy shot of the dish being placed on the death star as well (I don’t think you will since you mention the destruction of Jedha in your crawl) ? When I watched the movie a second time it occured to me that Krennic should have been the main character of the movie, so your “third act” edit could keep this “Krennic point of view” situation. Last question (sorry 😃), about the Yavin IV material, will you keep the Bail/Mothma scenes (I’m a big fan of Bail/Motham material found in Episode III fanedits) and cut the C3PO/R2 caméo ?

(edit: well, you plan on releasing your edit in 3 days so I guess I’ll know in a very not so far future what’s in your edit 😄)

The Krennic/Tarkin stuff is going away, as are the Death Star construction shots. Cool stuff, but in the timeline of this edit, these events have already occurred. Bail and Mon Mothma are definitely still in the film 😃

It’ll be interesting to see how it turns out. I think this approach lends towards those who want to merge the films. Seeing your other work, I’d not be surprised if we see a mapleized merged edit by some other editors.

I’ve honestly thought about doing that merged edit of Rogue One and A New Hope, but there would be a couple issues.

  1. Going from brand new Rogue One made in 2017 to A New Hope from 1977 would be glaringly obvious visually.

  2. There isn’t any footage to link the Tantive IV escaping via hyperspace above Scarif, to then being captured by Vader’s Star Destroyer above Tatooine. I suppose you could splice in the deleted scenes of Luke and Biggs in Anchorhead, but the footage is poor quality.

It might be worth a shot however!

By the way are you going to address the issue that a weakness is known by Jyn to have been implemented by her father ? It’s totally inconsistent with ANH so I was wondering if you were going to remove it. And since the main focus of your edit is the battle of Scarif are you going to use a flash back structure to keep at least the dialogue between Donnie Yen character and Jyn about the kyber crystals and the Whills ? (could be cool to find a way to somehow keep that small interesting part)

No, I’m actually removing any mention of Galen in this edit. He’s already dead by the time this film starts, so I found it odd for the characters to reference someone we haven’t seen on screen. No flashbacks with Chirrut either- talking about Kyber crystals is interesting but doesn’t add anything to this edit. I’m trying to keep it completely focused on actually stealing the plans and the ensuing battle.

Sorry, that might have been a bit harsh, didn’t mean it to be. I do agree with Jeebus, the sound design is fantastic.

Ha, no problem. It’s a subjective thing with music anyways. I just feel that Giacchino’s score was a little too generic for a Star Wars film. Perhaps if he had more time to write it, we could have got some more memorable cues.

If you are planning to abstract ROGUE ONE in a similar way, would you ever consider doing the same with any other Star Wars films?

To be honest, I haven’t given too much thought to editing the other Star Wars films. I know a lot of fan edits of them exist already and I wouldn’t want to do something that’s already been done. What did you have in mind?

Rogue One: The Battle of Scarif fan edit (Released)

Hi everyone! I’m the editor of the Maple Films version of the Hobbit (JRR Tolkien’s The Hobbit). For my second fanedit, I’ve decided to make a version of Rogue One that revolves entirely around the Battle of Scarif. This was the most exciting sequence in the film by far, and I feel would make for an exciting 40-minute (or so) film.

In order to make The Battle of Scarif stand on its own (meaning you wouldn’t NEED to see all of Rogue One to understand what happens in this cut), I’m planning to make the following edits and adjustments:

  • Insertion of an opening crawl (isn’t everyone doing this??). It will summarize the events that occur during the course of Rogue One that lead to the Scarif battle.
  • First scene of the film is the confrontation between Krennic and Darth Vader, with some adjusted dialogue for Vader.
  • The Rebels will still bicker over going to war, but this stuff will be trimmed. As will Cassian’s super long monologue about the Rebellion. Booorrrring.
  • I never found myself that invested in Rogue One’s characters to begin with, so most “character” scenes and lines will be adjusted. The main focus of the edit will be the battle itself and the recovery of the Death Star plans.
  • Insertion of classic Star Wars music cues from John Williams. I’ve been going through the entire saga OST and will be dropping tracks where appropriate. Most people have agreed that Giacchino’s score just didn’t cut it. Not that I totally blame him; apparently he had 3-4 weeks to write and conduct everything.
  • Various SFX enhancements.
  • Other edits that I can’t think of right now, since I don’t have a copy of the film yet!

As with my Hobbit fanedit, The Battle of Scarif will be edited from the Blurays using 5.1 surround sound, and will be released in the best quality possible. Any tips or suggestions on where to find a good, complete Star Wars SFX library would be appreciated!

I greatly enjoyed watching the Blu Ray of your edit and applaud what you have done. I have only 2 minor complaints though:

  1. The transition from AUJ to DOS feels a little rushed but as a positive the transition from DOS to BOTFA is ABSOLUTELY SEAMLESS!
  2. We don’t know why Gandalf didn’t follow them out of Rivendell.

Besides these 2 minor issues I have with the edit, I must say…this edit is truly incredible. It now takes its rightful place as the prequel to the LOTR Trilogy in our family’s marathons from this year onward. Thank you!!!

Thanks so much! Glad you took the time to download the Bluray…I put a lot of work into that haha. I can address the two points you’ve made.

  1. The AUJ to DOS transition was smoother in my first cut of the edit, because I removed the eagle sequence. Originally I had the party start running from the orcs/wargs, and cut immediately to them running towards Beorn’s house in DOS. However, many people complained about losing the eagles so I re-inserted them for the final cut. That however meant that I had to figure out a way to get the company off those eagles and into Beorn’s house…no easy task since at the end of AUJ they’re dropped off on top of the Carrock and we never see them get down. So I did the best I could with what I had to work with.
  2. As for Gandalf remaining in Rivendell, I didn’t want to show Galadriel or the White Council at all in the edit, so that meant I couldn’t really show why he stays behind. His comings and goings in the book aren’t really elaborated upon, so you could argue that fits with his actions in this edit!

Thanks again for the feedback 😄

Sorry, I’ve been taking a break from keeping up on fan edit stuff the past few months and just got back on here. Thanks to those of you who have watched J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and given some nice feedback! I’ve tried to make the edit feel as close to an actual studio release as possible, so it means a lot to hear some of you say that it is your “go-to” version of the Hobbit from here on out.

After a good deal of waiting, I’ve finally managed to have the film accepted into the Internet Fan Edit Database. Here is a link to the listing on Fanedit.org!

Probably not going to happen. The 10GB digital file was a 2-pass encode and the bitrate holds up very well, even on a larger screen. If you want absolute top-shelf quality, the Bluray ISO is the way to go. I don’t want to have so many versions of the fan edit floating around that it gets confusing for people!
