Episode VII: The Force Awakens - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD *
Time

I'm not disappointed in the traditional sense. It could have been better, but I think anyone expecting to see anything close to the level of the OT was just fooling themselves.

I thought it was exciting, and there's almost no way it could be as bad as the prequels.

I won't be able to say more until we see more, but for now, I'm cautiously optimistic. It's a teaser trailer, and boy were we teased.

Oh I just heard from my best friend and he said that completely by chance his dad got these exact same cables this week and just like in my case they set his hard drive on fire,so avoid these things people!

What i want to know is what are the odds that we would both get the same cables the same week and have the same problem? This is getting X files level strange now people.

As I much as I enjoy the X files, that's a huge problem I have with it... Mulder treats every mundane coincidence as if there were a conspiracy involved. Granted, in universe, there is, but it seems to have made some people in real life feel justified jumping to the same conclusions.

That being said, that is a pretty odd coincidence that you both got the same cables by chance. These kinds of odds freak me out sometimes, like I was walking down the street today and passed a car with the license plate XGF 3A2. I mean, what are the chances that of all the license plate numbers I could have seen it was that one?! ;)

P.S. Thanks for the advice, I hate hard drive fires

4K restoration on Star Wars

4:3 DVDs from D1 masters were common in the '90s and early '00s, and they looked about the same as the GOUT.

You are aware that the GOUT only came packaged with the 2004SE in 16:9 aren't you? Does that not strike you as odd?

Actually there was a release with the 04 in 4:3 FS and the OUT in non-anamporphic WS. They're the ones I have, I got them from someone who didn't know the difference between full and wide screen...

It isn't the DVD's fault if people display it on the wrong type of TV. 4:3 DVDs are designed for 4:3 TVs, obviously. Pixel aspect ratio has nothing whatsoever to do with video quality, just as much of what you've typed has nothing to do with any of my posts.

OK... but weren't the widescreen discs for the '04 SE anamorphic? There is literally no reason to have made the GOUT non-anamporphic other than to insult the fans who asked for it.

Anyone else who spends any amount of time on TFN may recognize this as the infamous "you're getting what you deserve" mantra.

I think it's now obvious that George Lucas isn't just a member here, he's actually posting in this thread.

I would be very nonplussed if it came to light there was at least one LFL plant on these forums.

Darn it!

I recorded Agents of Shield last night on my computer(Because I don't have highspeed I have to use my computer since all DVRs require a highspeed internet connection these days.)because it is my little brother and sister's favorite show on TV right now but it comes on too late for them on a school night(Why can't they ever put the type of shows kids and teens like on Frriday,Saturday,or Sunday?)and the wait for the new season after last season's final has been killing them. Any way like an idiot I hit the wrong buttons and deleted the video file from my hard drive so now they can't watch it! i feel so stupid.

If anyone out there knows of a good free program that would give me a chance to recover the file or a way to find it on my computer without a program would you please tell me. I have been using Google but so far all the programs I have found cost money that I don't have at the moment.

Sorry I know this thread is for bitching but I would really like some help with this, thank you.

Did you look in your Trash/Recycle Bin?

You know, for some reason I really hate John Kerry. He can go fuck himself.

You hate John Kerry because he can fuck himself?

No it's because I think he is a terrible secretary of state.

Meh. He's about average. There have been many far worse. I can't stand to look at him after he got (another) new face. He looks too smooth and solid for 70.

Scenes of real aircraft are common as dirt throughout movie and TV history. How long before they make a habit of using CGI cars for car chases?

That nightmare has already come to pass (somewhat).

...I... how did this happen? Did they only render a preview? WHAT THE HELL IS HAPPENING?!?

*clears away cobwebs*

Well, I guess the thread isn't getting any younger... I don't wanna be that guy who dominates his own topic, but you've given me no choice!

SW:

-CGI AT-ATs and chicken walkers added to sandtrooper search in dune sea

-All scenes with stormtroopers are fleshed out with additional CGI troops

-A Jedi is added to the blockade runner, who is killed by stormtroopers.

Empire:

-Lucas loved this idea of the flying manta rays, and finally used it in both AOTC and ROTS,so why not shove 'em in cloud city now?

-More than one probe droid searches Hoth, so it doesn't look like the Empire only sent out one. (CGI Dewback reasoning)

- Tentacles/horns, etc. added to space slug

Jedi:

-New scene where Yoda tells Luke about the "Chosen One" prophecy.

-Lucas didn't think everyone blinked enough, so he gave people CGI eyelids if they went a while without blinking.

-Speeder bike scene made "faster and more intense" by inserting new CGI footage of them doing many of the stunts and tricks from the TPM podrace. "It's like poetry, they rhyme."

You guys talk about respect as if it's something that only you understand. Like if I or someone else indulges in an occasional obscenity we don't know the meaning of respect.

^This. While I'm willing to entertain the idea that he shouldn't have posted in the "safety-scissors" forum, I can't comprehend the belittling of his good news in the good news thread. (I can think of some dirtier "Good News" quotes...) It's fair game, one of the very first sections of the bitching thread was about how someone's grandfather was about to die, he died, everyone consoled him, and moved on to the next bitching. What's the period of back-slapping necessary before other people can post their OWN good news?

ok, so how should we make thread that:

1. makes it clear dirty talk is not wanted here

and

2. doesn't beg the hotrod types to talk dirty

?

I really didn't want to get into this, and I don't care if talk gets dirty or not, but it may be wise if you really really really want to avoid dirty talk to find a child board or a moderated board somewhere instead of the un-moderated off-topic section of a SW board...

I have decided to alter the rules and allow all in the UK to vote in this poll, otherwise I don't think there'd be many votes cast here.

Not good enough! I demand that you extend this vote to all people in the Commonwealth!

*sigh* Why should people in Canada be able to vote in this poll?

Why would people in the non-Scot UK? They really shouldn't have all that much more of a say in it than anyone else over the Scot's decision whether or not to rule themselves.

Fantasia (1940) - Backstory: I haven't seen it since I was 7. I recall seeing it once or twice but never feeling the desire to watch it again. When I was very young, I found it to be incredibly boring and long. Watching it again many years later has been a thoroughly entertaining experience.

Content: The film is split into eight segments, each with a self contained theme or storyline. I've gotta be honest, even as an adult watching only with my partner with no children present, I can recall smiling or even laughing at each segment.

Production: The entire picture is outstandingly animated with gorgeous colors and imaginative characterizations of fictional creatures and inanimate objects. The soundtrack, lovingly selected by a committee including master of ceremonies Deems Taylor, conductor Leopold Stokowski, and Walt Disney himself, shines at every moment, with compositions from throughout time and around the world.

Controversy: Among Disney's animated films, this one may be the most over-looked in terms of controversy. Everyone loves to talk and exaggerate about the sexy hints dropped in Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and the Little Mermaid and the racist stereotypes held in Peter Pan and Dumbo. But Fantasia's main controversy adds up to about 20 seconds of censored images containing a half-donkey (rather than half horse) Black centaurette. The figure, named Sunflower, is a caricature featuring many contemporary stereotypes of Black people, including bad teeth, large lips, a monkey-like facial structure, and a subservient attitude. There are very low-quality bootlegs of these scenes on YouTube if you wanted to see them, for now. I am against censorship in almost every occasion, including this one. I own a collection of the earliest Mickey Mouse cartoons on DVD, and before several of the shorts, film expert Leonard Maltin gives an introduction putting into context some of Mickey's behavior, including smoking and drinking heavily, being very disrespectful to Minnie, and two or three blackface gags. Now I ask, how hard would it have been to have a critic or expert give a little explanation before the film played, and leave history alone? Another minor controversy concerns the overdubbing of Deems Taylor's original narration by a voice double, due to many of Taylor's original soundtracks being lost. I am not as concerned by this for two reasons: a) It's a pretty faithful imitation and b) there aren't many other options, it's along the same lines as many older films are treated for Criterion release: The Gold Rush's original soundtrack was re-recorded, frames were patched from multiple different sources, etc. In the end, I would love to see the original Taylor narration restored and found. If it's lost I'll be disappointed, however, I understand many films are truly lost and I'm glad this hasn't happened to Fantasia.

Conclusion: I don't consider many films to be perfect (Star Wars, Raiders of the Lost Ark, the Breakfast Club, and Duck Soup are among my all time favorites) but I must admit I'm pretty sure I've got another to add to that roster. This is film is the best representation of movies as art I can imagine, and is just as outstandingly brilliant now as it must have been on its original release. It's perfect regardless of the controversy surrounding it. This is truly a masterpiece.
