STAR WARS: EP IV 2004 REVISITED ADYWAN *1080p HD VERSION NOW IN PRODUCTION
Time

Your merging of the 2011 + 2020 shots to maximize detail is gorgeous (and next-level) work! I so appreciate the effort and time you’re pouring into this edit.

Apologies if this has been discussed before and I missed it, but I was curious about the intention behind two changes from the original version of ANH:R I noticed in your January comparison shots: the pink X-Wing engine glows (which you made redder before) and Vader’s red lenses (which were blacker last time). What inspired the different approach this time?

( SPOILERS )

Not sure if this was serious, but as someone checking the forum while still downloading the edit, this was unexpected and a little dismaying (not the fact that Adywan might have made the change you mentioned, but that you mentioned it like this without even 12 hours passing for people to watch the movie for themselves). Hoping it was a joke, and that something major was not ruined before my first viewing.

Thanks to everyone else who has posted their responses in a more community-friendly way – this day has been a long time coming for many of us, and it’s so much fun to see the enthusiasm and congratulations pouring in. I’m realizing I may need to stay away from the thread until I finish downloading and watching the movie, so that I can avoid being spoiled and people can discuss in as much detail as they want.

In the meantime, thank you again Adywan for all your hard work over the years!

Called Melodyne.

I've seen Melodyne's software do some near-magical things, but it isn't cheap. They do have a free trial, however, which may be useful for such a specific (and potentially short) task.

According to the Revisited Facebook page, there are two DH-17 blaster props and a camcorder used for ESB:R up for auction. They're being sold to raise money for a new camera to film scenes for ROTJ:R.

Camera Auction | Blaster 1 | Blaster 2

Looks like things are continuing to move behind the scenes. :-)

Just wanted to mention that a little while back I put up a version of ANH:R on the spleen that combines the higher resolution PAL video (slowed to 23.976 fps) with the higher quality NTSC audio. As good as it gets until ANH:R:HD comes out.

Cool, good to know! Thanks for doing that, and letting us know!

Hi Jason! Thanks for making the interview happen -- it was great to have a nice long, current, in-depth conversation about the epic that Revisited has become.

It made me want to do something similar with Ady to talk about the details of his editing/compositing techniques, for all the editors/artists out there. Maybe some day, if he's up for it!

I wish you had asked a very important question, though: is it ADD-ee-wan or AID-ee-wan?

Donation drive for a house addition, problem solved.

Awhile back there was a drive encouraging everyone that "liked" the page to give one unit of currency.

If that happened now then Ady would net over 60,000 units of currency! Certainly enough to pay for an addition to the house.

Unless that currency is yen!

I think there is a difference between errors and goofs.

One of the many strengths of the Revisited project is Ady's unbelievably keen eye for spotting errors (inconsistencies, sloppy visual effects, etc.), and finding creative and invisible ways of fixing them. Making the film internally consistent and visually pristine are ways in which the films have benefitted from Ady's thoughtful and comprehensive editing approach.

One of the reasons we are all so passionate about this project is because we are huge Star Wars fans. Many of us have grown up (and old!) with the films, and our connections to them are deep -- but also unique. For many fans, noticing goofs like the stormtrooper bumping his head in ANH has been part of the Star Wars experience -- a reward for watching closely, and a fun bit of trivia to discuss and share. Goofs like this are not visual effects errors in the way that Luke's lightsaber turning green in ANH is, or consistency errors like the number of blaster rifles on a rack changing is.

I'm not saying things like this should absolutely not be changed (for example, I thought fixing the instrument that C-3P0 bumps his head against when getting into the Falcon in Cloud City so it didn't wobble was a good change, but mainly because that seemed more like an error (in-universe, the Falcon doesn't have glued-on instruments), so it was in the spirit of internal consistency to fix it), but I do think we should be thoughtful about which things we suggest fixing. I know for many of us, the Revisited edition will be our primary version of the films, and we don't want to sterilize the film to the point where there aren't bits of fun historical trivia to enjoy anymore.

What's blowing my mind (and I'm surprised no one else has mentioned it so far) is that in the newest set of expanded cockpit shots Ady posted, it's not just the cockpit walls that have been expanded -- we're even seeing more of the characters! There are two shots, for example, where we actually see more of Han's body than in the cropped version.

Not only will this be cool to watch, but it would also appear to mean that Ady isn't extending our view of an inanimate background (by stitching still images together and motion tracking the extra pieces in the shots), which is what I had originally thought he might have been doing -- but actually using (and restoring, since it sounded pretty beat up) the HD film scan, including the actors' performances. I wonder if there are other hidden gems that have been restored from this asset, as well!

If his process with ANH:R is any guide, in addition to his computer displays, Ady also tests the project on his (and others') home theater systems, to make sure picture and sound quality is consistent across setups. He's meticulous about ensuring the finished quality of his projects holds up in the "real world" outside of his computer -- which is very much appreciated.

Thanks for the progress report, Ady! The canyon looks beautiful, and I'm excited for you to be able to finally clear your dining room for the holidays!

Thanks as always for your hard work on this project, and I'm glad you're planning to take a breather before starting up again in January. Good luck with the filming!

Great news re: the carbonite model! Glad he came through in the end.

Will Ady need to add the fixed shirt on top of the existing piece? Or will he be making a whole new cast based off of this model? I'm curious how this cast (which has the incorrect shirt, since it's an original) will be used.
