Hi focuspuller, I'm so excited about this release and very grateful for the amount of work you're putting in. Love the new samples by the way.

Like others I was very disappointed in the recent 3 disc release. I'd had high hopes that it would be done right, but to just release the 1994 soundtrack (with the dialogue) as disc one was a disgrace.

This film will be full on fullscreen - no switch back and forth / widescreen to full - sound will be the original dolby sound ( not the Thau version)

Project is getting looking good -

If there is anyone out there with better copies ( so you think) please send them) we want the best to move forward on this project.

An interesting point is that the extended cut of STM was broadcast from a 16mm print where's the extended cut of SII was produced from a 35mm and 16mm print (for the extended scenes). That’s why the extra footage stands out more in the SII extended cut, where's the KCOP Cut of STM is more consistent.

I really believe that the an old 4:3 VHS tape of STM needs to be used for consistency sake. That was the stance taken by the team who put SII RIC together, which proved a wise decision.

Mitch you're absolutely right that the biggest challenge is making the extra footage stand out as little as possible. The main factor that will make this difficult is that the extended cut of STM was made from a 16mm source. I'm assuming you'll need a 4:3 VHS copy of the theatrical cut to fill in footage lost through commercial breaks and station ID's, such footage will be quite noticeable as it will be from a 35mm source.

GOOD LUCK, I wish you well with this, a lot of Superman fans have been chasing this for some time.

Just have a question regarding this fan preservation project.

From what I understand it was mostly constructed from PAL recordings however it was then released in both PAL and NTSC formats. I’ve never seen a listing for it anywhere in the PAL format, but I’m guessing it must be out there somewhere.

When RIC was assembled would it be likely that the footage was converted to NTSC before restoration, or would conversions have been made afterwards?

If the later is the case then would the PAL version be of better picture quality?

Personally I prefer PAL, as it’s what I’m used to, but it would be interesting to know how the usage of PAL footage was tackled given this project was mainly going to please those running NTSC.

Well I watched ADM's Redeemed on the weekend and here's my review;

Firstly my I say to all aspiring fan editors out there, you must check this edit out. There's a lot that can be learnt from it. I must admit I was expecting more of a highlights package but what ADM's put together works remarkably well.

I think this edit does better things for Superman III than it does for part IV. Redeemed shows you that some really good material and performance were shot for SIII, only to be degraded by the silliness going on around them. Whilst Superman IV isn't exactly rushed through here, the editing just doesn't seem as slick as the handling of SIII material. This is most notably due to the audio.

Take the UN scene. Obviously ADM wanted to get rid of Lacy and her father, so the scene where Lacy says "What's he going to say", to which Lois replies "Something Wonderful" is cut. This triggers an abrupt cut in the audio that highlights the edit. Perhaps the audio could've been aloud to play out over a shot of the UN audience. You'd still hear the dialog though at least not see the faces.

Getting the audio right is extremely important as you don't want to draw attention to where a cut is made.

One thing that bothered me was using the SII deleted scene for Lex’s getaway. It just seems it was used purely for the sake of utilising the footage. It doesn’t really improve the film and just creates a few small holes.

Here we have Eve bust Lex out, only for her to disappear, then when we get to Lex at the museum we have Lenny tagging along. This character hasn't even been introduced, he just appears out of nowhere. Also when Superman drops Lex back into the hands of the authorities we have fellow prisoners whistling Mozart, which is now rendered insignificant.

Just one more thought, perhaps the scene of evil Superman smashing into the oil-tanker could’ve been used, just to make him a little more menacing.

In any case a marvellous effort ADM I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Hey everyone, just a little video help question for anyone who can assist.

Currently I'm working on a Superman II Donner fan edit. After backing up my PAL copy of S2 TRDC on my hard drive I converted the VOB files to an "interlaced mpeg2 movie file" using TMPGEnc. I selected "top field first", even though the source type is "progressive", (which I always understood to not require a field order placing).

I’ve been editing it over the last week in Ulead Video Studio. I’m breaking it up into sections so not to be too taxing on my computer. However when I export my edit the picture at times gets a little scrambled, resulting in tiny pauses. Mostly evident in fast motion scenes. It's difficult to explain without knowing the correct terminology, but the pixels just appear shifted at times.

I found this problem to be easily corrected by changing the field order in the project settings to "frame based" or "lower field first".

This has confused me due to the following:

- Firstly the file was encoded as "top field first", so how could rearranging it during the editing stage help?
- Secondly I thought computers tend to not show incorrect field order placing, that this can only be seen on a TV monitor.
- Finally, in the past when I’ve encoded files with the incorrect field order, the resulting effect has been jumpy picture, not this scrambled picture.

Any information with regards to this would be much appreciated.

WOW! I'd love to see this release FanFiltration.

It's a terrible shame that WB choose not to release an extensive archive of deleted scenes with the new Superman sets. Pretty much a complete joke that Warners release STM as a 4-disc set and fill up the empty space with George Reeves and the Fleischer cartoons. There really are some terrific deleted scenes out there which should at least be preserved.

I truly hope your cut sees the light of day.

That’s some nice work FanFiltration, can't wait to see more.

No doubt the best cut exists utilising a mix of Donner/Lester footage.

Personally I don't enjoy Lester’s version very much. I did make a fan edit from the RIC of S2, and was just enthralled by how great a movie Superman 2 can be once you take out the Lester comedy and add some Donner magic.

I haven’t seen the Donner cut yet, I’m patiently waiting for December 6th the Australian release date for this highly anticipated release.

You might be right there, but fingers crossed this technical error is fixed.

That said I've heard the Japanese laserdisc for Superman the Movie has superior sound quality to the US release. So possibly someone with this version could capture the audio and place it over the new theatrical DVD.
