Is the Hobbit prequel trilogy suffering the same problems as the Star Wars prequel Trilogy?
Time

I would go so far as to say that The Desolation Of Smaug was far more of a travesty to the LOTR trilogy and Tolkien then the prequels were to the OT. Disgusting. The first I thought was okay.

The frame rate is the best part, and the main reason I went to see it. I'm quite the HFR proponent, and I hope they go further (60fps).

team negative1 - star wars 1977 - 35mm theatrical version (Released)
Time

I haven't posted anything on this forum in literally forever, but I just felt like dropping by and saying how excited I am for this project. Everytime I see a new screenshot I feel like I'm finally looking at the true version of the trilogy, given a proper and caring restoration at long last. Even without colour correction, these shots are simply stunning. Thank you so much Team -1 for all your hard work and dedication in preserving these classics.

Do you think Disney will release the unaltered versions for DVD and blue ray?
Time

I think they will at some point, but like others, I fear we'll get another GOUT. Disney's BD remasters of their animated canon are absolutely gorgeous, but they have the original masters to work with. If they treat Star Wars with the same care as their Diamond Editions (with the exception of changes ie. The Lion King) I will be more than happy.

I like George Lucas
Time

I love and respect George Lucas for creating Star Wars, for his tenacity, for his revolutionary work in film. He's got a vivid and fascinating imagination, and while in more recent years he's gone overboard with his ideas, he's done brilliant work in the past, and I can't help but admire him.

Of course, I don't respect his revisionism, or many of the choices he made with the prequels, but nobody's perfect, eh?

Disney Acquires LucasFilm for $4.05 billion, Episode 7 in 2015, 8 and 9 to Follow, New Film Every 2-3 Years
Time

I'll give my thought on all of this.

When I first read the news, I stared open-mouthed at the screen for about a minute as I read. While I've learned not to take what George Lucas says to heart, I honestly believed that there would never be another live-action film, at least during Lucas's lifetime.

Once my shock subsided enough, I began to think about what this sequel trilogy would be like. I'll admit it, I'm optimistic. Disney owning it doesn't bother me, (I won't be surprised if they end up owning everything one day), since many other Disney-owned projects have turned out great (Tron: Legacy, Pirates of the Caribbean, Pixar, etc. And since the major downfall of the PT was Lucas's poor directing and creative choices, there's a possibility of the new films being the films we wanted with the prequels but never got. There's also the possibility that they could end up being worse, but I truly think it's a bad idea to make assumptions about something before we have any details about it.

As other people have mentioned, there's the possibility that we could get the OOT in good quality. Disney wants to make money, as much as they can, and I'm sure they know there's a demand for the originals to be properly remastered. Lucas refuses to release them because he doesn't consider them the true versions, not because of any money issues. Disney could care less.

I'm keeping an open mind. If this is a Godsend, that's great. If not, oh well, it's not the end of the world.

I just wanna say, it's been a while since I've been on the forums, but I remember looking forward to your project with great anticipation. And judging from all of the screenshots and the video samples you've shown us so far, this may just end up becoming my go-to version of ANH. I cannot wait for the release. Keep up the good work, my man!

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)
Time

This reminds me of one of the most rage-inducing moments in my life.

A friend and I were talking about the 3D release of TPM and another friend came into the conversation and said something along the lines of 'Star Wars sucks, why would you want to see that, etc' and of course, both of us being Star Wars fans, we were upset and questioned why he thought they sucked, and his response was 'The special effects are so BAD!' I was confused at first, but my friend deduced that he was talking about the special effects in the OT. He told him that this was the prequels, and the effect were CGI, and he said 'Oh. In that case, I might go see it.'

I'm sure I don't need to explain why that upset me, but I firmly believe (and afterwards, my friend I was talking to initially agreed with me as well) that the models and puppetry in the OT look far, far more realistic than any of the CGI in the prequels. And honestly, I don't consider that an opinion, but a fact. I think the only reason he thought CGI looks more real is because he's been brainwashed by today's media and society to believe that CGI=good special effects and puppets and costumes=bad, without actually taking the time to look and think.

And, of course, the added rage of judging the films by their ''bad'' SFX instead of their story, characters, etc.

The Clone Wars: Season V
Time

I'll just chime in quickly with my two cents.

I'm a fan of The Clone Wars, and I'm very, very excited for Season 5, which looks to be the best yet.

I completely understand the anti-Clone Wars arguments here, but they don't bother me too much, because the way at look at The Clone Wars, and most of Star Wars, is this: It's a fun space fantasy franchise. It's full of action and cool-looking shit, and while it's not always plausible, or particularly serious, that's fine, because it's pure escapist entertainment, and it's supposed to be. The OT was the same thing. Sure, there were deeper messages, and they were very well-made films that certainly deserve the praise and recognition they get, and even if the prequels don't match them in quality, they do the same job in serving as fun popcorn flicks. There's plenty of cool nerd porn in them to keep fans talking to this day, and (although many here will disagree with me) I think there were some really high-quality aspects to them.

Even back in the '70s Lucas said that Star Wars was supposed to be a fun film, an entertaining film. There were sword fights, shootouts, dogfights, a wise wizard teaching a young man how to become a hero, a damsel in distress-all staples of entertainment of the past, updated to a space setting. I think fans are put a lot of meaning into the OT that wasn't necessarily part of it to begin with, although that doesn't make their interpretations less valid.

What The Clone Wars does is to provide fun, action-packed entertainment, with plenty of nerd porn for Star Wars fans. You don't have to like The Clone Wars, or the prequels, or any of the EU. It's just entertainment. And personally I think The Clone Wars is very high quality.

I eagerly await geeking out over Sidious dueling Maul and Savage with two lightsabres.

That original trilogy change you wouldn't mind
Time

As long as the original versions were preserved as well:

-Re-rotoscope all of the blaster bolts

-Fix shots of Luke igniting and de-igniting his lightsabre to remove the jump cuts and so the blade 'grows' and 'shrinks' like it should

-Remove all garbage mattes (there are still some visible ones in the BDs)

-Restore the Anchorhead scenes to ANH

-Restore the scene of Vader telepathically contacting Luke while he builds his lightsabre to ROTJ

To prove a point. Please give me as many reasons and character comparisons as to why Star Wars is better than Star Trek.
Time

If we're talking about the OT vs TOS, it's difficult to compare because of how different they are, as everyone has been saying. Star Wars had better special effects obviously, and better music. Overall the acting was better as well. TOS was more serious and realistic though. Star Trek was also 'deeper' in my opinion, with more philosophical and psychological elements, though Star Wars had those too, just more subtle. Both had great characterization, but with the exception of Spock, I'd say Star Wars has just a slight edge in that department.

With the franchises as a whole, I think Star Trek is consistently better written, better acted, smarter, and more believable. But in the end, I agree that it's completely pointless to argue about it.

I'm somewhat surprised by the negative views of the Star Trek 'reboot'. I loved it.
