ORIGINAL STAR WARS TRILOGY OUT 09/2006 BY LUCASFILM
Time
Apologies to TheBizzle, I tend to forget how dangerous absolute values like "only" can be. It wasn't my intent to piss on the valuable work of other people (particularly someone like Jim Ward who is involved in a professional capacity) working to preserve the original trilogy, all I intended was to let people like OCPMovie and Zion and Laserman and MeBeJedi and Moth3r and ADigitalMan and Rikter know how important I think their accomplishments are. They're my heroes.

George Lucas shoved his thumb in my eye and now wants $15.99 for doing it

You've got to be kidding me
They're selling us...OUR joke. The one we made because of how steadfast and downright STUBBORN he was being about this ridiculous change that subverted the original intent of the scene. Now in honor of caving in to demand and giving us what we always wanted they're making a t-shirt emblazoned with a phrase that was created to signify our frustration? This is history-revisionist bullshit. I implore everyone to NOT buy this shirt. Don't let him profit off of OUR reaction to HIS mistake.

ORIGINAL STAR WARS TRILOGY OUT 09/2006 BY LUCASFILM

It makes me really sad to read that OCPMovie could feel that all the work he put into preserving these movies amounted to nothing since they're now being officially released. Something that I think is worth pointing out is that preservationists like you were the fire under the butt of George Lucas.

Every person here who was donating their free time to making the best version of these movies from such limited resources are the ONLY reason that Lucasfilm is officially releasing this movie.

If all that people did on this forum was bitch and complain about how they couldn't get the original versions of the movies they fell in love with on DVD and didn't do anything about it Lucasfilm wouldn't have done a god damn thing. What really made them realize how much potential money they were losing was seeing how willing people were to bring these lost versions to fruition themselves, and even crazier GIVING AWAY said product of their blood, sweat and tears. All of you who took the initiative and upon hearing Lucas say "I will never release that version of the trilogy on DVD" picked yourselves up by your bootstraps and slogged through the tedious work of making it happen showed him how seriously we wanted to see these.

I know that there's no way to qualify this statement but I think what really made Lucas realize how much we wanted this was finding out what the X0Project was accomplishing. I think at the very least (via one of his underlings) Lucas was to some degree aware of what a fine product these tenacious people were squeezing out of such a limited source. To use an analogy, we were all trapped in a pit and while the majority of us (myself included) gave up and whined about what a shitty predicament it was, a precious few of you set about figuring a way out using the best resources at your disposal. Now it seems that just when your dilligent work was about to get us out of the hole the person who put us there in the first place has let a ladder down. To anyone outside of that hole your efforts could seem futile and primitive, but to the people trapped in that hole with you you were our saviors, our heroes, our "only hope."

When I pop in this DVD I'm not going to thank George Lucas, I'm going to thank all of you for making an out-of-touch billionaire realize how wrong he had been. All of you willfully donated your talents, your energy, and especially your time into helping this community relive these cherised moments in our lives. I thank all of you from the very bottom of my heart and salute your accomplishments.

Dr. M's Reinventing The Wheel Edition (PAL to NTSC+) (Released)

I would be more than willing to help seed this on Myspleen, I was also involved in helping Rikter seed the Cowclops V.2 releases if that gives me any sort of "cred". I could also help with a Pay It Forward type system since I do have a DVD-R and a good amount of blank media. Either way I'll continue to follow this thread, very interested in seeing how it turned out!

The Cowclops Transfers (a.k.a. the PCM audio DVD's, Row47 set) Info and Feedback Thread (Released)
Time
I do recognize and appreciate Cowclops's desire to capture the LD as close to the original image as possible and seeing as how I have a cheap TV and quite a bit of time on my hands I have no problem adjusting the picture level for this particular disc. Actually a solution some of you might want to try to give this DVD a fair shake is write down all of the numbers for your picture settings, re-calibrate it for these DVD's and then when you want to watch normal DVDs just put 'em back in. Yeah, kinda obvious advice ("remember to breath when you need oxygen!") but I'm crap with remembering numbers so it helped me out and now I know I can easily go back to my calibrated settings for movies not captured from a laserdisc.

Now here's a question that I don't believe has been asked about these sets: Yes I recognize that laserdisc black is not DVD black and I understand why you would capture it "as is" so as not to lose detail, but are laserdisc COLOR levels any different? What I mean is aside from adjusting the brightness and contrast to get the two black bars to match should I also be fiddling around with the color settings? And can ANYONE give me an opinion on sharpness? I read a home theater guide that said you should turn sharpness all the way down because any setting above 0 is artificial sharpening (i.e. "edge enhancement") but I've never read said advice anywhere else and I'm wondering if that guy was just wrong.

Also something I noticed that I think might be an inherent problem with the laserdisc itself is that the very first scene (title/crawl/pan down to Star Destroyer) has a different black level than the rest of the movie, and I can't remember which but there were a couple other scenes where my very carefully blackened bars would suddenly appear grey again. Oh, and I did notice color noise in some blacks (particularly star fields), is that a result of capturing from LD as well? Lastly I noticed in areas that were comprised of one solid color that there would be some "guessing", I wish I knew the right term for this but basically it wouldn't look like a solid color but in stead a kind of sun bloom of different shades of that color very quickly moving around.

Sorry for the LOOONG post but I just wanted to say in a nutshell that I really dig this transfer. I don't have a 16x9 television so I can't appreciate the anamorphic aspect but once I played around with the picture settings I had it looking very nice on my 35", definitely the Star Wars I love. Also my little brother watched it on his 19" and I noticed that the smaller the TV you put it on and the further away you get from it the better it looks, I know that's true of ANY image but with this DVD in particular I was really hit by it, from a good distance where I couldn't notice all the noise and other ugly little bits of laserdisc problems it looked just like a professionally made DVD.

Hahaha, of COURSE I'm out driving my Dad to the airport when the seeding starts! Anyway I'm copying ESB to the hard drive right now and once that's finished I'll start up that torrent. Btw no need to apologize regarding the discs, I'm not one to complain about something given to me for free from someone who has been so amazingly generous with the OT community. I should've just assumed to move on to ESB but I was working from info obtain from an earlier post that said you were doing ANH on Monday, ESB on Wednesday and ROTJ on Friday. So of course I got all freaked out and was hell-bent on this "Must get ANH on my hard drive SOMEHOW" mission, hehe.

The very best of luck Rikter on your much deserved sabbatical far away from this little corner of the galaxy, I wish your family and your projects lots of success, because frankly you've earned it.

*edit*

I'm starting to think something's wrong on my end because I tried copying ESB and yet again a CRC error, but what's strange is that it's on the exact same VOB as ANH. Anyway what I ended up doing was connecting to the ESB torrent with 73.8% done and trying to get the rest of it that way while uploading what I have (which it seems to be doing very well). I'm gonna try to get over to one of my friend's houses and try the disc on their computer to see if it works there, if it does then I'll go from there. Anyway sorry for all this needless information in a thread that it's not even fully intended for (we should be talking more about the actual transfer, I know) but there's a lot of people out there who are craving this disc and I'm feeling pretty useless right now and just wanted to explain why. Hopefully this will all work itself out soon, and I know my fellow seeders will pick up the slack for me and ultimately I'll be seeding this set for a good long while.

I wish I could but there's no other (working) computers in the house. Your suggestion has given me the idea though that instead of wasting the time of the other seeders downloading my files from them I should try some alternatives, maybe I can get a friend to bring over their computer or just borrow their DVD-ROM and temporarily install it in mine.
Thanks for the thought lordjedi.

I'm also one of the seeders for the Myspleen torrent and upon trying to copy the VIDEO_TS folder to my torrent DIR I was greeted with the dreaded Data Error Cyclic Redundancy Check. I'm running CDCheck on it right now to see if there's anything I can do but if worse comes to worse I'll join the torrent, download the piece I'm missing (VTS_01_4 and 01_5.vob, total size 1.08GB) and then seed until the cows come home.

If anyone can think of something better for me to do please let me know, I'm really honored to be helping out this community and I appreciate Rikter's generosity in sending me these discs so much, I'll do anything within my power to seed the crap out of these!

*edit*

I've tried CDCheck's "recover" feature on all the files that were having data cyclic redundancy errors but to no avail, I honestly don't know what the problem is because I've watched this on my standalone DVD player and it worked great, never even a hiccup! Stupid, stupid DVD drive!

ORIGINALTRILOGY.COM T-SHIRTS

Alright, I had some time to think about it and realized that my off-hand (no pun intended) shirt design idea was a little...well, facile. So I puttered around with my crippled Photoshop abilities and came up with this. Considering the inactivity of this thread it will likely never be seen, which is probably for the best.

I'm sure there's a better way to phrase this but I imagine you all get the jist of what it's saying. I'd still love to see the official t-shirt design whenever that's completed and I'll probably buy one if it's designed well, but I still might get one of my more Photoshop-friendly friends to whip this up into a better design and screenprint my own Originaltrilogy.com t-shirt. Hey, it's free advertising either way. Here's hoping this hack job inspires some discussion on the REAL design.

This thread hasn't had a response in almost a month, meaning this bit of info is probably falling on deaf ears, but I thought I would just pop your proverbial bubble and point this out:
http://www.thinkgeek.com/tshirts/pvp/712c/
PVP's Scott Kurtz has already released a "Han Shot First" t-shirt. Granted I think the phrase has more meaning when paired with this awesome website's URL but regardless it has been done.
As hostile as it may sound, I vote for the front of the shirt to have a big illustrated hand giving the middle finger accented by the phrase "Fuck your special edition" below it. Childish? Absolutely. Tactless? Of course. Attention grabbing? Without a doubt.
