Star Wars: Rise of Lord Vader WORKPRINT NOW AVAILABLE
Time

Excellent! I’ve also long pondered a Machete Order fanedit inspired by Topher Grace’s cut and came to a similar conclusion: use just the Darth Maul fight, ending with Obi-Wan’s promise, as a cold open in between A Long Time Ago and the Main Title.

I love your voiceover intro; very smoothly sets up the shift in time period without resorting to an out-of-place ’35 Years Earlier’ subtitle, wasting words in the opening crawl or even spoiling the surprise cold open.

As I’ve never tried editing this, I don’t know if the Darth Maul fight's energy could be sustained without cutting to the space and Gungan battles. Your flashbacks sidestep this issue nicely.

I’m glad you're putting it into action – ideas are worthless without execution!

I do have one suggestion. The cut after A Long Time Ago needs to be as explosive a start as the usual Main Title and possibly Duel of the Fates can’t pull it off by itself. It may work better to cut straight to the flash of a lightsaber strike – possibly from the flurry of blows just before where you started the scene – and amplify that striking noise.

Looking forward to seeing the finished product!

star wars lucasfilm text editing software?
Time

Your example isn't showing, but I'm guessing you mean the current Lucasfilm Ltd logo. The most accurate way to make your own logo resemble theirs is to manually create one in a vector art application like Adobe Illustrator. If you simply want to automated solution that is 'good enough' then I recommend Star Wars Title Sequence Generator, an app that creates custom 20th Century Fox and Lucasfilm Ltd logos, Star Wars logos and opening crawls. Here's an example of its output. If you don't have access to a Mac then unfortunately that wont help you.

This topic needs moving to the Requests and How-tos forum.

I don't remember. It's from another DVD. I use the same bar code for all my covers. Besides, it's just a bar code, doesn't matter what it's from.

The barcode is from Batman Begins.

Considering any old mobile phone or computer with a webcam can scan barcodes these days and many people now catalogue their DVD collections via barcode scanning in various media library apps (Delicious Library being a common example, and the various copycat apps for Windows), it is probably worthwhile using correct barcodes on future custom designs if they are primarily for public consumption.

That said, what would be the appropriate barcode for the fanedit? The various Star Wars videos would make some sense (as once scanned only a few text fields would need to be changed in the library apps to correct the title and producers), though if you're going for complete realism then really no barcode would be the only option.

[It should be noted: I don't personally care - my fanedit library will be purely digital soon and I only print out custom DVD art for my own projects anyway -  so don't make any changes to YOUR OWN work purely for me. Oh, and I do love the designs! :) ]

You should read the novelizations sometime. They explain a lot of stuff the movies didn't. Extra scenes, too, like Vader and the Emperor talking about Yoda in ROTJ.

Which books do you suggest I read? I'm not into the EU or the prequels, strictly OOT. I've tried to indulge in Star Wars books a few times, but never got anywhere with them.

A 'novelization' is a movie's story adapted into the form of a novel. So Ripplin isn't referring to any EU novels, just the books 'Star Wars', 'The Empire Strikes Back' and 'Return of the Jedi'.

Here's probably the cheapest way to buy them (new) - http://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Trilogy-George-Lucas/dp/0345384385/ref=ed_oe_p

Works fine in VLC and QuickTime. Probably an mplayer problem.

Actually, the latest version of Quicktime also respects the file's Video Properties Header so also displays the trailer in 16:9 ratio, giving a squished image. Easy to fix if you have the Pro version of Quicktime (just change the video track's Visual Settings and save the file), if not then just use another player.

Not sure why VLC ignores the instruction, bug maybe, or just a missing feature.

Seriously, the single word last lines is what I hate most about the crawls, it isn't petty at all, it is just a very basic graphic design and typography principle. Removing them meant the crawls were actually easier to read, lines weren't wasted and it removes a distraction for the viewer (while it is a huge distraction to me, it is still a distraction to people who have no design sense at all, they just aren't aware of it). I work as a graphic designer on an international magazine and the most time I spend on the articles is to remove those lines (either by modifying the spacing in large paragraphs to take away the line or add words to the line to even it out or in small paragraphs getting the editor to actually modify the text).

Even with that change though the crawl is still a terrible example of good typography, spacing is all over the place and the new right justified ellipsis on the last defies logic.

But, most importantly, you need to know that this change wasn't made because someone decided it had to be done (and that this wasn't a Special Edition change). The entire crawl had to be remade by hand for the 1981 re-release just to add the Episode IV - A New Hope lines, they couldn't just paste that onto their existed elements at the time. So, since it all had to be done by scratch again anyway maybe whoever re-did it thought they could space it out better this time; plus, as has already been pointed out, since they added lines, they had to also remove them to keep the crawl in time with the music. Well, they didn't have to, they could have sped it up, but considering most young children have enough trouble keeping up with it at the moment (especially on non-widescreen versions) it wouldn't have been the smartest thing to do (and it would have added another inconsistency between the two movies at the time.

How is this project coming along?

I´m so anxious to get my hands on copy of the forthcoming "Extra Extended Encore Edition". Gillean, please, put me on your list. Naturally, I´ll pay you for postage & effort. Do PM me when this project is finished.

Finally, I really praise all the hard work that is being done to make a nice DVD-r Extended version of this movie, which it deserves.

Best regards,

Thanks! I'll make sure you're added to the list. It's coming along slowly, the work magazine ended up taking longer than expected due to a whole stack of reasons (my usual three-day office week extended to six days last week and I still had to finish everything else I do on the other days!). I'll put in a few more hours tonight so hopefully I'll have better news to report tomorrow. I'd like to finish it this coming Monday.

Also, does anyone have a good video of the Waterworld stunt show from Universal Hollywood? if you've never seen this, check out the videos of it on youtube. Absolutely the best stunt show you will ever see by far. I'd love to include a good video of that on the extended edition dvd.

I was also planning on putting the stunt show on my disc, haven't found any normal-res copies though, so now I'm considering editing together several copies from YouTube. Hmmm, that said, I wonder if my dad recorded it when we went to the US many years ago...

Actually, it is more often the other way around; R4 releases generally get all the same features as R1 (or even more in many cases), but with PAL resolution. As boris mentioned, pretty much all R2 and R4 releases are the same. A good R1/R4 comparision site is michaeldvd.com.au. Of the DVDs they've reviewed they considered 3,636 releases to be even, 1,275 R1 releases to be better and 2,629 R4 releases to be better.

I'd say the real reason for the high adoption of region-free players isn't because we all buy R1 releases (I don't know anyone that does, I don't even know many that have a clue what region-coding is), but because in New Zealand region coding was actually deemed illegal and all players HAVE to be sold region-free, whereas in Australia it was seen as anti-competitive so all retailers had to mod the players on request, or often just did it anyway. Recently a retailer was trying to convince me that the opposite is now true in Australia due to the free trade agreement with the US, hadn't heard about that anywhere, but probably just because no one here cares about R1!

EzyDVD (the store boris mentioned) and JB Hifi are probably your best bets. JB Hifi usually is a little cheaper, but EzyDVD probably ships cheaper (and often have more bonuses, half their items tend to be in 'limited edition tin cases'!).

I don't think DE ever released a DVD9 of his edit, hence why you couldn't find one. I think there was little difference between the full quality size and a single DVD layer.

Editing MPEG2 on the Mac - is there a Womble clone?

That was what I was going to suggest too, since you already have it. DVD Studio Pro can cut between GOPs without recompression. If you wanted to cut exactly (or add transitions) only using the software you already have then you could cut out the GOPs that will be changed, make the changes in FCP, re-render back to MPEG2 and reinsert the new GOPs.

That said, I was looking for similar programs to Womble for Mac and thought I found a couple, can't remember what they were though! I guess I decided to just jump through all thoughs hoops I just mentioned and not pay for a new program.

[edit]SimpleMovieX is another GOP-level editor.[/edit]

[edit2]Not sure if Mpegitor would work on M2V streams, didn't read the whole page because I really should be completing the magazine that is due at the printers today![/edit2]

[edit3]Still procrastinating! Capty MPEG Edit EX may be what you're after. Again, I'm not reading descriptions, but I had seen this program in my previous quest.[/edit3]

I was just watching a Star Tours (the Star Wars Disneyland ride) video and the X-Wings actually do jump to hyperspace as soon as they pull up from the Death Star trench so there is at least an official video precedent for that happening!

I want to go on Star Tours again, pity it is on the wrong side of the world...

Oh, I was under the impression the trailer wasn't on the official DVD; the one site I visited to check didn't list any additional features. I still haven't got my copy of the DVD (on my list of movies to buy next time I'm at a decent DVD shop).

Anyway, I've now looked at a better site and can confirm that it is at least present on the Regions 1, 2 and 4 discs; so I won't be putting the trailer on the 'Extra Extended Encore Edition'.

Thanks anyway to those who were willing to help me out!

Sounds like you're under the impression that Lowry Digital were involved with effects fixes to films; this is not true. The only thing Lowry Digital were involved with was the film cleanup of dirt and scratches (oh, and stars!). Any changes or fixes were done by Lucasfilm and ILM (such as the supposed colour correction).

I guess it would have been a snap for Lowry Digital to fix, but we can't blame them for not doing something they were neither asked or paid to do. That said, the saber colour screw-up likely occured after Lowry Digital had finished with the film, so they had nothing to fix anyway.

segaflip, could you wait two weeks for this? I've made a little progress on the new discs and cover art, but a few things have come up that meant I couldn't finish it this week.

Thought I may as well post something up so it doesn't look like I'm all words! Here is an rough early version of the cover art. Still a lot of Photoshoppery needed before I bring it into InDesign to add text and screenshots, but it'll give a rough idea of where I'm going.

By the way, does anyone have a decent copy of the trailer for Waterworld? So far I'm just going to chuck a small QT copy of it in the DVD-ROM section.
