"O Lucky Man" - 3 hour version - preservation (Released)

I don’t know if there is more than one fan of this 1973 movie on this forum, but I managed to secure a laserdisc rip from a collector.

The film stars Malcom McDowell as a coffee salesman who gets caught up in a string of unpredictable events, with musical interludes by Alan Price. It was directed by Lindsay Anderson known for the cult films, “If…” and “Britannia Hospital”

In any case, it was only released on VHS and laserdisc, both which are extremely rare to come by. As far as I know, there are no plans for a DVD release.

The copy I have in question squeezes an entire 3 hour movie onto one single layer DVD. I had no idea DVD compression could do that. From what the guy told me, he just plugged his Pioneer LD player into a DVD recorder and recorded it in real time. You would expect pretty crappy quality, and it probably will look terrible on a computer monitor or a Hi-Def television, but on a regular TV it looks fine. In any case it looks better than the Divix VHS rip floating around. Plus it’s in matted widescreen.

Anyway, I know I had nothing to do with the transfer or preservation, but I thought this thread was appropriate for this website.

Theres a kind bloke on this site attempting to restore IF. I'd certainly be interested in this film as well, given its a pesudo-sequel of sorts.

I just so happened to record this from INHD a few months ago. I was unable to do a direct HD rip but I did record it to my hard drive in HQ format from S-video out at Standard Definition. The result was it took 3 DVDs in the transfer Process at 1 hour per dvd. This was at the highest bitrate my system could do and the highest quality I could manage at the time. The Picture is Letterbox with the INHD logo in the lower right hand corner of the picture (Not in the black bars) there is some very brief pixelation just after the opening credits (from the source not due to the transfer process or the encoding) but overall the picture quality is good if just a tad soft. I considered myself lucky to be able to record it at all.

I for one am very interested in this.

I have been working on a release of If... (and I beg your pardon for those patiently waiting). The project continues and it WILL be released.

I was planning or thinking about perhaps doing this film after but the copy I have is little more then a VHS rip. I would love to get my hands on this.

One of the GREAT film scores of all time (and probably the SHORTEST soundtrack album in my collection)(10 songs at 2½-3 minutes each)...

Ironically, I don't remember that the film itself made such an impression on me!

In truth I didn't see o lucky man until very recently. Despite the fact that I am a big fan of If... I was in fact when I was a boy taken to see Britannia Hospital in the theatre. If You're fimiliar with the film you can imagine what the film was like to a 5 year old (or there abouts). I remember it well.

I've been tinkering with the idea, for years, of upgrading the audio on my DVD (laserdisc rip) to include the music in stereo. It turns out to be trickier than it sounds because the audio on the film doesn't always exactly match the audio on the CD. Thoughts?
