Info, & Help: looking for... Robocop - ITV Family Friendly "Freakin' Airhead" Version

In the late 80’s the popular commercial UK channel ITV aired a version of Robocop that has slipped into legend. At a pre-watershed time of 8pm they took the classic film, removed (or should that be crudely dubbed) all of the swearing and heavily censored the violence.

Classics include:

Dick Jones: “Once I even called him (Change Voice) Airhead!”

Bob Morton: “You’re gonna be a bad mother (Change Voice) Crusher!”

Bloke shooting at Robocop in the liquor store, line changed from “F*** Me!” to “FuWHY me! FuWHY me!”

Unfortuantely I only ever watched it (with jaw dropped having seen the original version) and never recorded it - but if anyone out there has a version, I’d love to give it the full treatment it deserves !

Reminds me of the TV version of Ghostbusters which I used to have recorded off ITV.

"Everything was fine with our system until the power grid was turned off by Wally Wick here".

And i did watch a German TV showing of The Thing....

Every shot of the alien, gore, violence was edited out!

same goes for the sci-fi showing of An American Werewolf in London. they muted out EVERY swear word!

German dubbing has produced some infamous classics, unfortunately in German of course. Best example may be MY NAME IS NOBODY. I knew the German dubbed version from when I was a kid and finally I got to see the English version. Now that was hard to believe. Almost every line was different and in the German dub the actors had to speak more than double the text than in the English version.
Example? Ok.
There is a scene with a gunman with large front teeth. The gunman aims for his gun while Nobody turns his back on him. Nobody draws his gun points it over his shoulder and says:
English version: "It ain't fair shooting a man in the back."
German version: "Mouse-toothy, I think you need another pack of hot ears, I guess."

They are even talking in this movie when no one opens his mouth, nevertheless this synchro is hillarious.
AND the made a sequel to My Name is Nobody from this movie: Genio, duo compari, un pollo (1976) by replacing the name of the leading character from Joe to Nobody.

this show was rather not funny in the original, but presented one laugh after the other in the German dub.

Nothing about fanediting is easy.

This version hardly contains any vampires. It is true.

The problem in Germany is, that DVD sells via internet are only open for movies maximim rated as R (16), but the R rating is hard to achieve in germany for movies with strong violence in them. It is also forbidden to advertise for x-rated movies (18). Still the movie companies do want to sell their DVDs to a large audience and that is why there is for almost every x-rated movie an r-rated edition.
Examples:
Blade 1 without blood
From DuskTil Dawn with hardly any vampires, no shot through the hand, etc
Die Hard 1, with no violence at all
Hannibal without the brain scene, without the gut scene, without the pigs... etc
Star Ship troopers without beheadings, with hardly any bugs.

and the list never ends...

and the best example for German editions:
DAWN OF THE DEAD- GERMAN 16 edition
this one features no close up zombies at all, no flesh eating and hardly any blood. Still the movie lengtgh is 141 minutes... now how did they do that?

I'm hearing Police Academy on TV: G.W. Bailey: "Mahoney, nobody [extremely lower voice] PLAYS with me."

They changed "Screws" to "Plays." How uptight were the network censors there? You could say "Bitch" on Moonlighting but you had to change that?

Ghostbusters was interesting though, as they actually shot those lines, rather than just dubbing aimlessly. I remember re-winding and watching those moments trying to figure out if it was a dub job or not, and came to the conclusion that they really shot those asinine lines on set.

Yes, I think it was quite common to shoot alternate lines for "TV versions" of movies at that time. Beverly Hills Cop is another that springs to mind.

Ah - happy censored childhoods !

No-one has access to these do they in any format ? I know it's quite a bizarre request but I'd love to give Robocop the attention it deserves

I'm guessing babyhum might have a few of these deep in his archives !

The two that I like are from:

Back to the Future
Instead of
"holy shit doc, you desintergrated Einstein!"

You get
"Jeez Loueez doc, you decintergrated Einstein!"

and the second is from Cady Shack

Instead of
"Hey everybody let's all get laid."
It's
"Hey everybody, let's go take a shower."

I prefer both these lines, and by the way they are spoken by the real actors.

Ironic that I had to buy my Indiana Jones set from Amazon.de, because the UK release had several cuts for violence to get Temple of Doom a PG certificate.

I saw a cut of Predator on local tv several years ago that totally omitted any shots of the Pred's face after he takes his breath-mask off! Kind of ruined the finale of the film that way.

I vaguely remember the Robocop showing on ITV. Amazingly they actually had complaints about the cuts and had to show it uncut after the 9pm watershed a few weeks later.

I still think the funniest edit in a City TV (Toronto) televised showing was Predator. Apparently "mother" was too offensive when Arnie says "you're one ugly ****** fucker."

Yeah, they should've included some TV stuff on there. "Jeez Louise" was actually used instead of "Jesus Christ", not "Holy Shit." Another BTTF TV dub (which I remember it being used from other places in Biff's dialogue, because it sounds sloppily inserted:

"You caused 300 bucks damage to my car, you SON OF A BITCH. Now I'm gonna take it outta your ASS."
"You caused 300 bucks damage to my car, you SON OF A BUTTHEAD. Now I'm gonna take it outta your HYDE."
