_,,,^..^,,,_ presents the JP [ruLes] project
Jurassic Park restored using Laserdisc editions
Project mission: restore Jurassic Park 2D using audio and video from various Laserdisc editions.
Video sources: analog video captured directly from Laserdiscs.
Audio sources: uncompressed PCM and DTS soundtracks captured directly from Laserdiscs.
Subtitles sources: Based on Blu-Ray commercial release.
Project prohibition: to use DVD, BD, DVB, HDTV or any other audio or video from any digital sources.
Supplemental material: maybe will be released in a future version.
JP [ruLes]
Source Material
Video: laserdiscs
Audio: laserdiscs
Subtitles: english (full), italian and french (full and forced).
Capture setup & processing info
Hardware:
Software:
Settings:
Project status: VIDEO PROCESSING IN PROGRESS.
Captures:
I decided to use mainly the Pioneer DVL-909 as its video quality (resolution, noise, drop outs) is better than the others; the connection used is S-Video, as the laserdisc player comb filter seems slightly better than the capture card's; I also used the Pioneer CLD-D925 to make a third capture of one of the PAL italian laserdisc due to median process.
Video treatment:
main video parts are from two italian PAL laserdisc copies, one of them captured by two different laserdisc players; these captures are time and space aligned, then with AviSynth median scripts are overlaid to eliminate some noise and drop-outs; the english PAL laserdisc single capture is used when italian subtitles are on pictures, to use english subtitles or no subtitles at all, while the NTSC DTS laserdisc single capture is used where the italian and english PAL laserdiscs fades off at the end of a side, and fade on in the other side (italian) or disc (english); derainbowing, little noise reduction (new scrip used, less aggressive) and sharpen; no color correction, only levels are adjusted minimally to let the three sources match in saturation, brightness and contrast; upconversion from PAL 720x576 4:3 and NTSC 720x480 to 1280x720 16:9 - no frames are lost in the process, at the contrary, there are few frames in some laserdiscs and not in the others, so at the end the final video will show some frames more than the single capture.
Video tracks:
Audio treatment:
the original soundtracks are: english, italian and french laserdisc PCM 16bit 44.1KHz 1441kbps stereo, Dolby Surround encoded, and U.S. laserdisc DTS THX 16bit 44.1KHz 1441kbps 5.1 discrete surround.
All the soundtracks will be converted only when necessary; from PAL 25fps to 23.976fps (pitch corrected); from 44.1KHz to 48KHz; from PCM 2.0 to AC3 2.0; from DTS 5.1 to AC3 5.1.
AVCHD Audio tracks:
BD Audio tracks:
Subtitles: based on the commercial Blu-Ray; SRT format, english full, italian (literal, transcripted from dialogs) and french full and forced.
Final formats:
Jobs to do for the next version:
To do later (maybe):

Self comments: Altought there are several BD original releases, they have some problems (IMHO): the 2011 BD has a lot of edge enhancement, and the 2013 3D BD shows different colors in comparison to the laserdisc and 2011 BD, some details in dark scenes are lost, and it could not be seen in 2D, as the companion 2D disc is merely a 2011 BD version; finally, the BD are more cropped than the laserdisc, and some small details, albeit not fundamental, are lost forever in BD, but still could be seen in this project.
As I like a lot the movie - it's the first laserdisc I've bought in 1995 brand new! - I remembered it was a really good laserdisc, with powerful colors and good resolution. This is my personal homage to one of my preferred movies!
Clip download (1000 frames, silent, 25fps, x264@8000kbps): sendspace (about 40MB)

Clip looks really nice, can't wait for this to be completed! :)

Thank for the offer, Jetrell, but I have this set too, along with the "normal" CLV version... I will not use them, until someone think that its soundtrack is better or different than the UK PAL, or of my experimental conversion (from DTS to AC3 5.1 640kbps)...
If everything will go allright, it will be released next week!

I love the CAV set. Maybe I'll do my own custom transfer for home with the DTS audio I have. I am not very capable with AviSynth but I do use VirtualDub and maybe I can make a nice little presentation for my home viewing pleasure ..... having a version in letterbox is always nice.
Thanks for considering my offer. It is appreciated.

Hi there.
It's Nissen from AVS forum, just joining you here.
Visit my *NEW* Star Wars on Video Collection site:
I'd love to get a hold of the audio tracks in a lossless form. Taking the DTS LaserDisc and only providing lossy AC3 works, but better results could be achieved with a lossless format like DTS-MA.
I can encode both the 2 channel PCM and DTS into DTS-HD Master Audio if anyone wants.
“Alright twinkle-toes, what’s your exit strategy?”
I have the French laserdisc so i can give you the French PCM audio track if you are interested!
Cool project by the way :)
“English, motherf***er! Do you speak it!?”
Awesome project!
I've often wondered why nobody had done this yet.
Hi,
Its Papai 2013 (Papai 2011 in avsforum), just registered here!
Hi.
What happened to Papai 2012?
@Andrea
This sounds like a great idea. I'd be interested in seeing what the NTSC LD looks like.

Must have been chewed by Tobacca. 😃
I am behind this, looking good
It's amusing to look at the JP LD in comparison to later releases, because at the time it came out, Video Watchog's Tim Lucas accused Universal of "zoomboxing" the film, cropping picture on all four sides. But in reality, the LD actually had the most OPEN framing!
Can't wait to see this. I remember seeing (and hearing) a home theater demo of JP at a home theater specialist store, and being absolutely blown away.

Yes, amusing indeed! What source did Tim Lucas compare it to anyway? Eagerly awaiting another update from ThaiPanther.
Video for BD version is ready (20mbps); audio tracks are ready; only subtitles should be prepared (sync, and italian correction must be done).
Hope to do everything this night, or at least tomorrow.

BD version?
Great to know its coming soon!
Ok did you compare the UK pal LD with the Italian Pal LD, which one has more picture, which one is cropped, or are they the same?

Italian version is clearer and so I decided to use this (those) for the main part of the JP [ruLes]; cropping is the same for the whole movie, except for the scenes where there are subtitles, when one version has more picture on the left but less on the right and vice versa... I could always try to combine those scene to obtain some more vertical lines of resolution, but I don't think it will change a lot the project, as those scenes account for a total of less than two minutes...
I'm waiting to receive the french laserdisc soundtrack from ilovewaterslides, and meanwhile I'm reconverting video with a lower bitrate to accomodate the french soundtrack into a BD-25.
But before this, the video was ready, so I muxed it with the italian audio, all at 23.976fps, and I watched it... it's really good, better than what I've imagined, with no "plastification" due to the denoise filter... the only bad thing is that some edge halos (present on the original captures) are found on few scenes... I've tried to cancel the halos, but it's impossible without corrupting the whole image, so I decided to leave the video "as is", as the notable halos are visibles on really few scenes.

You could combine the width and height from the different sources and create short clips for those scenes, after you've finished the project. Just as extras. So we could see what the full picture looks like!
You've lowered the bitrate, but that's going to cost the picture quality won't it?
Is the picture quality deteriorated slightly?
'Cause already laserdisc has low resolution, will reducing the bitrate help.
Why don't you keep the track separate, within the package, so that the individual user can mux them. This way video quality won't have to be compromised?

It's an idea... maybe when I (if I) will release the "Making of Jurassic Park [ruLes]"... but first I'd like to release "The lost world: Jurassic Park [ruLes]"!

Consider that 8Mbps is enough for very high quality, if you have 1280x720 video... I think to leave out PCM-to-AC3 soundtracks, and retain only the DTS english and the three PCM soundtracks (english, italian, french). In this case, the bitrate will be around 16/17Mbps, more than enough for very high quality video!

Because not everyone is capable to correctly mux audio/video tracks...

Very interested in that Making of JP Rules documentary!
Great! The Lost World Jurassic Park Laserdisc project next? Wonderful!
That's good bitrate!
That's True!
JP [ruLes 1.0] - BD edition - is ready! You could find it on myspleen.
Video bitrate is 16.5Mbps, hope it will be satisfactory for all; the actual BD 1.0 takes about 21GB, as I've left intentionally enough space to include in a future the spanish and the german laserdisc soundtracks (I really, really hope someone will send me the spanish and the german laserdisc soundtrack, to release a complete euro-package of JP!)
I decided to include only the DTS (english) and PCM (english, italian, french) soundtracks, and leave out the AC3 converted files - these ones will be included into the AVCHD, if someone is still interested in it, of course!
Many thanks to ilovewaterslides for the french laserdisc soundtrack!
I've done the literal italian subtitles myself, a really hard task... it took two days, but I'm happy to have done it, because reading the "normal" subtitles don't do justice to the really good italian translation!
Waiting for your feedback, as usual!

Any chance you could post some screen caps to compare with the 2011 BD?
Sounds like an excellent project.
Some screenshots (click to view full image):
Edge halos are present in the original captures, and they are not due to the median avisynth script... if I'll find a non-Pioneer laserdisc player, I'll capture the laserdiscs again to see if is a player or disc problem...
