Thanks man, i enjoyed Empire with my son.

Remember, Highlander, you’ve both still got your full measure of life. Use it well, and your future will be glorious.

As part of the continuing Grindhouse series, we will be revisiting and reposting the 11 minute clip from Reel 4 faded Eastman in 1080p.

Details and links at AMPSdeux are coming shortly.

We're posting a clip from Reel 4 for you to experiment on. It is 11 min, 500 megs MP4, 6k bitrate.

- Uncropped

- Unstabilized

- No color correction (Red faded)

- Original dirt and scratches

- Warping

- Tears

- Some visible effects shots

- No sound

- Header and tail included

This is for people to play around with, and see if they can recover information from it.

We recommend recoloring the scenes using a different source, as these are too faded to really restore.

Details, and links at reddit under AMPSdeux.

Just to update the status of this:

------------------------------------------

Currently working on cleanup of Reel 1, Reel 3, and 6.

Some short previews of completed parts of Reel 1 coming up.

------------------------------------------

We are working on an early preview Workprint of the whole print in 1080p, just to get an idea of how it will look.

There is color correction for Reel 1, and partially done for other reels.

This will incorporate all cleaned footage, including the crawl and end credits.

Running some low bitrate tests first, and the results are surprisingly good.

Of course, audio and other parts are temporary also.

We hope to post some screen shots and videos via reddit at AMPSdeux.

We have a scan of the 1981 crawl, in case it will be needed for an alternate version.

As someone whose earliest memories of Star Wars are from TV and home video, this makes me incredibly happy.  The '81 reissue has been and remains my preferred version.

It would be pretty swell if that 81 crawl was posted on ampsdeux ;p

Here is a 2 minute clip used to patch the Super 8mm, at the end of its 2nd reel:

We have completed a first hybrid 1080p cut of our Workprint. The results look very good with the completed footage we have so far.

Some scenes look spectacular despite the damage that was on the print.

As work continues on the remaining reels, we will revisit this workprint as more footage becomes available.

There will be a basic color correction done on some of the scenes.

Some scenes have stabilization applied.

There is minor cropping done also.

We will have some upcoming previews posted at AMPSdeux.

It's very nice. I just don't understand why put all this effort into the 8mm print (which is to receive a better scan anyway), when you have the 35mm scans and from what I've seen of them, they could be used for a grindhouse release with much better results and the same amount of effort - or am I wrong about that?

I think this last post is a bout the 35mm, and the post before that is a preview of some 35mm footage they used to fill a gap in the 8mm.

Oh, I'm sorry, I got confused. In that case I'm happy to hear you've made such progress :-)

Hi Harmy, no problem. We should have clarified it better.

And just to let everyone know.

Currently, we are working on several projects.

===============================================

1 First priority - Star Wars 35mm LPP with a few hybrid Eastman
  shot replacements

2 Cleanup and restoration of Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi 35mm

3 Other 8mm/16mm versions of the trilogy.

Future plans might include:

----------------------------

- SE versions trilogy

- Prequel trilogy

The Super 8mm side project took about a week, but was delayed a year due to

the sources. You know how that goes. Also, as a bonus, we got to sneak in a

small preview of the 35mm LPP into it.

If the Empire Strikes Back 16mm LPP shows up, we will look at that also.

Yes, we could easily release a better Grindhouse for Star Wars, but we would

rather wait until we have a version that does the movie justice.

We don't have a fixed timetable for release. But we feel putting out some

intermediate releases will keep people happy until they are ready.

Due to some fortunate circumstances, we were able to put out a lot

of the archival versions of Empire Strikes Back for people to

enjoy ahead of time.

We do think Return of the Jedi should take a lot less time to complete

due to relatively good condition the prints are in.

Thanks for checking back with us.

I thought the Grindhouse ESB was fantastic, very organic and a joy to watch.

I don't see why Star Wars and Jedi couldn't be released without major work. I understand that Jedi is in better shape but why not give fans the option?

Author

 (Edited)

The option is to watch them when they are completed after Star Wars. That has been the plan for the last few years. We only have so many people that can work on it in their spare time. After -1 left the team, we have reorganized and added more people and lost some.

The Empire Strikes Back project was done on the side and released as a thank you to the community.

We will continue what we have planned, and know that the community will be excited with the completed projects. Since this the only major 35mm restoration being actually released, it needs to be handled with the care we have given to it.

I understand and do appreciate the team's efforts. I just loved the ESB grindhouse and thought it'd be cool to see the others like that.

Author

We will definitely be releasing the Grindhouse, Test, and Preview versions of all the films, afterwards also.

We think it's important to preserve the history and intermediate steps taken with all of them.

Also, they're fun to watch, and useful for other edits.

What about Final versions? With all cleanup completed?

What is your question. The completed versions are what we are working on first.
