RE: Your first reaction to Hayden is ROTJ

My heart just sank when I first saw it. It had been sneaked onto YouTube or something a few days before the official release, and I was hoping it was some fan pulling our legs.

It just makes no sense to me, because it is LUKE, and Luke only who is seeing these force images right? Nobody else in the celebration sees them... Presumably Luke had never seen Anakin in his younger guise. He views Ben as he did when he last saw him, ditto for Yoda too. So why does Anakin suddenly appear younger? I can (grits teeth!) sorta understand Lucas wanting to tie the trilogies together, but this was NOT done correctly or intelligently. Luke's vision of Anakin would have been as the man he last saw on the Death Star.

Second is the fact it was done 'on the cheap' by just quickly inserting Hayden's head over Shaw's body. Stunningly lazy work for one of THE iconic & important shots in the entire trilogy! I can just imagine Lucas sitting in a chair, surrounded by monitors, kicking back, sucking on another Cola and lazily just ordering one of his minions to replace Shaw's head "gee I bet the fan's will go crazy over this change - haha!".

ARGHHHHHHHH!

Meh.

Two things...

(1) sorry I couldn't parse your sentence... "I was why Lucas why i..." ????

(2) can someone go back and fix the title of this thread?  "is" should be "in".

But then it wouldn't be as funny.

The victory celebration fits perfectly. I always hated the 'Yub Nub' song.

Fixed...I think.

Thanks, that makes more sense.  I honestly couldn't figure that out.  Now Hayden really IS rotj.

I hadn't been following the release online so it was totally new to me.

At first I was disgusted, then a few seconds later I shook my head and thought "why am I not surprised?" and honestly wasn't quite as upset then. I don't plan on ever having to see that scene again though.

It ruined one of the most powerful lessons of the series.  The ghost of Old Anakin symbolized that while he could not undo the many terrible things he had done, he could still make amends and seek forgiveness.  Old Anakin symbolized a wasted lifetime.  Hayden's ghost basically gives the character a free pass.  Plus, Old Anakin fits with what we had just seen in the movie - a tired old man trapped in an iron lung, desperately wanting to get out.  Now, in death, he has his release.  The notion that his ghost can just "go back" makes no sense, literally or metaphorically.

I was disgusted. Not only does Shaw evoke so much more emotional depth in his "performance" - and all he was told during the filming of that shot was to "smile and look happy" - but he just fits better. Luke wouldn't recognize Hayden, anyways.

Plus, Shaw has a warm, fatherly smile - Hayden's creepy glower makes him look like some kind of child molester!

Let's just hope that Lucas doesn't give us any more unwanted "surprises" - like, heaven forbid, replacing Shaw in the scene with Luke with a CGI-pasted Hayden. That would be the last straw.

And I miss unmasked Shaw's eyebrows!! :(

GL didn't have the technology back then to have a younger actor stand-in for that scene.

May the midichlorians be with you.

I liked the change and wasn't attatched to the original guy. The reasoning behind the change is acceptable. He reverted to when he was last good.

Hey mathuser.... I respect your opinion on the artistic validity of the change. I'm curious what you think of changes like this to a film in the context of the original not also being made available?

Wasn't he last good, the moment he decided to save his son and stop following the Emperor's bidding and generally the Dark Side?  Maybe you meant last pure or something, but then they should have used an Anakin from AotC, that Tusken Raider's homicide doesn't seem like a light side thing to do...

The original was made available for a while so I'm not worried about that. Yes he did one good thing before he died but maybe not a big enough change to call him good.

I would say sacrificing himself to save his son and kill the Emperor wasn't exactly a ho-hum act...it certainly seemed to work in the context of the trilogy.  With no dialogue needed.

What good, selfless acts did PT Anakin perform?

PT Anakin was a bodyguard for a while so he probably did that alot. He also fought in the Clone wars for the side of good.

Being a bodyguard isn't necessarily good - you might be protecting bad people, who knows? As for the Clone Wars, there WAS no "side of good," since the Clone Troopers were developed with the sole intention of providing a dangerous, treasonous army for the Republic, and the opening crawl for Episode III says that "there are heroes on both sides."

Of course lame reasons like that are why I don't bother considering the prequel trilogy canon, but PT Anakin was not a good, selfless person. Now please stop taking this thread off-topic!

RE: Your first reaction to Hayden in ROTJ

Putting Hayden's rapist/creepy face in there was IMO, Lucas' worst change for RoTJ.   Definitely ruined what was supposed to be a great scene.

And it arguably doesnt even make sense.   Since Obi-Wan's spirit is shown as his older self, not his prequel self.  Which presumably, is because he died at that age.

(The whole "Jedi Rocks" singing CGI scene comes a close second.   Although that stupid singing scene I can skip since its not important.  I can't skip that final celebration scene for RoTJ.)

However, I actually don't mind and quite enjoy the music change in the end celebration scene...actually felt it fit better with that scene and sounded more meaningful and fitting as the end to a whole epic saga/journey.

Anyone else agree?

I agree that it's a nice piece of music, but I disagree that it fits well in ROTJ.  All of the films score have been "orchestral" until that point (except for when there is a band playing within the films... Jabba's Palace for example) and then BAM there's this unprecedented "new age" music complete with a loud bass guitar.  Completely flies in the face of, and doesn't jibe with the scores of the rest of the films.  Again, except for "Jedi Rocks" (which, while awful, takes place within the film, rather than being part of it's score) I can't think of any other "new age" music or bass guitar in the other films. To me, it just doesn't work as SW music.  YMMV.
