I think it's pretty sad that people rather watch crappy versions just because they're in better image quality. I guess that explains the present Hollywood, then. I mean, people watched movies on VHS for 20 years!
A nice new VHS tape had a much better image than the current GOUT DVD.

That's the thing...the only 77 version I have is the dvd release...and let's be honest...the quality isn't that good.
So? Why is that an issue? It's not like it's unwatchable.

Very untrue. I picked up a mint copy of the 95 WS Tapes that still had the factory seal on most of it. Had never been played. Looked like an even crappier GOUT. No matter the condition 248p will never match 420p and above.

yavasizadooThat is totally ridiculous. The Faces VHS and the GOUT come from the same digital master, so if the GOUT looks crappy then the VHS does too......and then cut the resolution of the GOUT in HALF and you've got yourself the VHS tapes. You obviously don't own the GOUT because even Stevie Wonder could see the improvement.

Don't show any SW virgin the Special Editions! What a horrid thing to do to someone. If you don't want to use the GOUT, then use dark_jedi's versions, and show them in the order they were released. If we were meant to see TPM first, then it would have been filmed first. IMO. :-)

No Shit!Well....I don't think she was over impressed by ANH...Silly bitch!!!!
I showed her Ady's ANH:R purist version....Which I know is not the true original, but it's as close as I'm gonna get right now....(and don't start on me about the quality thing....the gout looks crap on a big tv..fact..If I had a good version of the 77 film, then yes, I'd have watched that)
Apart from me falling asleep, which didn't go down to well, she thought it was ok but got bored around 30 mins from the end. Unbelievable!!!
Still, there's always the greatest film ever to get her interested again..The Empire Strikes back!!

Reginald ScumMan, your girlfriend is lame.
Seriously, I could never be with anybody who didn't think Star Wars was one of the best things ever. When I was 17 I had a thing for a girl in the year above me, and after working up the nerve to call her I was horrified to discover that she had never seen Star Wars and never wanted to, deriding it as some silly kids' movie. My interest in her faded very quickly after that conversation, I can assure you! But I'm very lucky to now have an excellent girlfriend who shares my enthusiasm. It sounds trivial, I suppose, but it's such an important part of my life that to have it belittled or merely tolerated would just be insulting, and I couldn't stand for such a thing. lol
If she found the original film boring, chances are you'd be doing her a favour to just stick with the original trilogy and not bother with the prequels, since the snooze factor of those is amped up considerably. Be glad you didn't start with them, or you'd never get her to agree to watch the real films at all.
The illusion is complete. It is reality, the reality is illusion, and the ambiguity is the only truth. But is the truth, as Hitchcock observes, in the box? No, there isn't room; the ambiguity has put on weight. --Gavin Milarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

No Shit!My girlfriend is a beautiful specimen...:)
And she doesn't hate the film...She's only watching them because I love them so much, and she loves me...haha
She did think it was better than she thought it was going to be...and is actually looking forward to Empire...So, it's not all bad!!!
And, if she didn't like the films, well, I really don't think that's a reason to dump her...She has many, many qualities about her that makes her dislike of Star Wars worth it!!

Jedi KnightYeah, my girlfriend HATES Star Wars. I thought maybe she would enjoy Empire more, but she thought it was worse. Needless to say, I didn't show her Jedi. Which is weird because Wizard of Oz is her favourite film, and she loves Harry Potter and LOTR and that sort of thing. She likes classic cinema, but she says she could never invest in vintage special effects films because she could never suspend her disbelief, except for Oz but that was a childhood thing. But hey, whatever. Part of me is glad, because if I was with someone who was into the films as much as me it would be waaay too much Star Wars in my life.

I'm not talking about either Revisited or the 2004 DVDs. I'm talking about the original version. And no matter what the quality, watching the original is always preferable to anything else. The GOUT isn't great, but it's certainly watchable.

of Earth.Eh... I don't mean to brag or anything... but on my home equipment... the GOUT is not watchable. Seriously, after the whole family watched SW:R last year, the kids and I wanted to watch the rest of the trilogy. I didn't own the GOUT because I bought the 2004 DVDs when they came out, but I did have the TR47 DVDs. I netflixed the GOUT and also started looking for a decent enough De-specialized edition online, which I couldn't find in time. We started to watch GOUT ESB, and it was just unwatchable to us. We folded and I convinced myself that there were only two or three unacceptable changes in ESB:SE anyways. We tried GOUT RotJ as well... We ended up watching 2004 RotJ, except I fastforwarded through the new LaptiNek song, and I put the GOUT in for the last 5 minutes to avoid Hayden and Weesa FreeTM.

of Earth. No I haven't. Adywan's ESB Reconstruction looks fantastic. But I haven't found a goto RotJ. I'm happy enough with SW:R. I mean, I think the original cut of SW'77 should be available, but I'm not against all changes. If they're for the better, and they're seen as an "alternative" cut, then that's fine with me and probably what I'd rather watch any given day of the week.

yavasizadooI wasn't claiming that the GOUT was "watchable" on a huge TV screen (I've only seen it on my puny little 32"), just agreeing that it was preferable to watching any VHS copy or SE version (which it is).
