Which HD-DVD is better than Blu-Ray?

Just today I bought the XBOX360 HD-DVD player, along with some movies (hope to find the way to connect it to my PC and rip them...) and I asked myself "Which of these one is better than its BD counterpart, and so should be preserved?" - then, next question was "and, in general, which HD-DVD is better than Blu-Ray?"

As I leant recently, "The Thing" is for sure better in HD-DVD, and I read some time ago that there some that are slightly better, and other really really better...

Well, let's start with mine - ah, I love dead video formats...

  1. 2 Fast 2 Furious
  2. Blade Runner (The Final Cut)
  3. Casino
  4. The Chronicles of Riddick (Director's Cut)
  5. Daylight
  6. I now pronounce you Chuck & Larry
  7. Pride & Prejudice
  8. Red Dragon
  9. The Skeleton Key
  10. Swordfish
  11. Waterworld

I have also Casino, Daylight and Waterworld on laserdisc, both DTS and italian PCM (Daylight even in AC3) - if these versions are better than BD, I will add DTS soundtracks.

Wait for your comments.

XBOX360 HD-DVD player

I am unsure if you will be able to rip with this drive.  I have AnyDVD-HD and an LG Bluray/HD-DVD writer which does this fine.

Check around before you get too excited Andrea.  I've seen threads where folks have had trouble doing with it what you want to do.

I paid all less than a brand new HD-DVD movie, so it's not a huge problem, at the end (^^,)

The question is still open, though!

LMAO! I just have to answer this, do not listen to him, go ahead and get excited, the Xbox 360 HD DVD player is what most people, if not all I know that does these kinds of projects use, I use it myself, so YES you can rip your HD DVD's with what you have, you just need to make sure you get the driver is all.

U571 (though the DVHS beats them both) and the Bourne films.

DJ, it's all your fault if I've bought another damn dead format drive along with movies... (^^,) well, now it's mine, could you please tell me where to get the driver(s) needed, and which kind of software to use for ripping (preferably free) that could also manage VC1?

Thanks!!!

Yep, the Xbox drive is just great. I've used AnyDVD to rip to a folder, and then ClownBD to restructure it into a Blu-ray... just be aware that Dolby Digital Plus isn't supported by Blu-ray players so needs to be downconverted to standard DD (unless you're replacing the soundtrack altogether).

Also Apollo 13 is much better in HD-DVD.

Dolby Digital+ shows up on my BD's when played, my HD receiver even shows DD+ when watching.

BD could decode only the surround channels from DD+, and the others will be treated as "simple" AC3; so, a DD+ from HD-DVD could be encoded in another format, as LPCM or DTS.

Fair enough, I guess some decks are more flexible than others. I should have been more specific - it's an 'optional' format for BD but a standard for HD-DVD, and since the HD-DVD version has no core DD stream you won't hear anything if your player doesn't support it.

Animal House is much much better on HD-DVD and also Streets of Fire with Diane Lane is only available on HD-DVD.  It looks incredible if you're into DL in her prime.

d_j,

If you HAVE a problem with me, take it to pm, do NOT bring it into someone's thread.  Otherwise I WILL ask a moderator to step in.

Thanks

In Jonno's thread, you talked about the fact that your UK "The Thing" HD-DVD was coupled perfectly with BD soundtrack, at the contrary the US HD-DVD version was not in sync... do you know why?

My apologies Andrea, I was only trying to help.  I'm glad it's going to work just fine.  Very cool for you to have a new format to check out.

It is on my to do list but probably not by the whole Team, we have to many projects going at once lol for me to add more, so what I am doing is just getting the movie on BD with the audio and chapters, so it is a "movie only" but at least it can be watched and enjoyed.

Except for Feast, since this is the only Unrated version I wanted to include this film and the other 2 sequels as extras since I am fairly certain those will not get a BD release.

Maybe it's time to do "Apollo 13 [spoRv]" (new acronym, do you like it?) - HD-DVD video with LD DTS audio (and, if needed, LD chroma too...)

I do have cinema DTS for this one ..... so if it's a consideration, let me know.  We'll get it worked up for you.
