It's funny how you go around claiming I was challenging dictionary definitions (while all I was challenging, was the graphic's and YOURS - how tall are you?), right after telling me how disinterested you are in reading any of that.


If you're so hung up on "dictionaries", here's a thing: dictionaries usually contain MULTIPLE meanings of the same word.
Like, "opinion" can have the meaning of "taste", as well as that of an insufficiently proven view of some situation (which wouldn't have anything to do with "taste" anymore).

So if I point out this obvious distinction, and how there is a number of different notions that can be called "an opinion", and you should better define what kind you're referring to, I'm not really challenging the dictionary, I SUPPORT it.

But I agree with you on one thing, I really do challenge the dictionary when I make a distinction between "fact" and "knowledge", and saying it would make for a more precise juxtapposition to "opinion".
Not sure if I challenge the established terms if I say that an opinion, as such, is a fact, but not its content. Like, the fact that an important individual, or a percentage of a population, has a certain "opinion", can be part of a statistic as well, and influence education programs and marketing strategies while at it, but its content isn't factual. You tell me.

But challenging some sloppy post of yours is obviously the same as going against the academic community, in your perception. No comment required.

Already two completely different meanings. Passing an "opinion as a fact" would be two completely different things, depending on which meaning you're using. The rebuttals would have to be different, too.
In one case, you explain how the evidence or reasoning is insufficient, in the other, you get philosophical about subjectivity and objectivity, and how there is a distinction between the two main mental states, one of which is about knowledge of the external world, and the other about appraisal, values, and conceptions of how one's own ideal world might look like.


So which is it now? Have I passed a judgment as a proven fact? Or maybe stated my personal taste as a well-founded judgment? Or maybe I claimed to have scientific proof for how fun the remake of King Kong is?
Or have I just stated a well-founded opinion as a well-founded opinion, in contrast to someone else's poorly-founded opinion, and that got their feelings all hurt?

I'm waiting for examples. :D

1) Why do you put random words in quotation marks? Words are put in quotation marks if they're referring to a quote, to distance oneself from the expression, or as a form of ironic emphasis.
You just seem to put them wherever you want. So why you're doing that?

On a related note, why do you also use Christopher Walken caps?

2) When you say "now instead of fighting the dictionary", do you say "now", with the clear implication that I've ever fought the dictionary in the first place, on purpose, or are you really too dense/proud to get that THERE WAS NEVER ANY FIGHTING OF DICTIONARIES IN THE FIRST PLACE?

3) So where are the examples?
