Well I only started reading and understanding (in a vaguely adult way) books when I was 14-15 so kudos for that.

I'm not alone on these boards at reading Dracula when I was under ten (I was 8 TheBoost was a little bit older, if I remember correctly).

I've said before that Hardware Wars captured the spirit of Star Wars better than the prequels did.

Guess I'm sayin' it again. ;-)

In terms of capturing  my attention I had two main obsessions as a child Doctor Who and Star Wars but Blakes 7 came a close third.

All three could at times be very grim and deal with some pretty scary stuff (even if the BBC budget didn't stretch to the same production values that Star Wars still has).

Servalan and Avon are pretty amazing characters.

Much more compelling than any of the characters in the PT.

Imagine if they were Luke and Leia's parents, what a saga that would have been.

I had totally forgotten 'Centurions'. Can't really remember the TV show but I did have one of the toys that was a favourite.

I had this one:

The new Battlestar Galactica had me hooked, at least the characters had a bit of depth to them unlike the Prequels

New BG was the best thing since B5 but I can't see the SW connection, it was way too dark for that. The original on the other hand was perhaps the ultimate Star Wars clone. The costumes, the characters and especially the ship model work.

I'm sure Ralph McQuarrie had nothing to do with the similarities...

Before NuGalactica this was the nearest I got to the big battle at the end of ROTJ.

Back then it was startling to think such things were possible on television.

There is only one Doctor (he just has many faces).

My first was Jon Pertwee but I will always have a special place in my hearts for Tom.

If we're straying into televsion, I should mention the most Star Wars influenced cartoon of the early 80's.

A Revenge of the Jedi poster actually appeared in an episode. (Hey, it was 1982!) I can't help but think the post apocalyptic setting heavily influenced the creators of Adventure Time. Both shows blend magic and technology, and abound with weird mutated creatures.

I was much relieved when the world as we know it didn't end in 1994...

I did watch it.

What I meant was, I had no memory of seeing back in the day. I guess I must have seen it briefly, to want the toys.

You know thinking about it, the success of SW guarenteed 90% of the cartoons I watched on saturday mornings in the 80s were basically awesome.

Thanks SW!

e.g. Galaxy Rangers... (Click to play)

I maybe wrong, but wasnt the Hobbit more a children's story than LOTR? LOTR dealt with more 'adult' issues such as power, corruption and greed albeit in a fantasy setting. Star Wars was unique because you loved it as a kid in a very one dimensional kind of way, and grew to understand the deeper tones of it as you got older. I don't know many (if any) 5-10 year olds that fell in love with LOTR the first time they saw it.

I was in that age range when I first saw LOTR, when it first came out. And I fell very deeply in love with it, a love that was second only to my love of the OT.

And I was not the only one. I had a fair share of friends my age who fell in love with the LOTR films when they came out. Probably not the same amount as when SW came out, in terms of the age range; but that's more due to the films' violence and PG-13 rating which made some parents a little less likely to let their kids see them; rather than because the movies didn't share the same magical quality as the OT.

Trust me, LOTR is my generation's Star Wars.

This! Too bad Ernie Fosselius never got around to zinging ESB. By the time of ROTJ, he was working for George!

Interesting- I just googled it & I had no idea EF did voices and sound effects for ROTJ.
