This hands down:

The follow up was disappointing but I'm still waiting for another entry in the series someday....

I wasn't impressed with level design in Jedi Knight, everything reeked of "Quake multiplayer arenas"

There was something about the huge levels in DF2 that I adored. Walking Kyle over tiny gantrys spanning huge cavernous depths, or inching round corners of towering buildings was intense. Especially when brutal cross winds cold just blow you off, followed by a long, long drop and sound of broken bones. But yes the level graphics were sub par which was much improed with Outcast.

It had REAL heights was the thing. If I walk a character of a height in most games I  get a little death animation. In DF2 you felt the whole drop. Plus if you force-pushed a baddie off something you got the satisfaction of watching him all the way down lol

My top4:

  1. Knight of the Old Republic
  2. X-Wing Alliance
  3. TIE Fighter
  4. Dark Forces: Jedi Knight

Then it becomes a little harder to say since there are many solid games... Honorable mentions go to X-Wing, Jedi Outcast, X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter, Dark Forces, Rogue Squadron, Rebel Commando, Galactic Battlegrounds and the fun Lego SW: OT. Rebel Assaults were also enjoyable as a kid, especially the second one, but they aren't that great in a game-sense.

I own all SW games (not related to PT) up until Galactic Battlegrounds, which was released in 2001 I think. The few I haven't been able to complete are unfortunately XW and TF, still being stuck on those. I don't think I've finished Dark Forces either, a very good and dark game like most from the early 90s. One is also SotE, I don't remember what level it was but to me it was pretty boring and quite hard. I remember fighting IG-88 which was damn difficult, then Dash dropped inside a rock and I probably defeated him from shooting there... Not a very well made game. Rebellion is also one of my unfinished games, I think it's a very interesting and challenging game but I have not yet succeeded in winning, it just kills the motivation after dozens of times.

In that sense I did appreciate it - I recall a level where an elevator took you to a docked starship, the ride lasted probably a minute? What I didn't like was the design of the rooms: too much "empty hangar with flat walls" copy&paste job, not enough detail etc.

Early Jedi Outcast levels fixed this.

In a thread about the closing of LucasArts I've complained about games we never got, another one would be:

why no X-Com / Jagged Alliance style game? Imagine we lead a team of Rebel saboteurs, infiltrating Imperial bases, turn-based combat et all...

I saw the original theatrical release of the Old Trilogy on the big screen and I'm proud of it...
How did I accomplish that (considering my age) is my secret...

I enjoyed Jedi Outcast but I fluked the ending which was a letdown.

For me nothing feels more like being inside the Star Wars universe than :

The radio version had Luke having a crash course on X-wing controls on a simulator and that what it felt like when I was a kid.

Vector graphics (like BBC Radiophonic music) still feel futuristic to me (I know Star Wars is set in the past but I digress).

The opening mission of Rebel Assault is love letter to the game.

Christ yeah I remember this. It was fantastic! I remember going on holiday to Devon when I was younger and it was in the arcade on the site we we stayed at. 10p a go (if you managed to get on it!)

I had so much fun with the mods and cheat codes for JK II. There was one that turned all the bad guys, (or good guys) into Jar Jar. That plus unlocking realistic saber combat got a lot of stress out of my system. ;)

When I was having a bad day, I would embrace the dark side. I would fill that stardestroyer hangar level full of bad guys, then vent them into space.

Yes modding was great. I pasted me and my friends faces onto the skins of multiplayer characters so we could face off for real. We'd usually kill each other while we were still having a text gloat from the last kill by typing in something like "Now I am the master" or "You are beaten, it is useless to res..." = ZAP!

Whaaaaaat?

In truth my all time favourite Star Wars 'Game' is probably the app that turns my iPhone into a lightsaber.  I've had it on my phone for 3 or more years but that shit never gets tired.

I liked the Atari ESB console game - I still have it among my collection.

This is not a lightsaber. Nor a euphemism.

These are my favourites:

Prequel Trilogy was supposed to be a story about a good man turning bad. In reality, it is a story about how a complete jerk (PT Anakin) turned into one of the best characters in film history (OT Vader)

Never spotted the ESB arcade game in the wild, and the ROTJ one was kind of a letdown not being vector graphics.

There are or at least were, efforts afoot to rectify this.

The Best game would have Battlefront 3 to bad Luca$ pulled the plug.

A game that was very close to being done.  Unlike Kotor III which was never even made.

My vote for game released is for the original X-Wing  floppy disc version.

Or Dark Forces if it was not such a shameless knockoff of doom II/wolfenstein.

Loved the Vector graphics star wars too bad every machine of it i ever found was in poor unrestored shape.

What always jarred me out of the experience however was that it was clearly not Alec Guiness as Obi Wan in the game  and also that lasers work on destroying the death star its supposed to be ray shielded and only proton torpedoes should work.

Shameless knockoff? Don't be ridiculous! Yeah, it was a first person shooter, and that was pretty much how they looked back then. DF, outside of being a great Star Wars game, was one of the major pioneers of the FPS genre. It was so much more advanced than Doom and Wolfenstein.

Silly to claim it is a Doom II knockoff, since both Doom II and Dark Forces were in development at the same time, and released just a few months apart from one another. Or, at least that would be a silly claim, if Doom II were anything more than the exact same game as the original Doom only with new levels and a few very minor tweaks. Dark Forces introduced ducking, jumping, and looking up and down to first person shooters for the first time. While Doom II was still relying all on 2D sprites, Dark Forces was implementing real 3D models.

So, while id Software was essentially modding Doom into Doom II by adding a few new monsters, LucasArts was designing a major leap in what is now perhaps the most popular video game genre today.

Pfft! Shameless knockoff, indeed!

RE: What is/was the best SW Game ever, on any platform?

I was not speaking of the game controls they looked similar.

Played Similar if not for the tweaks you mentioned minor things "introduced ducking, jumping, and looking up"

They also were trying to sell the game to the same audience.  That Bought DOOM I and Doom II, And Wolfenstein.

I liked the game and noticed the jumping aspect but it was not exactly mind blowing.

Yeah the level design was much more impressive and such but still the same concept only better.  Its like we can do a similar style game but make it better.

They went much more star wars style when they made Kyle Katarn a Jedi or force sensitive.

Watch carefully - your X-wing launches torpedoes into the exhaust port at the end of the trench run (assuming you hit it with your lasers).

The top one for me is definitely TIE Fighter... awesome game, awesome soundtrack, awesome mission design. It enhanced what X-Wing started in practically every possible way.

I did play a bit of Dark Forces, but it never sucked me in as much as Jedi Knight did when it came out. Technically it was incredible for its time (sure, there was Quake, but JK had the SW bonus added to that). And just as it was between TF and XW, Jedi Outcast improved on Jedi Knight just as much.

Knights of the Old Republic was fantastic too, and Knights of the Old Repuclic II - The Sith Lords (which was much weaker than its predecessor, suffering from its rushed release) is the last Star Wars video game I've played.

I still hope there's a chance for a next-gen space battle game set in the (OT) Star Wars universe.

And since we're talking "games" and not only "video games", I can highly recommend the X-Wing Miniatures Game, which I'm playing a lot lately.

Wasn't DF using Doom's base code, as were many other 3D shooters at the time?

 No.

I'm with CP3S here, Dark Forces was much better than the many games that appeared after Doom. Not all of those games were shameless clones.

Indeed and is it really not a sample of Sir Alec?

If it isn't it's not as obvious as you are making out Skyguy.
