What does the blu-ray set have to offer?

Or, more appropriately, will the blu-ray set really be worth buying solely for the movies?

Let me explain. Here are a couple of screen captures from Wookiegroomer's RoTJ (DVD9 version). I believe this release was created from the German HD broadcast, but I could be wrong.

[ PNG, 1.3mb ]

[ PNG, 1mb ]

Very high quality stuff, I'm sure you'll agree. Aside from the obvious benefits of a much larger storage medium, can we really expect a huge quality increase next year when the blu-ray is released? Will Lucasfilm even bother with new scans of the OT, or will they stick to the 1080p HDTV master that Lucas and co. seem quite happy with?

Audio too. Do you think they will go back and fix the godawful soundtrack of the DVD release?

I think when the Blu-rays come out owning the DVD's are no longer grey area enough for downloading HDTV rips. And so those will essentially become obsolete.

And I also think there will be improvements based on feedback from the DVD's. Hopefully.

Judge to answer your question my guess is their will be new transfers of the films to Blu-Ray because when you restore a film to blu-ray you can't just slap on the dvd transfer of the films you have to make new masters of the films to HD. As far as the sound goes let's all hope the soundtrack is good for blu-ray and fixed this time around.

The masters used to make the DVDs were, in fact, 1080p.  That's where the HD broadcasts came from.  I doubt we'll be getting new transfers.

Yep you are right.  Lucasfilm did the scan at 1080 only and sent the hard-drives to Lowry to do the DVNR process, and grain removal. frame repairs and whatever else they did.  They were not responsible for the color timing as ILM did that with Lucas in charge, lol.

So far all we know is that star wars 2004 special edition is getting a new lossless mix from the same guy who did that bad 2004 one, Wood.

I am almost sure it will be DTS-HD, as the audio carrier/codec makes very little difference.  DOLBY-HD is a lower bitrate but if from the same sound master they would sound almost identical from a blind test.

Adywan said it looked like to his eyes Phantom Menace was given a new transfer, but without any official word on that it is just hearsay.  Though i trust his word above a great many other posters, because he was not putting us all on.

Transfer, schmansfer.  They are the SE's, I don't care if they are 1080p or 480p.

Has any word been released on what kind of extras this set has to offer?

New deleted scenes, probably for all six movies, in HD.

If they are in HD, then I'm gonna have to think about it.

The audio has been confirmed to have been remixed. Probably because they wanted to do some sort of 7.1 HD audio version, so they decided to just start over. The picture I am sure will be pretty much the same; I can imagine them fixing some of the lightsaber issues, but I would say there is an equal chance that everything will be left exactly as they are.

As for whether the picture will be better than the broadcast versions enough to justify plunking down what will be probably $70-90...well, that all depends on how much you enjoy the SE. For some, there's no price that justifies it, for others they might be willing to if it was priced right. But as to whether the picture will be significantly improved period, I would say yes. The difference will not be extreme or anything, because some of the HD broadcast versions are quite good. But it definitely will look and sound much better on Blu Ray (well--in theory, anyway, you never know with LFL these days). And of course the set will have other value-added material, including some new docs but more importantly deleted scenes that I have a suspicion will be in HD. The deleted scenes will probably be put on Youtube (and yanked, and then put back on, etc.). In any case, if you really just wanted to see this stuff you can always rent the set; if I had a BD player that's what I would do, just to satisfy my curiosity of seeing the films in HD and also checking out the new supplementary stuff.

"I think when the Blu-rays come out owning the DVD's are no longer grey area enough for downloading HDTV rips. And so those will essentially become obsolete."

They will  become obsolete, but only because the BD will be of higher quality so there would be no point in holding on to lesser transfers. Unless the films are changed again, but I personally doubt there will be any changes.

Matt wood has spoken about the new audio mix for Epiosde 4 on the forecasts podcast. There is a bit about it here:

http://www.slashfilm.com/new-star-wars-wars-audio-mix-created-3d-re-release-still-coming/

And this will put an end to you saying the sound mix will be fixed for the blu-ray release after reading above about the new Obi-Wan Howl in Ep4. Just take a listen to the new howl:

http://hotfile.com/dl/77458223/09f6e53/obi-wans_new_roar.mp3.html

You seriously can't tell me that this is going to be a better mix after hearing that monstrosity.  I think they have all lost their minds. And before you say it, no, this isn't fake. It's taken direct from the new "sounds of Star Wars book"

Ain't no lie. I forget where you originally posted this Ady, but I rushed out to Borders too see for myself. It's just too ridiculous. I really can not believe anyone would think it sounds anything but silly.

...then again, I couldn't believe that the original cg Jabba was approved for the New Hope SE.. Or the horrible herky-jerky movement of a cut-and-moved Han dogging Greedos blaster fire... or a stupid cg band for Jabba's palace... or... ok. Never mind. I believe it. ...sigh.

RE: What does the blu-ray set have to offer?

Yeah the new roar is pretty hard to believe. In fact, part of me still thinks it's a mistake, that they put a work-in-progress test file on there by accident or something. It's also strange how they don't mention that the roar was changed for 2004 and then again for 2010, which also puts some doubt in my mind as to what is actually going on. But this is just typical Star Wars fan denial. A lot of the SE is hard-to-believe levels of badness, from the editing and CG changes to the colouring to the picture resolution to the sound mix, so this is pretty typical I suppose.

Actually, I've been developing a lot of schaudenfreude towards the SE. I hope they continue to fuck things up so that more people will see how better things were in the first place. Let's put Jar Jar in A New Hope and redo Yoda in CG flipping around!

These tiedostot images are from 2007.  and are not the UK Sky channel recording but the German broadcast.  (see scroll3 and 4)  The colors are more or less the 2004 dvds; for instance the criticism of Hoth looking blue.  (13192)

Any chance of there being 'All' the language versions created?  or do companies still put out blu-rays for each of the zones?

Gary Kurtz (Producer - STAR WARS and THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK): Gary revealed that he has not been involved at all on anything to do with the upcoming STAR WARS films on Blu-ray, though on the extras front, as far as he is aware, apart from the deleted scenes, the additional material will pretty much be all the documentaries and supplemental features found on previous releases in other formats.

*grain of salt* someone not involved saying what's to be included might not add up to much.  But he's possibly been able to talk to those who are putting it together.  wait and see we will.

I think it's become far more common with Blu-Rays to make one version for all regions.  I have no idea if this will hold true for the Star Wars BRs or not, though.

Well that's actually good news. To see the Biggs scenes in "normal" quality is for me a reason to buy it.
