One-eyed monster in the garbage room? Elaborate backstory.

How elaborate are we talking, here? I mean, a monster inside a space-station? I assumed that was not...normal?

He's actually the exiled prince of his people, sworn for revenge on the Empire. It is he who removed the ray-shielding on the exhaust port, and he escapes with Tarkin's butler on a stolen TIE fighter.

not true, but would make a good EU novel.

I suppose it is a sad commentary on the EU that you actually fooled me.

Empire's End?

I have lost some respect for you, ken.

(And this coming from a Dark Empire apologist)

I liked Splinter of the Mind's Eye, The Zahn trilogy was OK, loved Shadows of the Empire on N64, Jedi Knight 2 on PC. Actually I even quite enjoyed the Phantom Menace game on PlayStation!

Despite being a Star Wars fan and an avid reader as a child (still a fan, not much of a reader anymore), I never felt that reading and Star Wars went together well. Star Wars began as an audio/visual universe and that is obviously how it works best.

I really liked Genndy's Clone Wars and the newer Clone Wars series is OK at times but I can take it or leave it.

And at the risk of getting flamed by at least one previous poster: I'm glad the EU re-appropriated Boba Fett and made him badass again after his lame inclusion and death in Jedi.

From the opinions here and the Amazon reviews, it's not something I'll rush out and get.  I might just get it and toss it in my luggage.  I always have a paperback or two in my carry-on for the several flights I make a year.  Something I don't mind getting banged up from the abuses of traveling. This might be good for that.  If I don't dig it, I'll donate it.

I used to like the EU when it first started with the Timothy Zahn novels, jedi academy, black fleet crisis, x-wing rogue squadron, tales from the mos eisley cantina, tales of the bounty hunters.  And then there was the comics. I collected Dark empire I and II along with tales of the jedi series.

Dark Empire I and II was cool.

Since they're like poetry, what with the rhyming and all, I find that I only need to watch three out of the six films.

Favorite things about the EU.  That there is star wars beyond return of the jedi, my favorite characters from  the oot films are represented, it moved the story beyond ROTJ and not backwards.

That Luke actually becomes a Jedi master and grows as a man, and a character.

That people actually die and get old.  That even if it is not talked  adults in the EU universe do have sex.

Jedi men can love women, and not go evil.

They deal with issues like death, politics and religion and are far less juvenile in content than the films, well sometimes.  Other times the EU books are just as bad if not worse, even giving Lucas some of his bad prequel ideas.

Until the Legacy era, anyway. For there on out it's just rehash, rehash, rehash.

I'm going to stop on the way home today and look for Tales From Mos Eisley.  If it's not at Borders, I'll just order it from Amazon.

Update;  I bought Death Star.  Won't start it until maybe later this year. If it isn't too bogged in prequelism, I'll be ok-ish. If not, I'll bail.

I had to order Tales From Mos Eisley.  I keep a small group of books & DVDs in our Amazon wish list for whenever we need to spend a few bucks to push an order over to free shipping.  I had Tales in there.

A couple of days ago my wife called me at work.  She needed to spend a few dollars more on an order so she asked me what I had in the wish list.  Her work machine didn't have the list saved.

I told her the title and she looked it up while I was on the phone so she could verify it was the right book.  When she saw it, here is her reply, verbatim; "Is it the mass market paperback with a bald guy shining a big flashlight on E.T, and a green armadillo is standing next to him?"

Star Wars looks totally different to non-nerds.  ;-)
