Warbler has watched The Exorcist(was: Should Warbler watch The Exorcist?)

When I was younger, I never thought I'd consider watching The Exorcist.   When I was a kid, I had some preconceived notions, that modern horror movies(1970's to present) were nothing but junk gore-fests.   Consequentially, I've watch very few modern horror movies.  But recently, I've heard The Exorcist called a classic.   So, I am thinking about watching it.   But I've also heard this movie referred to as the scariest movie ever made.   I've heard that this movie made people throw up, and/or run out of the movie theater.  I do not wish to watch a movie that will leave me mentally disturbed. So, I need advise.   Is it a good movie worth watching?    Is it too disturbing?  Will it make it impossible for me to sleep at night after seeing it?  Will it make me wantt to run away in horror and disgust?   Will it make me puke?  Will it entertain me?  Please tell me what you think without revealing too much of the plot and ending.    If I do watch it,  I promise to post a review of it here.

...well I've heard of people that were never the same after watching "The Room"...

oh, also I've heard "The Exorcist" is shit-your-pants scary. Makes me wanna see it, just to see if it lives up to my expectations.

... And they had 'The Empire Strikes Back', the fifth of the four Star Wars films. He is fucking with us numerically, isn't he! "Children, count up to ten." "Four, five, six, one, two, three, ten". No, it goes, four, five, six, one, two, three… No, it goes: four, five, six. One... Two and three have not been made." "Two and three have not been made! What should they be?" "What should they be? We do not know. All we know is that there will be a big floppy character in it that goes, squawk squawk squawk... who needs a punch up the bracket!"

I've just heard that the movie is very disturbing, disturbing enough that people ran out of the theaters in fear and perhaps puked.

I don't like scary movies at all.

I loved The Exorcist.

Not sure what that means, but I think you should definitely give it a shot. It's one of those movies that I'm sure would have messed you up had you seen it as a kid in the 70's. However, for an adult in the 00's, its kind of funny. ;-)

I saw it recently and didn't care too much for it at all. It was just kind of dull.

Now "The Omen", now THERE'S a good scary movie.

It most certainly is. Be careful though, it could change your life in more ways than you can imagine.

Nobody said anything about it being scary. Although it IS scaringly stupid.

You really do FEAR for your sanity while you watch it.

Warb -

The Exorcist is a good movie, but in my opinion, it's not as scary as it's been made out to be.  That or I'm just desensitized.

Howerver, do not watch the "Version You've Never Seen" cut.  Watch the theatrical cut.  The scenes added for the VYNS cut are simply unnecessary and drag the film to a halt.  The theatrical cut is much more effective.

RE: Should Warbler watch The Exorcist?

Wasn't the "spider walk" scene added or extended? that scene is very cool.

It was added for the new version, but cool though it may be, it's pointless and adds nothing.

Plus the other additions drag the story down so much that it's not worth it just to see the "spider walk" scene.

Save the new version for after you've seen the theatrical cut.

well as least the powers that be had the courtesy to put both versions on the blu-ray, unlike some arrogant movie makers.

Depends on which version you buy, I first bought the single disc version at Wal-mart and found out it was the long version only, so I returned it and got the digi-book version from Best Buy which has both cuts on separate BD's, this version is much better and only $5 more.
