Its open-matte, I believe, so you could easily crop it to OAR (assuming the effects shots are open-matte, too).

I have both versions (open matte and D-Theater), I believe it's better to use the D-Theater.

Open matte is OK, but it's like an IMAX version of the film. For fans only.

I may have missed this in the frenzy, but do you guys still need the LD for audio? I might have a lead on getting that disc for very, very cheap so I need to know

The open HDTV looks worse, we made the right choice

Yeah judging by only that one screen, the HDTV does look slightly worse, but maybe the HDTV version is free of the smearing the D-theater version has?

I'd love to do a separate project with that HDTV version if somebody could get their hands on it. Mainly because I'd love to see the movie without black borders!

Oh do not get me wrong, I am far from saying the D is like a top tier Sony 4k remaster, but it is better......... slightly

If this rip is anything like the 720p one I have (DVHS source) it will do very nicely.  It's better than nothing or the DVD.  In motion, even on a 10 foot screen, it's very filmic.

Just to show that yes the special effects were done  before they matted it. Look at the missile on the bottom

Thanks to  dark_jedi for the open matte pic.

Yes as of right now we do not have the ripped audio from the LD, how cheap is cheap lol.

I have a guy that gets me all my bit perfect rips but he always asks to keep the LD when it is done.

about 2.50$ though i need to see how much for shipping--

The d-theater one looks like it has a bit more detail.

Why are we doing detail comparisons on an "HDTVRip 1080p"? The original file is a 15GB 1080i.

That means absolutely nothing. If the original file has less detail and more smearing than say a 10GB file that had no smearing and more detail, would you use the bigger file because it was "bigger"? It really depends on the source and how good it is, than just how big the file is.

I have no idea on the size of the files, but that d-theater one looks better to my eyes as I can see more detail, that's all I was sayin'. :-)

The choice for the source has already been made and the work has commenced.  I believe the rest is just friendly discussion.

Even if it's open matte it could always be matted. So OAR doesn't really matter just as long as we get an even better copy of the movie.

Although i really have no problems with the open matte.

Now the question is who is going to record this baby?

Damn, I had HDNet Movies for years before Mark Cuban started a war with every cable company on the planet... and they show such great movies.  Time After Time and The Poseidon Adventure are on in June also.
