The future of Lucasfilm

Have you ever thought about what happens to LFL after Lucas passes away? I mean, they haven't made pretty much any movies since the 80s if you don't count IJ4, and it just stands mainly because of SW movies. Would there be any new possible CEO after Lucas? Could it be possible that LFL will eventually go bankrupt (I mean after a few decades) and maybe Fox can buy the rights of SW back?

And in the time of greatest despair, there shall come a savior, and he shall be known as the Son of the Suns.

Well that's pretty far in the future to speculate but I could see Katie Lucas possibly taking over. As for their income, you forget they make a lot of money through ILM and Skywalker Sound.

And LucasArts, Lucasfilm Animation, etc...

Licensing of things will keep the company afloat, especially star wars.

It would be interesting to see Katie Lucas as the director of a star wars film, as long as it had a good script.

I'm not so sure how much ILM and Skywalker Sound have to with Lucasfilm as far as if one went under the other would survive,

But hasn't Lucas said that no more films will be made after his death? I can't imagine Lucasfilm won't continue with cartoons, tv shows, novels and comics ie the expanded universe. And I can't imagine Lucas caring that this continues after his passing, just like he doesn't have a problem with it now.

All that ancillary stuff is fodder for more merchandise. From what I understand The Lego Star Wars range is predominately Clone Wars orientated and is doing quite well. Who needs films to sell toys?

Well, even the most HC fans and Lucas lovers may be put off by any new stuff because it's not GL canon or something...

With all due respect since when was *insert random clone wars novel title here* GL canon. That stuff still sells.

If GL were to die in the near future, Howard Roffman is your interrum CEO.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Howard_Roffman

He's been there since the beginning, has worked up the system understands how to keep it going.  But he's not a creative output person.  People might transfer GL's creativity into his kids, but beyond Katie's writing there are few signs of the kids keeping the LFL alive.  I would guess it massively shrink and like some of his other funds, the name could be used to endorse up and coming film creators.  This way the LFL earned moneys go back into the continuation of film making.

Never, but I was talking about TCW cartoon for example, which is like the only product of Lucas Animation (?).

Wasn't one of Lucas's daughters fighting in MMA? I want her to take over the company.

After Lucas passes away?!  They aren't doing anything worth while now!  What's the difference!?

The difference is that then at least Lucas isn't in the way to get the originals.

Lucas dies. World mourns. Consumer and liscensee confidence in the "SW" brand drops.

The OOT is released in a pristine restored BluRay condition. Rereleased to theaters. Sells millions, revitalizing company.

He'll probably want the original negatives buried with him.  100 years later when his great grandkids - in an effort to restore the company - dig him up and open the casket to get the original negatives, his mummified bones will still be tightly clutching the cannisters. :)

So they can do what?

Understand the pipe dream senerio, but add in a bit of reality. I'll start:

Agree with the first two, but the third is hogwash. People still like Disney shit even though Walt is gone and Roy's consistently questioned.

Agree the OOT will be released. We'll be past BluRay at that point. Might not be theaters then. Earn biagillion space bucks sure. but not sure what a revitalized company will bring about.

Would rather Lucas before death appreciate the public sphere's ability to preserve his work and he offers them into the Public Domain.

Ok back to the looonie bin I go. and that has nothing to do with the topic.

Lucasfilm could be seen as setting up Filoni (content), Woods (Skywalker Sound), Knoll (ILM), Roffman (stays as marketing) as SWs future overlords.

*EDIT*

or Pixar will purchase LFL.  They've got the content people which LFL at the moment seems to be lacking.

As much as some of us would like to believe that there's that much demand for the OOT, it ain't so. It's something that fans and film enthusiasts really want, but the casual viewer doesn't really care about which version they're watching. The whole reason why it's taken this long to get Lucas to produce a decent transfer of it is because the demand isn't high enough that he thinks it's worth investing in. I'm sure it will happen eventually, but it's going to be a niche product, and doing it for historical preservation will have to be the motivation to do it moreso than consumer demand.

Sometimes (one example being the Lawrence Of Arabia restoration) a niche product generates it's own demand.

I remember seeing that in the theater where even with the rough edges caused by the age difference of some of the actors re-dubbing the restored footage it was universally well received and then being first in the queue to buy the VHS of it which sold out at my local HMV branch very quickly.

It was also one of the first DVDs I purchased and it was a handsome set with some nice extras and I paid a premium price in the day to get it on my shelf as soon as I could.

By now any Star Wars release is going to be to some extent a niche product as almost anyone who has an interest in seeing the 2004 version of the  film would have seen it many times and been purchased many times and it's no stranger to broadcast television even in HD.

The OOT is  a niche thing only compared to a handful of other huge titles. Not compared to the vast majority of movies that still warrant a release every week. Studios would murder their grandmas to have that level of sales for the other catalog titles, especially now. Besides being the right thing to do, it cannot lose money.

I could easily see this as Lucas's  future. His past even.  This looks  10  times better than any  of the PT films.  I highly doubt the lucas  of today has the talent to do any of these.

I don't believe that.  Even if it is true, it is only because Lucas has successful made it so, at least in the short term.  All he'd have to do is hype the "original theatrical restoration" the same way that he did the SEs, and he'd make even more of a mint. I just cannot believe that SW is the only movie in the world for which most people don't want the original version.
