Where am I????Now that Dark Jedi is back among us doing more Star Wars projects, I have been looking back at previous work that he has been involved with. Unfortunately, there has been no single thread with each project having one all of its own. Hence here is a mega-thread listing all current and previous projects with all known links to those threads.
For those not around in 2005 and 2006, Dark Jedi was a very prolific preservationist capturing most if not all different US NTSC Laserdiscs, the Japanese Special Collection as well as a couple of Pan & Scan US NTSC VHS tapes. The full list is below.

aka PancakesIf anyone has DarkJedi's ESB Standard Play and ROTJ "First Issues" discs, could you send me a PM and work out a trade or something? Those are the LDs that have the original theatrical mixes of each of those films (at least, as far as I can tell) and they're not time-compressed like the ANH/ESB Extended Play discs are (the "First Issue" discs of those).

That is why I thought I would take this chance to re-introduce everyone to your work and get all the threads/projects listed in one place.

I realised as part of hacking together this mega-thread that the main web-site resource I used to help out with sourcing the Dark Jedi preservations - davisdvd.com - shut down over 3 years ago. However, using the magic of Google and a site called web.archive.org I found it again and the links are below
http://web.archive.org/web/20060206031246/www.davisdvd.com/misc/ep4.htm
http://web.archive.org/web/20050924185548/www.davisdvd.com/misc/ep5.htm
http://web.archive.org/web/20050924185726/www.davisdvd.com/misc/ep6.htm
So, to answer ChainsawAsh, both the Ep4 and 5 Standard play laserdiscs were the first laserdisc releases that were not time compressed and also the last release which had the original theatrical soundtracks prior to the 1985 DigitalSound re-mastering.
From what I can make out, the Ep6 audio on the First Issue is the same as that used right up to the remastering for the Definitive Collection ie, the First Issue, the Special Widescreen Edition, the Japanese Special Collection and 1992 Pan and Scan

aka PancakesThat's what I thought.
I'm not even sure if ROTJ was remixed in 1985 (or 1993 for that matter), and I can't seem to get a straight answer on it. My assumption would be that there is a 1983 (theatrical) mix and a 1993 (Def. Coll./"Faces") mix, but no 1985 remix.
Then again, it could be that the 1983 (theatrical) mix was never released on home video, and the only ones we have access to are the 1985 and 1993 mixes of Jedi.
Sadly, no one really seems to know.

that's the AC3 track from dark_jedi's CAV ESB preservation (1425-84) Standard Play.
Believed to be the same Dolby Surround mix heard in cinemas.
Dark, I have a question about this one.
(I know it was a long time ago, but this question doesn't require too much memory ;)
Is this set from your personal collection, or did you borrow the LD from somebody?
If yours, and if you still have it, will you please tell where were the discs were pressed?
I'm guessin' the cover probably says "Printed in USA" but what about the discs themselves?
Do disc labels say "Manufactured in USA" or "Manufactured in Japan" or something else?
Thanks
However, in practice you must take into account the "fuckwit factor". Just talk to Darth Mallwalker...

aka PancakesThank you much, Darth Mallwalker - downloading right now! Still wish there was an uncompressed WAV of this (and the 1985 ESB) floating around ...
And I still can't figure out if there was a 1985 remix of ROTJ, or if the 1983 theatrical mix was ever released on LD/VHS ...

I think this one will remain a mystery. My best guess is that as ROTJ was made with Digital Sound and the first release on Laserdisc has Digital Sound so I think they may be the same. By the time that ROTJ came out ANH and ESB had already had the 85 Digital Sound treatment.
I would also guess that those theatres that were THX capable in 1983 had a different mix to the one that more basic theatres had but that basic mix is what the Laserdisc got.

Where am I????I woke up today and decided that it was "Update an old post and bump an old topic for an old pal day"
Consequently, I have updated Post 1 which is a subtle reminder about what DJ has done over the years. Much of what we now take for granted around here has had DJ somewhere in the middle doing a lot of hard work.
Should he ever come back here, I welcome him. He will also be a better man than me as I would not be back!!
If he does not come back then all those over many years who have done what they have done to trigger the events of the last few weeks have finally won.
Congratulations.
Well done.
Your work here is done.........
