I am ready for the trials! Some of the dollar stores here still have TPM stuff they can't give away.
Somewhere there must be a landfill to rival that one full of Atari 2600 E.T. cartridges!
Would Jar Jar Binks bandages still be good to use now?

I like TPM. Is it a good movie? No, but it's entertaining. I watch it the same way I would watch the original TMNT movie: with no purpose other than nostalgic entertainment.
You are too young for nostalgia.

Jedi KnightThe phantom menace was George Lucas. He decides some time in the early nineties to go back and re-invent star wars with the bad special editions and a newly written prequel story that had very little to do with anything written prior to then.

I am ready for the trials! The main problem is that TPM is a surrealist film disguised as a mainstream blockbuster film.
Sounding like a broken record since May 2006.

I am ready for the trials! No really. I think TPM is a surrealist film in the vein as Luis Bunel. But the problem is that in a science fiction movie, you need exposition to what is going on and how that universe works in order for the film to succeed. TPM does not explain and is governed by no logic- hence a surrealist film.

In that The Beginning documentary.
My favorite part.

"He no nuts, he's crazy!"I've had a much different experience with The Phantom Menace than most of you guys here, I was like 5 when the film came out, so I grew up with it. I honestly don't have much to say about it, because most of it has already been said, but I will say it is probably the best looking of the prequels, probably because of the use of real sets. Also, maybe I'm just crazy, but the Battle Droids for some reason look better and more life like than the more recent prequels, at least to me. Then again, I'm relying mostly on memory for this stuff, I haven't seen the film in years...

My biggest problem with TPM (besides the obvious objections mentioned above), is that the characters were impossible to relate to. "Star Wars" gave us dialogue by Luke and Han in a way that we would say..if not the exact words. CONTRACTIONS! People on Earth use them constantly.
If SNL or The Simpsons made a parody in 1998 about the most commercial, watered down, kid friendly character to eventually curse the Star Wars universe...I'm pretty sure it still wouldn't come close to Jar Jar. My hatred for him is still as alive as it was ten plus years ago. Can you imagine if his "character" was say..a renegade wookie...or any other species. Or simpley the way he looked now, but acted differently...and didn't have a voice like the SHMOO from NBC Saturday morning cartoons of the early 80s? Terrible.

I always thought this was on purpose. To show how the Republic got corrupt by having those in charge being relatively stoic and unable to relate to the problems right in front of them. Much like how people react to real world politicians. They are often seen as saying one thing to get in power then doing another. Where I think the PT lacked is there's no sense of the 'General Public'. Everything is warrior/army/police types up against politicos. There's no common man represented. But having this dynamic between the PT and OT builds the story. Until the reveal in ESB... Then it's mythic family strife and looses me somewhat.
Jar Jar. My hatred for him is still as alive as it was ten plus years ago.
My take on Jar-Jar is George gave up on him. Maybe the backlash hit so hard/irrelevant and kids did like him that GL couldn't make the sacrifice, he felt some need to either keep Ahmed Best periodically employed or he saw the characters as the connective piece into other mediums. But swap the Youngling killings and Jar-Jar, toss in Jar-Jar having spent so much time in the senate around Palpatine that he figures out the Sith connection, and you've got a Jar-Jar story arc.

If you use one of the foreign language versions for Jar-Jar, it'll make the subtitles easier to read. I'm hearing / reading different englishes, mind can't focus on either, easily.

First time I've heard someone mention that, actually. It just means you can watch the edit more than once and get more out of it ;-)

Chief Architect of Cynical MoralityI'll admit, I saw TPM 5 times in theaters. I was young, and it was Star Wars that I didn't have memorized.
I remember almost cheering the first time I saw it when Qui-Gon said "The ability to speak does not make you intelligent." I was hoping everyone was going to be exasperated with him, however, that didn't last long.

The shame is that should have been a perfect line to shut Jar Jar down for the rest of the movie. Instead he just got worse.

Tauntaun herder-Damn Fool Idealistic CrusaderThe thing is, in parts TPM can still feel like an adventure movie, which cannot be said for II and III.
Then again, there was a fight between Anakin and baby Greedo.

Ointment FlyBack to the Jar Jar subtitles, there are fanedits out there that do subtitles to try and make him a more serious or likable character...with mixed results IIRC. One of the problems is coming up with replacement dialogue that doesn't sound obvious - foreign language tracks and reversed tracks don't sound good IMO.

Magister Pontifex MaximusThe big problem with all redubs are the other elements in the soundmix.
The music, the sound effects, that sort of thing.
If George won't release the OOT to the public I doubt if he would release every single sound element.
It would be a the second coolest thing he ever did if he released a series of archives of Star Wars disassembled so you could put the whole saga back together your own way (like a grown up version of the soundboards on SW.com).
It would be a great way of teaching people about editing and composing a shot from disparate elements.

This is very true. There is a ton of dialogue echo in the R-L and rear R-L channels. It's a pain in the ass to work with.

Sure it probably was on purpose. It's too bad the trilogy is 6 effing hours long, which is a long way to go for that fairly bland academic idea. It's a good example of how Lucas, starting around the time of Young Indiana Jones, became the TAKE YOUR MEDICINE director.

On the plus side, it won't last, its just the way things are now. In 30 years from now, Lucas will be dead, there will be much less Star Wars stuff, and the original versions will be available in high-def. People will look back on the OT as classics and everything since then as not-classics. It's the same thing with Star Trek: TOS is considered more of a classic now than ever (it was derided as silly in the 70s and 80s and 90s), despite forgettable stuff like Voyager and Enterprise and spoofs like Galaxy Quest. No one remembers the crappy spin-offs, except as a footnote to the classic original. King Kong had a sequel; so did Wizard of Oz; French Connection did too; Breathless was remade with Richard Gere. Etc. At the time, it cheapens the original, but after a while people don't pay attention. Rocky is still a classic even though Rocky V exists.
This is very interesting. But here's something to be considered- none of the sequels to those films were popular- much less top grossing films. With the exception of the Rocky flicks, they were mostly over looked and forgotten within a decade. This isn't the case with the Star Wars prequels which still have a very strong following. I'm really afraid Star Wars will be "kiddie movies" for the rest of time.
I realize I'm one of the most ignored people on the boards, but I'd like to hear someones opinion on this. Anyone agree? Disagree?
