Out of curiosity, what did you change Watto's subs to so Anakin joins up with the group?

I did something similar, and found that it actually added a dynamic to the scene, rather than cheapened it.

For anyone interested, the first part is now available. More information is up at fanedit.org.

grabbed the dvd version off usenet. i gotta say i think this is the best fan edit of Phantom Menace i've seen and the most enjoyable viewing i've ever had of it.. i mean since you just cut the crap and junk out of it nothing was jarring about the edit. it felt very natural. it's amazing how much unnecessary crap was in that movie. nicely done!

though i wish R2 was repainted or perhaps removed when he's tagging along with the characters

it's a keeper. i eagerly await the other two

I'm happy you enjoyed it. Thanks! I did try repainting R2, but I'm not skilled in color correcting or rotoscoping and the result wasn't very good. If someone can give me a crash course I'm happy to tweak the films some more.

Oh, and if you have an account at FE.org, please rate the edit. And, if you have a few minutes, post a quick review. It will help others decide whether or not to give it a chance.

I agree that R2 should be recolored if possible. Otherwise, it just looks too much like R2-D2. I mean, I'm pretty sure we don't see any other blue, dome-topped astromechs throughout the entire saga. I'll also say, however, that I personally don't see any problem with it actually being R2. It's C-3PO's backstory as one of Anakin's childhood projects that bothers me most, so I'm satisfied so long as that's taken care of.

So I did some experimenting today and, unfortunately, I can't pull off recoloring R2 with regular color correction. It would take creating an R2 mask, repainting, etc., all far more complex than I can do. Maybe after I'm done with the initial release I can take some time to try and learn AE and pull this off. But for now, sadly, R2 will remain blue.

I haven't seen your edit yet. (I plan to soon!) But you can probably color-correct R2 by making a simple mask and doing a hue/saturation effect. Just grab the blue channel and move it to red or something. I'm not sure what editing software you use, but lots of programs can do that.

Took me awhile to figure that out, but it revolutionized my editing.

I edit in Final Cut Pro 7. With his moving and whatnot I don't think a mask will work easily in this software. I'm pretty much done with the edits (still need to built the discs for 2 and 3) but since I have some time I will see if I can learn track mattes well enough in AE to pull this off.

In AE, you could do a secondary color correction and select the R2 blue and shift it to yellow, green, red or whatever and put a very rough mask around him just to avoid selection of surrounding objects and then parent the mask to a tracking null of R2.

I'll try to find some time this weekend to experiment. Thanks for the suggestion!

I was also wondering what subtitles he and you added to get Anakin to meet up with them.

Im doing the same and had the same idea. I was considering having him tell Anakin to keep an eye on them or to maybe keep them from going to another store or possibly warning them about the upcoming storm.

RE: The Fall of the Jedi Trilogy

I believe my exact lines were "Keep an eye on them. I have debts to pay." It plays into the dynamics, and makes Anakin seem less innocent. I'm excited to see an actually well done edit that does this (mine was passing at best) - I'll be viewing it tonight.

Just call me NSP 8)

RE: The Fall of the Jedi Trilogy

I spent six hours last night trying to get R2 re-colored in AE. Unfortunately I won't be able to do it with my limited skill. 75% of the shots through the films are probably fairly easy to fix, but its the other 25% that will pose a big issue for me. An example would be the very first shot of R2 in my version: he appears on the hull of the ship to help with repairs. The amount of movement, as well as the blue planet of Naboo behind him, is causing massive problems. The AE tracker loses tracking points, plus R2 rotates causing the matte to change.

While I would love to be able to change R2's color I can't do it at this time. If there is someone more skilled in AE that would like to take a stab at it PM me and I can provide a sample clip to see if you can do it. If you can perhaps we can work together to recolor R2.

So, for the time being at least, the edits will be released as-is with a blue Astromech Droid.

RE: The Fall of the Jedi Trilogy

I figured out After Effects Roto Brush which is pretty damn cool. Unfortunately, in the scene described above R2 has a bluish tint all around so trying to change his color at all affects him entirely. Looks terrible.

It might work if I use the secondary color correction tools in Speedgrade and export the look file and apply it in AE.  I'll just grab a freeze frame from the AVI version and try it...  (btw, when tracking footage you can have it track frame by frame and make adjustments if needed to keep it tracked.  Also making the track point bigger helps, but also slow down tracking time.)

EDIT:  Well, fixing R2 in space is pretty much impossible, but maybe it's not needed.  If he's just any other droid, does he have to be recolored in every scene?  So maybe with preplanning you could only recolor him in areas that work, make sense story wise, and don't cause continuity errors within the film.

Yes, because any blue droid is automatically assumed to be R2.

I have seen your cut and I must say that I really enjoyed to watch it. You cut all what was unnecessary and the movie is no more boring.

It's a great job and I would like to make a french version of your cut. I have demux your ac3 file and I will try to change the english voices, with the french. I will too make a new french crawl. I'll contact you when I am done with all that.

Can't wait to watch the others episodes...

I'm happy you enjoyed it. Thank you! If you're a member of FE.org please consider popping over their to rate the edit. And if you have an extra couple of minutes write up a quick review. It will help others decide whether or not to give it a chance.

Once you have the AC3 edited feel free to PM me. I can add it as a secondary track to what I already have and re-up the edits if you like. Or, if you want to do it yourself that's fine, as long as it stays a "Q2 Fanedit". Obviously you can give yourself credit for the french audio editing.

Thanks again!

If anyone was put off by the limited availability for downloaded, I added the 720p xVid to MediaFire. See .info for the DLC.

I'll double check in a little bit.

RE: The Fall of the Jedi Trilogy

Just checked on MF and the account is active and all files accounted for. Loaded up the DLC in jDownloader and it starts fine. Have you tried updating jDownloader? Sometimes an outdated version can cause problems. If you haven't forced an update lately, click the Check for New Updates button in the toolbar and see if that helps.

haha that very well might be it! I frequently ignore the update pop-up =P

EDIT: Yep, that was it--thanks.
