RE: The Abyss

Apparently there's a blu-ray release planned for next year, but googling around for this HDTV version, I found some screenshots and they look like very filtered DVD-upscales.

EDIT: Seems the google link didn't come out right for some reason. Go to image size on that google search and set it to "exactly" 1280x576. That'll give you the screenshots.

RE: The Abyss

If you're in a PAL territory, the DVD release was an NTSC-PAL conversion - just adding insult to injury!

I'm a big fan of this film, it having made a big impression on me when I saw it theatrically - the director's cut just made it an even more satisfying experience.

I really hope the BD release turns up before long. It's sad to see this superior Cameron neglected while the more recent bloated efforts get all the attention (do I need to mention titles?) See also: True Lies.

There's a 720p version on tehparadox, unfortunately looks to have hard-coded Japanese subtitles.

RE: The Abyss

You know, it would be interesting to see what would come out if using mine and DJ's blu v2 script (or well, a modified version) on the NTSC version of the DVD.

Though if the blu-ray release next year would look good, there's no need of course.

And I agree with Jonno, it's a really good movie! I saw it the first time maybe 7 or 8 years ago, and I didn't know anything about it, other than the fact it was made by James Cameron.

RE: The Abyss

Ok, I managed to "find" the NTSC version. :)

I threw the blu V2 script on it, and I'll show you some comparisons here.

Pic 1: Just cropping and bicubic resize without filtering. (Same method used to resize pics in photoshop)

Pic 2: Upscaling, sharpening on grain level, motion-adaptive deinterlacing/antialiasing and some more.

1-1 1-2

2-1 2-2

3-1 3-2

4-1 4-2

5-1 5-2

So this is basically what we'll be able to do in case next year's blu-ray release would be bad.

RE: The Abyss

Ok, now I did a comparison with one of those HDTV screenshots. It actually proved me wrong about it being upscaled, since it obviously has more resolution in it, and is less cropped on the bottom. (Though it's more cropped on the top, left and right sides.) It also has a different color timing.

RE: The Abyss

According to The Digital Bits, an official BD of The Abyss is in the works and may be available next year.

If you're not in a major rush, you may want to just wait for that release.

RE: The Abyss

gathered it's the same LD transfer. at least i don't get resolution loss from zooming in manually on my TV

the dts sounded much better though. shame the 6.1 was matrixed instead of descrete

RE: The Abyss

That's a great improvement indeed.

I don't know why I thought it was a DVD upscale... haha

Can't wait for the blu-ray release. :)

I don't think DVD even supports discrete 6.1 but I could be wrong.

It does, several DVD's were released with DTS-ES 6.1 discrete audio, Se7en is one that comes to mind. But I really don't see the need for a 6.1 configuration when a 5.1 configuration makes the original six-track mix justice.

Long time since I watched this movie, IMO it's one of his weaker films but it's very ambitious and technically extremely well made, great performances from Biehn and the always great Ed Harris.

The NTSC DVD is supposed to be more detailed than the PAL release, is the HD version the '89 original or the '93 Special Edition?

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

RE: The Abyss

I've always enjoyed this movie because of it's ambition and story.  The only version I have in my possession is the 1993 Widescreen Extended Version on LD....the discs being made in Japan for the U.S..  It's got the AC-3 Audio.  The cool thing about this version...it has the "Making Of" feature on it.

Long Live Laserdisc....  :)

RE: The Abyss

OK I have an absolutely DIFFERENT question.

Does anybody here have the 4:3 TV broadcast or VHS ? I remember seeing it on TV many times but never recording it. It has much more information on the top and the bottom of the picture, since it was shown on Super 35
