The Essentials (films) — Page 3

Carrie is quite a good film, although it is too short and the soundtrack is, in some parts of the film, ridiculously dated.

It features one of my favorite "one take" scene (the other being a particular scene in "Rope"), which starts by the prom queen ballot being picked up at Carrie's table, goes all the way through the party, the ballots being switched, shows Travolta and that girl hiding under the stage, goes all the way to the other girl hiding behind the stage, goes aaaall the way up, shows the bucket filled with blood from the top view, showing the stage below and the bucket both on focus, then zooms in at Carrie's table... All in one take, with no computers or steadycam or anything.

In terms of good "scary" films.which create an atmosphere of fear with a good mystery, as opposed to relying simply on dead things jumping out of dark spaces:

The Sixth Sense
Stir of Echoes
Ringu (The Japanese version blows the US version out of the water.)
The Changeling (My personal favorite.)

MeBeJedi: Sadly, I believe the prequels are beyond repair.
JediRandy: They’re certainly beyond any repair you’re capable of making.

MeBeJedi: You aren’t one of us.
Go-Mer-Tonic: I can’t say I find that very disappointing.

JediRandy: I won’t suck as much as a fan edit.

Well, it had better because the American version was the most unscary scary movie I've seen in recent years.

Dumbest... movie... ever.

And it definitely does not deserve a sequel.

Great scary films...

The Exorcist - still the best
Jaws - 'nuff said
Stigmata - surprisingly good
The Sixth Sense - but you cannot really watch it multiple times which kinda sucks
Spice World - just plain scary

Both the american and the japanese versions are a waste of time.

So bad you had to say it twice, eh?

"Well, it had better because the American version was the most unscary scary movie I've seen in recent years. Dumbest... movie... ever."

Believe me, when (if) you see it, you will see how much non-sensical fluff was added to the American version. It has a much stronger ending as well - a better "What would you do in this situation?" ending.

TCM? I'm with stupid. What does that stand for?

I assume he means Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

ah. Never saw that one either. Too gory for my tastes.

Has Dr. Strangelove already been said?

I'm just glad he didn't mean TPM.

In a way yes, I mentioned as essential every Kubrick movie from Paths of Glory to Eyes Wide Shut (basically, every one except the early ones).

I would submit The Ring/ Ringu (whichever version you prefer) as an essential.

Meh, neither one of them were all that great IMO(the Japanese version being the better of the two of course).

Another essential: Fight Club.

Fight Club? somehow this just does not seem essential(imho) .

I suppose you are one of the half of the people who watched it and didn't get it. To me, it's more than essential.

Another essential movie: Midnight Cowboy. One of my favorites movies, featuring Dustin Hoffman's and Jon Voigh's best performances, in my opinion.

Did anyone mention the Lord of the Rings films?

Episode II: Shroud of the Dark Side

Emperor Jar-Jar

I'm not sure, but they definitely belong on this list.

As should The Bridge On The River Kwai
