The 2011 OT.com Fantasy Baseball League - Han Homered First

Hooray, it's time for baseball again!  And so we start the second annual OT.com Fantasy Baseball League.

This year I will not be pushing hard to fill up the league.  For now, I'm going to assume that the league will consist of the five teams from last year that kept up with things through the year:

Anchorhead - Confirmed
Ripplin - Confirmed
Sluggo - Confirmed
TV's Frink - Confirmed
Warbler - Confirmed

If you other guys are game, and we don't add anyone else, I suggest we do an AL- or NL-only league.  Five teams in an -only league is roughly equivalent to a 10 team mixed league, which is my preferred size.  We can have a vote on which league to play.

If anyone else out there wants to play, we're glad to have you, provided you are committed to keeping your team active the whole year.  I'm not asking that you make X number of trades or make moves every day, but I expect you to check in on your team at least every few days (or make your best effort to do so as much as possible).  What I want to avoid is what happened last year, when fully half the league stopped playing completely within a few months.

As far as the draft goes, the regular season starts on a Thursday this year for some reason (March 31).  So ideally we would draft the previous weekend.  Ripplin and I are in another league that drafts on Friday night, so I would prefer to draft either Saturday night March 26 or Sunday night March 27.  We could also draft the prior weekend if that works better.

Let me know if you guys plan to play this year.  I don't want to set up the league until we know if we are going AL-only, NL-only, or mixed.

You will not. None of us will, except for a very old and dying Ziggy Stardust who will watch it through teary eyes as he remembers us all.

I have a tough time threatening to crush all of you because the highlight of my 2010 season was when I climbed up to 7th place.

I really couldn't commit to a sport I don't understand, but I'm bummed that I don't like baseball. Can we do NFL this year, I understand what it's about.

WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT?

You were the one who convinced me to go with a reduced league size.  You can't drop out!  We aren't going to do this with just four teams.

I wouldn't have mentioned the Shizz league if I knew you would abandon this one.

Reconsider...before it's too late! ;-)

I'm game, but someone else needs to be commissioner for it.  I've got too much on my plate as is.

And it would be my third football league, Ripplin... :p

Man, it's so easy to get you riled up, apparently. I guess I'll do it. Haha. ;)

So...you gonna send an invite?

Actually I should check and see if I can change it after setting it up.  If so, I'll start the league and send the invite.

I'd still want to be able to choose from both leagues, but I dunno how others feel about it.

Not with only five teams.  Way too many good players available.

If everyone else disagrees with me, we could try it for one year and see how it goes I suppose.

RE: The 2011 OT.com Fantasy Baseball League

I just figure it doesn't matter how the teams are, because every player has ups and downs, each player has to deal with injuries, some turn into disappointments, some are pleasant surprises, etc... All-Star-laden team, mediocre team...if everyone has bascially the same sort of lineup, doesn't really matter. *shrug* I'd rather have more reliable players than a bunch of frustrating question marks.

RE: The 2011 OT.com Fantasy Baseball League

My opinion is that it devalues some of the skill involved - figuring out which free agents are useful and when to add/drop players.  If your team is made up of all superstars, there's little reason to worry about free agents.  Even injuries don't matter as much, because you can just pick up another really good player and not think as much about what you are doing.

My opinion is that the better everyone's team is, the less it is about skill and the more it is about luck.

Anyway, we've debated this before.  I want to hear the other guys opinions, and like I said we can try it your way if they want to give it a shot.
