See You, Space Cowboy...While I do know that the people mentioned in the first post are what prompted this, I think their names should be removed out of sensibility. Calling them out on it here isn't the time/place.

Ointment FlyThe names are there for the rough draft only - so that you guys would know what prompted this, as you said. As I get this further along, I'll remove the intro (including the names) and write a new one that is non-member specific.

14) Eh. It happens. I don't think it needs a rule. It's not even so bad. Projects are HARD.
21) Isn't this just a little nitpicky? So it inconvieniences a reader for the half-second it takes to scroll down.

Magister Pontifex MaximusMaybe 14 could be altered to something along the lines of not making project commencement announcement threads until there is a reasonable chance of the project reaching fruition?
That would allow for people to voice general idea interests in existing threads and for unavoidable abandonments (such as the project being officially released anyway or a change in circumstances).

Ointment FlyI haven't written the text for #14 yet. I'm thinking of people who just suddenly post "I've abandoned the project" with no explanation, or people who are habitual project abandoners (JediTray, anyone?). I wasn't referring to people who abandon a project in the right way, if you know what I mean.
#21 is nitpicky, sure. But it irritates me, and it's my list. :p

19) Posting Massive Images

21) Quoting Massive Walls of Text, Especially if You Just Say "I agree"
Great list TV's Frink. :)
I'm not fully onboard with number 16 however, as sometimes the ramblings can be entertaining, even if there's nothing remotely informative in them... ;) Things would get pretty dull if every comment ended up as just a short snappy soundbite or riposte, I reckon. People can just scroll down, at the end of the day.
Absolutely agree with numbers 19, 20, and 21 though, as they are COMPLETELY maddening to have to scroll down through again, if re-quoted by anyone! And overly-large pics should ideally just be given a 'clickable' link, if someone wants to show very large shots...and I can't understand why anyone can't just merely SAY that they 'agree with everything' in any long posts that may have just been posted beforehand by someone...rather than quoting the whole damn thing all over again, lol!
Also, maybe you could re-arrange the order of the final list a little to reflect the worst forum 'crimes'...as I reckon 'Spelling/Grammar' shouldn't be looked on too harshly, and certainly shouldn't be listed at the top. Especially when there's a few around here who don't have English as their first language...and to allow for those that seem to be on strong 'meds' half the time! ;)

Ointment Flyre: spelling and grammar - I plan to include something about ESL in the write-up - it's certainly not fair to pick on someone who isn't posting in their native language for that reason. But there has been a rash of poor English lately that has got me in a furry....oops, I mean fury. ;-)
The order of the list was random, basically as I thought of them. I don't know that I want to try and assign a "levels of hell" kind of thing.
I'll have to think about #16 some more. I tend to just skip over those wall texts anyway, so maybe they shouldn't bother me so much.
Thanks for the input. :-)

Han D. SoloIt's interesting, how most of the time you can tell if someone's bad spelling or grammar are caused by him being a non-native speaker or whether it is because he just can't spell or doesn't care. And also, my own spelling abilities aren't so great either, but that's why I use spell-check, (Firefox and Chrome both have it and I'm sure most of the other browsers do too) sure, it won't show stuff like Lucas is a lair (still funny) but it will fix stuff like double letters (one of my biggest problems - speak of the devil, I just typed bigest :-) ) and stuff like that.

My new peeve is this need to repeat what other people already said, mostly because no one bothered to read anything. Now you don't get videos anymore.

Magister Pontifex MaximusTo typo is to be human.
We all do it and should not be ashamed.
I try to correct them when I see them but to be honest if a post is understood without the need for clarification do we have to be spelling and grammar pedants on a discussion board?
As nerds we have more important things to be pedantic about like the number of stars on Spinda Carter's drawers.
Also one person's spelling mistake is another person's regional spelling variant.
I'm not going to type 'color' unless it's in a book or film title or I've made an unspotted typographical error.
Some people like to develop an idiom for themselves and while it may be annoying to some (and they have every right to voice that annoyance) as long as information of interest is being conveyed I can't see a problem with people staying 'in character' for the duration of their stay.

I'm not talking about an occasional typo or a regional variant. I'm talking about continual poor grammar, misspellings, excessive lol or txt speak, etc. Especially if it's a willing disregard, like a "scrw splling ppl nd to deal witit" attitude.
It may be unfair, but habitual mistakes of this nature often make people not take you seriously, no matter what you say.

Magister Pontifex MaximusPerhaps adding something along the lines of checking for evidence when making serious claims in a thread and when possible backing those claims with sources (it needn't be a wall of text just a link to an image, an exterior source or a previous post would be enough) and if not sure acknowledging as such in the post might be handy in guide such as this.
