That looks like my copy. I watched it a couple years ago, and didn't see any rot. Had to wash the Director's Cut DVD aftertaste out of my mouth. ;)

I can understand that. ;) Great to hear it's in good shape.

SilverWook said:

Should I record both sides in one go, or record them separately at maximum bitrates to allow someone else to work their mojo on it?

Capture the sides separately at maximum bitrates sounds like a dream come true! :) Is the audio in mono or stereo on this LD and do you know if there is any difference between the two tracks besides the analog/digital difference?

I'm really looking forward to how this will turn out, thank you so much for trying this out!!

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

It's mono, IIRC. There is likely no difference between the analog and digital tracks.

A dirty little secret of some later model LD players is the analog output was lowered a bit to make the digital sound better/louder. My old player (which does much better at ignoring rot and speckles) is analog only, but sounds great with a CX encoded track. Most of the titles I've captured off of it don't have digital tracks anyway. Hope this isn't a problem?

Yeah, of course it's a mono track, don't know what I was thinking. ;) It is also a damn good mono track, far ahead of its time.

Interesting story, what a cheap way to make the digital seem better/louder. Well, sometimes the old equipment is better. Analog audio only won't be a problem to me at all, I think you know what you're doing. It was just me who was a little curious about a possible difference between the tracks. I've not that much knowledge when it comes to LD.

I don't think Rikter was responsible for that transfer.

I think he was just putting it out there for people, i do think he authored the DVD though.  Not sure who the capper was.

Finally got the old girl hooked back up tonight. Had a few tv gremlins to overcome, but made a first try at this. Will watch the discs on a bigger screen when I've had some sleep. I'm probably going to have nightmares about robotic motorcycle cops chasing me! ;)

Keep in mind they didn't exactly use a pristine film element. Some white speck actually gets stuck on the left side of the frame towards the end. (It was probably invisible on a old analog tv.) The soundtrack however was sweet, even through tv speakers.

That's some great news, SilverWook! :)

I know that the transfer on this LD isn't the best and that it's a little dirty in some places but it doesn't matter to me, I'm really excited about this. I don't know, I think I would actually be fine to have it just as it is, without any cleanup. Maybe resize it to 16:9 and improve the contrast a little as I remember it looking flat and washed out sometimes. What do you think? It would be nice if someone could help out and try to improve it of course. When you get the time, maybe you could post a few caps of it here.

Thank you for doing this! If you want a CD-rip of the FSM THX soundtrack or a hi-res poster scan, let me know.

Yeah i am surprised someone has not done a isolated score for Graffiti or THX.  But the change in the forum rules would make that a custom DVD and not allowed.  I guess the only thing allowed is a how to guide if you have the official CD's whether they are out of print or not.

As for the lalo schiffrin score i was under the impression some of it was different on the CD than how it was in the film.

Yes, the score is presented a little different in the final film, but I was just thinking if I could offer SilverWook something for the kindness of him capturing this LD.

Can you suggest a good site to upload screencaps to? Haven't uploaded pics in ages...

I wish somebody could tell us if the Japanese LD was a different transfer. It came out a couple years after the U.S. disc.

Yes, it would be nice to know. If I understand it correctly, the Japanese is from '94? my bet is that it's from the same master but it could look better of course, I've heard the '86 JSC Star Wars should be better looking than the '92 US LD even though they use the same master.

I migrated to a laptop PC several months ago, and only now do I find out the included DVD software doesn't even have a simple screengrab function! >_<

Unless someone can suggest a cheap downloadable option, I'm going to see if I still have something left on my desktop dinosaur that will do the job.

You could always download the free VLC media player:

http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

There's an easy snapshot function on it.

Looking damn good to me! Much better than I thought it would. :) Perhaps a little improved black level should make it look even better. What do you think?

Wow, that looks better than I expected, too.

Msycamore's right, it just needs a bit of black-level adjustment and it'll be perfect.  Are you planning on converting to anamorphic 16:9?  That would make this cap perfect.

I would rather hand this off to someone who actually knows what they're doing in that department. ;)

More screencaps in a bit.

Here's where the infamous mystery fleck appears, and is stuck in the frame for several minutes!
