THE OT SOUNDTRACKS SALVAGE - SWESBROTJ -"remastered"(so far)+ LP's (Released)

 (Edited)

Hi,

This topic is dedicated to the preservation efforts of two people, presented here together.

THE 7FN RSO ANH & ESB LP’S TRANSFERS (PURE VERSIONS)

Let me first introduce the work of Seventiesfilmnut (7FN), who had the generosity despite what he was going through, to achieve his work and ship it by airmail to the galaxy where I live!

Indeed I received from him both his transfers of the RSO Recordings LP’S of STAR WARS and THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK wich he originaly made in 24bit / 96khz ( … 2x2,5GB… Please don’ t ask for it !).
Here is presented for convenience the 16bit/44khz versions in Flac Format as a 2CD set, with a restoration of the original covers in 300dpi resolution, from high quality arts.

I won’t discuss the sound quality here: this topic has been made to let us know about your experience of it. 😉 Just be aware that the sound has been cleaned by 7FN, but not as much as you would call it “pristine”. I am however a purist myself regarding the sound, but in the way such as these kinds of details are part of the pleasure.

A lot of thanks 7FN !!! This set really captures the true substance of Star Wars in all its simplicity !

THE OT REMASTERED SCORES (ANTHO+SE’S)

The second object to be related in here is my own restitution effort of all the three original trilogy scores through remastering. Its goal was to bring back most of the sound qualities the original transfers may have given before they were hidden trough the desastrous Special edition and the average Anthology, though I’m not a specialist to these scores in particular (refer to Goodmusician’s “complete scores” thread for detailled infos about this mess… ).

Let’s be clear on what it is expected to be found in these recordings:
You may find more dephts, unexpected details and clarity compared to the CD’s you already own. Some around have already experienced RotJ from this set and were amazed and very happy with the result. It is to be said I don’t cheat with any software effects and don’ t use any other way than equalization, what leads me to the following point…

By enhancing the qualities of what the source may be, it was obvious that it enhanced its faults too as some hiss and rare cracklings from the master tapes (RotJ), or a few noisy saturation in the highs -rarely too- (“Luke Pursues The Captives” on ESB). But listen to carefuly the same track on the Anthology and you’ ll hear that yet, the remastering was dealing to hide such unrepairable faults.

ESB has also a lot of cuts that you will hear easily with headphones, as you will on the RSO recording version besides.

… These last points are part of the scores though, and are noticed to your attention as a warning for some “perfection” runners who would dream of something completely glossy without a fault.
The main challenge of these remasterings was to give the best as possible the same temper to all the cues on one entire score, what I consider in the end, and despite a couple tracks remaining quite flat on ESB and RotJ, successful enough to be truly worthy of interest. I didn’ t want to use any “normalization” filter, so all the volumes have been equalized one by one to fit all together.

REMASTERING NOTES & INFOS:

STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE

(From the ANTHOLOGY, the SPECIAL EDITION + some tracks from GoodMusician’s 3CD set)

First I’d like to thank GoodMusician for allowing me to share my version of this one: I asked to him twice, and in my country a silence equals a Yes ! 😃 Indeed, I borrowed some of his tracks for their clean ending + some extra tracks you’ll find on CD2.

However I considered all of this needed to be remastered too and notably the highs of the cues wich belong to the score to be calm down. Please, note that this is only my opinion that I share to inform on what I did…

This score was the easiest of the three to work with because it has not been as “butchered” as the others. But there was still work to do with it. Between others, your ears will probably thank me not to be blown away by the trumpets, far too high on all the versions I heard before, excepted on the RSO recording.

I hope you’ll forgive and forget the mistake I made while editing “The Walls Converge” to have the clean ending: the volume of the four last seconds is to low. Otherwise, it seems all good to me.

THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK
(From the ANTHOLOGY + the SPECIAL EDITION)

Here is a score that was very difficult to deal with, due to a certain lack of flexibility in its sound. It is to be said I wasn’ t satisfied with the result until I’ve heard the RSO transfer from 7FN, though its qualities remain at a different level.

The RSO provides a strong consistency and clarity for instruments like flutes and triangle what is not the case of my version where they are more “hidding” behind. However, the real surprise is that my remastered version brought sounds that are nearly absent on the RSO, as for archers stroke on cellos on some cues for exemple, and even gratings from the musicians chairs during many silences. This one version has finally a far better dynamic, more relief, warmth and depth than the previous CD releases. I would be very curious to know what listeners may think about it…

Be sure I made nearly all that I could to give it the best.

RETURN OF THE JEDI

(From the ANTHOLOGY + the SPECIAL EDITION)

On the contrary of all of what people may think, write and observe about this one through the so poor CD releases we all know, I noticed this score had, excepted for a very few tracks, a very strong and interesting potencial for remastering, what was not obvious at first glance.
With this one I somehow have the feeling to have “undone” what the SE’s and Anthology had done. I don’ t know if it is the best result of all the present scores, but it is my best work on them anyway and possibly the more surprising… I leave it to your appreciation.

Note: No “Parade Of The Ewoks” concert version on this set.

As the previous set, all of it is available - and only - in Flac format.
All covers are included (Style A, B or C posters digitally restored in 300dpi).

How to get it:

I rely now on people who would have found in these versions of the scores what they waited for so long - if they did - , to be kind to preserve and share them again for the ones who will be willing to give a listen (Beatho is already OK for taking care of it, see post below. Just PM him).

The set is also foundable on the alt.binaries.starwars thanks to ryanvb.

You may also try this temporary key 😉

Please note that once you get them, they’re yours ! It is useless to ask me if you may share them by torrent, to post them elsewhere, to use them for your edit etc… The answer is already YES !

My only wishes may be:

  • That you give feedback on the actual topic to keep it alive and preserve it from beeing forgotten in the dephts of the forum. Just be generous: let people know it exists.

  • That you give credits to 7FN RSO transfers (present on the infos.txt).

  • That you keep the burning infos that are important for the 0 sec pause tracks on the remasters.

  • That you fully enjoy this whole set !

PLEASE !.. We’re not machines ! Thanks to formulate your request with more than two words (= minimum of politness.

Can you provide details about the procedures & softwares used for downsampling & dithering of 7FN's hi-rez masters?

However, in practice you must take into account the “fuckwit factor”. Just talk to Darth Mallwalker…

Hey folks.

I used dbpoweramp's (paid for version) professional sample rate converter which to my ears sounded just as good as using Adobe Audition using it's fancy settings on a few test tracks I ran beforehand.

I'm afraid this will be the last post here for a while. I need to concentrate on getting better and getting out more (or trying to). In the words of an ex-terminator.... "I'll be back!" ;)

Thanks to ABC for all his hard work :)

Just so you guys know, ABC's remastered versions are incredible. ABC, you really should consider making these a torrent or making a public library for those everyone can download, great work indeed!

Just to say that after May 2009 when ABC will be retiring so to speak, I will be happy to share the links with any people who ask for them and I might torrent it on Demonoid.com as well just to keep them going.

Thanks again ABC, they are really really something good!

Thanks guys !... And take your time to explore this stuff. I'm especially curious to know how far the remasters of ESB and ANH make a difference to your ears... The changes are a little more subtle than they are for RotJ I think.

@ Beatho: Ok, thanks. I'm about to make this mention in the first post... So, was this Lightsaber Duel the "icing on the cake" as you expected? (Big smile on my face).

...Wow is all I can say... honestly, when I heard the choir and strings melody when Luke charges out to confront Vader for the last time... I got shivers down my spine! A serious well done, can I ask how you managed it? What software did you use? I honestly don't know how you managed to get such clarity from such... rubbish.

Sonically the sound of 7FN's Empire Strikes Back LP rip frickin rocked as i listened to the opening bars of the star wars theme blare over my speakers.  The highs and the greater depth of sound i can totallly notice with my ears, even the lows and the greater soundstage and equalization beat the special edition release hands down.

I don't have the software nore do i have the 24 bit original 7FN made.  If you made a sound graph of that versus the Arista Records and Special Edition Releases Plus the truncated original RSO cd release on Polydor what the result would be i don't know.  I do know from experience High end captures of LP material give a much warmer sound than music that has been overly digitally cleaned by noise reduction, processed or compressed.

The one problem is that some tracks have pops or hiss or a crackle.  Though i would rather have that then ruin the sound by Processing it through a DNR filter.  I did that once with Goldwave and used the light settings and still the music was altered.

I'm glad to hear you on this cue! As I said, this rubbish as you call it, as a good or would I say a great potential for remastering. Don' t trust what you see, nor what you hear ;).

The main softwares I used are 1). My ears 2). My feelings !... though the 1) and 2) may invert during the process :). A third point I noticed that would go with the ears is a good memory of the sound, because you won' t hear the same thing with your headphones while remastering than on your Hi-Fi ect... As 7FN said on the previous thread: one must be sure it will really improves the sound, not just give him a beautiful "look" or design.

Otherwise it's a secret.... A disappointing one! Lol! However, I worked step by step (making pre-remasters) and it asked to be well planned. And last but not least, I took all the time it needed.

Wonderful work ABC it sounds like I had out my turntable playing the old records. the sound really beats whats out their. I am glad you kept the noise and people if you dont want the noise just lower the treble.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

"your ears will probably thank me not to be blown away by the trumpets, far too high on all the versions I heard before, excepted on the RSO recording"

That's true. I have some sort of sensitivity with my ears, especially the left one, where it sort of buzzes when there are certain sounds, and really loud trumpets can do it. Though I can't think of any specific examples of this happening with the soundtracks, it certainly sounds plausible to me.

"However, the real surprise is that my remastered version brought sounds that are nearly absent on the RSO, as for archers stroke on cellos on some cues for exemple, and even gratings from the musicians chairs during many silences."

That is really cool. Though it is nice to hear pristine recordings for most types of music, for classical and such, it really makes me feel like there are a ton of people in the room and it is pretty much impossible to keep 100% silent. Can be fun to hear little noises. :)

This thread reminds me that I got the original 2 LP Star Wars set at Salvation Army a few months ago in perfect shape...for 25 cents! (2001: A Space Odyssey, too) And I keep forgetting I actually have a record player here, though I don't know if it actually works. My mother sort of uses it as a coffee table. :p

Anyway, I'm going to PM you for some links, ABC. Thanks!

Well, beware for your left ear then... Both the RSO and the remastered ANH have still strong trumpets, especially for the last battle track(s). I only make the difference between "strong" and 'tooooo strong" ;)

If one wants to hear music as if he was on stage or at a concert, he won' t be silly enough to think about hidding such "noises", I think. They're all natural. You may find that it gives an unexpected dimension or perhaps even a characteristic tension to the music (listen to "loosing a hand" and "hyperspace" for reference).

One thing I've noticed is that my copy of the LPs isn't by RSO. It says on the back 'manufactured and distributed by GRC of Canada.' Exact same content and packaging, just pressed in Canada instead of the U.S. :) I love the sleeve in it, too.

I have a set of mozarts The Abduction from the Seraglio and you can hear everything, from peoples foots keeping time to the rosin being appied during resatatives. And that was a recording from the 70's. This set still is very good. I like it simply because it is almost complete. Although I did add some tracks from my other sets. Like on one set their is an alternate Ewoks song so I just popped in the parade of ewoks from my anthology set between the other ewok songs.

Otherwise it's a secret.... A disappointing one! Lol! However, I worked step by step (making pre-remasters) and it asked to be well planned. And last but not least, I took all the time it needed.

I know the secret I know the secret! Haha but don't worry your secret is safe with me ABC. (You mentioned it in a pm once). But it's not disappointing, I mean look at how good the original Star Wars movie was, and it was made by incredibly...er... "bootleg" methods (though that's not exactly what I mean, unconventional might be better!) Yet with both products the result is great!

I need some help with this,I am not an expert CD burner LOL,but I see in the ESB info you have this:

"IMPORTANT: 0'sec pause at tracks: CD2: 09. 11. "

is the 0 pause in between 8 to 9 or 9 to 10,I am confused is the pause before or after your song track mentioned, also what program is used to do individual pausing?
I see in Nero you can either have no pauses or pause the whole thing,no seperate settings,1 thing though,if you would have ripped these flac files in EAC and used a cue sheet we would not have to set these 0 sec pauses between certain songs.

thanks for the help

If you have Nero, select the track and in the properties, tip 0. It is the pause before the track (or between the previous and this one).

PS: Watch out, there're some on RotJ too.
