THE ARRIVAL: Special Edition (seeking a team up)
Hey gang!!

Well my current financial situation has left me in a bind so I've been forced to sell of 60% of my transfer equipment over the last few weeks (My friend got my Sima Color Corrector, Vidicraft Vidimate [w/ s-video] and my International C, my capture cards and sadly my Panasonic AG-1970) so I will not be able to complete a few of my planned transfers (that and I'm doing the BR set still).

MAINLY the Arrival: Special Edition…

This is the Pioneer release special edition that includes commentary from writer/director David N. Twohy, a short making of, interviews, trailers and an alternate ending. I know that a lot of folks think that this was a bomb but I really dug the film and I’m sure that there are a few fans here (I hope!)

I’d like to get this one done proper but I no longer have the means (save my set-top recorder), I’d like to make the menus still as I have them on my HD I’m really after someone that would like to team up (their transfer, my menus and upload) so if anyone is interested in taking my LD boxset and doing the transfer of this awesome laserdisc just drop me a PM and I’ll make arrangements with you (I would prefer someone with both a stand rep here on the boards & with LD>DVD transfer experience) so you can get the LD and a DVD copy of the in-store (looped) Making of the Arrival VHS tape!

Well thanks for looking in!

RiK

Wow cool. I really love this film and have done since it first came it.

An underrated gem so good luck with it.

(that and I'm doing the BR set still).

What's the BR set?

I have always loved this movie, and so has everyone I've ever shown it to. Great idea for a project!

I'm totally interested, but I have no means of helping either.
If you want to contact me, please, please email me. My PMs are turned off because I just plain don't like dealing in PM space. If you email me at reverendbeastly AT gmail DOT com, I will respond swiftly. Thanks!

Oh, I remember that... I think that was the B genre's response to the magnificent "Contact"... Nowhere near Contact's level in any respect, of course, but rather entertaining nonetheless.

Actually, I even bought this last year - a US edition has it bundled with its dreadful sequel on one disc. I may have its screenplay for potential inclusion... I'd have to check.

This movie was much better than Contact. OK, maybe the production values weren't as high, but at least the aliens looked like aliens, and not the main character's father. What a load of crap that was!

RE: THE ARRIVAL: Special Edition (seeking a team up)

Apologies for bumping such an old post, but this is surely better than making another separate one about it.

I'd like to know if there is someone out there (by now) who may have ripped this LD with all the special features, even if the transfer quality is poor would not matter to me.  I've seen that the Blu-Ray of this movie came out in 2009 with no extras whatsoever (less than the previous DVD release had had).

Also, here's a good brief synopsis on the movie and making-of etc ...

Thanks.

Wow, this is crazy. I just bought the Blu Ray and I had on my mind after watching it. I just happened to visit this board after months of being away in hopes someone was doing this project! Wow.

It accidentally happens that I have both versions of "The Arrival" on laserdisc (the normal edition and the special edition boxset, STILL SEALED!) AND a very good choice of laserdisc players - between them, again accidentally, the Pioneer HLD-X9...

Maybe a new preservation project is "arrived"? ;)

Are you still up to do this preservation? If not, send it to me and I'll do it. I have an LD player, capturing hardware, and menu design capabilities.

Now I'm really involved into my SW projects!

As soon as they will be released - hope before the end of this month - I could think about it; I have good LD players, good capture card, but poor menu design capabilities - truth is that my free time is all devoted to SW project, and I have no time to dedicate to/I'm too lazy to learn how to make good DVD/AVCHD/BD menus... (^^,)

May you help me with the SW menus?

I could try to help with the menus. No guarantees on their level of fanciness though. I mostly use TMPGEnc Authoring and/or DVD Styler, the former of which is simple, the latter of which has more options but is way more buggy.

If you're in the US, you can send me the discs and/or The Arrival, or if you're not find some more private to host them and I'll get them that way.

What about using MultiAVCHD for menus? It could author not only AVCHD, but BD and DVD too!

Sent you a PM.

The Blu-ray quality is utter crap. Far too much DNR along with EE to be a proper source. Also it's only single layered so I've already made an exact copy of it.

Be sure when you do make a transfer from the HLD-X9, not to remove any of the film grain which lies in the image. DVD9 for the film with commentary and perhaps a DVD5 for special features?

RE: THE ARRIVAL: Special Edition (seeking a team up)

I'd be more eager to burn a BD25 compared to resorting to AVCHD. How about subtitles? The audio for the main English track for the Blu-ray should be PCM or highest bitrate feasible. Perhaps the commentary as a 448kbps DTS stereo track.

For the BD25 be sure to match it as close to film as possible and use AVC with a good bitrate thereby leaving in the film grain. What about subtitling the commentary and all the video bonus features?

About subtitles: I didn't think about them... could you provide them, if they are on the BD and/or DVD? I could try to extract them from the laserdisc CC, but until now I have not find a working software that could take them from the captured video and save as text.

For the extra and commentary subtitles: my english is good, but I think I'll be not able to transcribe an entire commentary and extra features... here, an external help MUST BE provided!

If I'll release a BD25, I think to add the original PCM soundtrack (just converted from 44.1KHz to 48KHz); obviously, I will add the AC3 soundtrack too. For the commentary, maybe 448kbps DTS is not needed, as a lower bitrate will be enough, but I'm open to every suggestion.

About video bitrate, I usually use 7000 or 8000kbps for AVCHD, with pretty good results; for BD, I think 15000kbps will be enough for the movie and the alternative ending, less for the extras.

For the BD25 do it maximum bitrate as possible but still have the extra features as 480p but AVC at a lower bitrate. Seamless branching?
