RE: "Star Wars is the most overrated franchise ever."

I think with the prequel trilogy, the started on the wrong foot, and went rapidly downhill with each installment, with the later two being even more unwatchable than Episode I. At least in TPM there was the nostalgia of the time when it came out, the hype, and the ultimate disappointment many fans felt with the film. I honestly don't know why the other two exist other than make money and Lucas' need to complete the new trilogy. The fact that Episode I is the best the PT ever got...that's pretty sad.

Sounding like a broken record since May 2006.

Also the clip below shows the kind of stuff George shot before Muren, Burtt, Williams and Co sorted it out...

So you are using failed special effects footage to prove Lucas incompetence as a director? This is the sort of stuff Lucas got great chest pains from during the production.

It was the first cut of the film when John Jympson was still the editor that was a disaster, special effects and editing was junk at that point. The film didn't start to take shape until Lucas fired Jympson halfway through the production and started to edit the film himself and ultimately hired Paul Hirsch, Richard Chew and his wife Marcia Lucas. The rear projection stuff was just another failed step during the production.

It's amazing to what lengths people are ready to go when it comes to criticizing Lucas. George himself was an uncredited editor on the film, some people seems to forget that. It may be hard to accept now for some but it was very much George Lucas who was the main driving force behind the original Star Wars. Sure, he did have a great team around him but without Lucas as the captain of the ship, it would have sunk.

The later installments in the series is another matter...

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

I fail to see what the value of having a "Star Wars really actually sucks a heck of a lot, but people are too fanboyish to admit it" thread on a forum dedicated to those who have a mutual interest in the OOT.

Seriously, CatBus, if Star Wars is so overrated, why on earth do you bother to work on translating subtitles for such a mediocre franchise into so many languages?

It really baffles me. "Hey, let's hang out and talk about Star Wars. I love Star Wars, it's great, and I'll always remember my first wonderful experience with it. But truthfully, no, it really actually sucks."

What the hell??

EDIT: This is the part where someone says "but 'overrated' doesn't mean 'sucks'." Okay, no it doesn't. What it does mean is that people are too apparently stupid to wake up and be realistic that they shouldn't find nearly as much joy in Star Wars as they seem to say they do.

I love the OOT. It's my favorite series of all time. That is, of course, all thanks to Adywan and Harmy. I don't adore the prequels, nor do I particularly enjoy their official releases. I do, however, enjoy the prequels after they've been edited by certain fans.

I like finding joy in watching these films. I don't know why you even hang out here if all you want to do is sit around and be cynical about it.

Probably because he truly love Star Wars '77 and ESB '80 and kinda like ROTJ '83.

You can dislike parts of this franchise and still be a fan.

I really don't care how much of an OT fanboy you are you've have to admit that ROTS isn't anywhere near bad.

TMP molests the story of the OOT, AOTC beats it to a bloody pulp, and ROTS completely disembowels it.

So, yeah, it isn't anywhere near bad - it's far, far beyond that.

Precisely. They were all mind numbingly awful and ROTS was the rancid icing on a particularly displeasing cake that gave you bile.

Can't we all just go back to 1995, when we all we had to do was sweep the problems of ROTJ under the rug?

Yes if we could all "Unlearn what we have learned" we'd all be a lot happier.

Precisely.  I love the OOT and want it preserved for posterity, globally.  The rest of the franchise could be destroyed in a warehouse fire and I'd only shed a tear for the loss of the Holiday Special.  I don't actually think it's that uncommon a set of opinions here.  Obviously you're free to think differently.

Edited to add another reason: You underestimate the power of OCD.

I tend to believe Lucas has a mint, perfect copy of the OOT that he keeps all to himself and sits there stroking it at night while cackling evilly. Kinda like Blofeld with his cat. Boooo..!

"Overrated" means pretty much nothing anyway. All that matter is what YOU think and feel while watching a movie. And should we wait for ALL the sequels, TV series, Spinoffs etc. to be released to make a count about how many movies are good or bad so we can be really really sure that Star Wars is "overrated" or not? Come on.

Internet Feature Writing- "Hey, you know that thing you guys have all loved for years, has changed the face of entertainment and mass culture in America and has endured for decades? It'll be my pleasure to tell you why it sucks. You can trust an expert like me even though I've never produced films of my own. After all, I have my own web page."

All I really want is each film as it was originally seen and heard in theaters; no fixes, corrections, "improvements" or modifications necessary.

Disney need to get Charles de Lauzirika in to work on the OT. His work on the Blade Runner restoration was a masterclass in how to please everybody with a film release.

Loved that my Blade Runner boxset that he ut together has all the different versions.  But in truth Lauzirika's 'Final Cut' of the film is so good that I'd happily just own that cut, if that was the only option. I could never say that about a SW release.  He cleaned it, upgraded it and fixed in all kinds of subtle ways, without 'changing' anything.

Fast Five was a genuinely well done action movie.

I don't actually think it is the movies themselves that has caused such an emotional attachment but the world of possibilities they opened up. I think most of the books that have been written far outpace any of the movies. Part of the reason for most of us holding on to the OOT is there's never going to be anything that can hold a candle to the first experience of something great.

I also believe that to already state the future sequels as being garbage is beyond premature. JJ has done some things that are good, some things that are great, and some things that are crap much like any creative person ever.

Whoever uses word "overrated" is a complete jerk in my book. By saying that something is overrated, one directly implies that he/she regards his opinion more valid than the opinions of so many others.

Prequel Trilogy was supposed to be a story about a good man turning bad. In reality, it is a story about how a complete jerk (PT Anakin) turned into one of the best characters in film history (OT Vader)

RE: "Star Wars is the most overrated franchise ever."

No it implies they don't regard the opinions of others to be automatically accurate or in concord with their own.

They have a mind of their own.

The majority of people are astonishingly stupid so if something is rated by the majority they are probably wrong one way or another.

Now don't be stupid... opinion is opinion. One can't be more accurate than the other. And most certainly an opinion can't be wrong.

Opinions are points of view.

Anyone can hold any point of view but some will be more accurate than others.

I could hold the opinion that you are a pompous ass but it would doubtlessly be inaccurate, based solely on your above response alone.
