Where was the surprise with the prequels? What twists and turns were in it? Where was the anticipation of not knowing where the story was going next? The intention of telling a good (albeit, ultimately known story) was hmm, say, maybe 30% of the reason behind making the films. Everything was half arsed. Apart from the design of it. Gotta make the toys look good.
What?!?!?!?! Where was the surprise with the prequels?...
The suspenseful un-answered questions, that's where. Like...
Why did the Jedi design a fighter that required an Astro-Droid but was so low to the ground that the Astro-Droid couldn't get out (Except by using it's rocket boosters)?
Why is Anakin alowed to dress in cool looking black-leather while all the other Jedi have to dress like Monks?
How did Padme get through the first 20 years of her life without seeing a waterfall?
Why are Jedi impervious to heat?
Just who was Master Syfo Dyas anyway?
How come the Naboo starfighter was designed with no landing gear?
What is Jawa juice?
Why does Count Dooku keep his ship on the other side of the planet to his base of operations?
Why is the high ground so damned important?
And of course, how do you stop your own heart when your husband has just become a sith?
^ It's these kind of enternal mysteries that keep me coming back to this endlessly fascinating trilogy! ;-)

Speaking of surprise, we were up for a big surprise in 1999.
Prequel Trilogy was supposed to be a story about a good man turning bad. In reality, it is a story about how a complete jerk (PT Anakin) turned into one of the best characters in film history (OT Vader)

Well Disney will sure make it as good as possible. But that "good" is defined by today's mainstream expectations (which does not reflect mine).
I could be wrong. Maybe the films will be good after all.
I understand your doubts. But JJ aside, the likes of Arndt, Kasdan, Kinberg et al are reasons for optimism. And they're all massive fans. As for JJ? he will probably get the best script and screenplay he's ever had to work with from Arndt. It's going to be interesting to see what he does with it.

Don't remind me! Lol. All the ingredients are different this time though I feel. The cake won't turn out to be tasteless, charred mess. (Like one of my drunken fry ups) ;)

Some of the designs of the Prequel craft were pretty good,.....but the Droid slots don't make sense on any of them, the Naboo fighters show clearly that the hole for R2's head is on a tube which has no provision for R2's legs/shoulders.....the cross section explination demonstrates that his head extends away from his body (Inspector Gadget style)....but then the ship doesn't have enough depth for his body.....also the hole for his head doesn't allow for the holoprojectors
How the designer made compromises like this is beyond me.....and did it again for the ROTS Starfighter....there is no room for an R2 unit in there, his lower body & feet magically disappear into the dimension warping droid slot......balls up

Exactly. After 10 years and 2 or 3 watches of the PT trilogy it still keeps me guessing!
But after watching the OT 100-200 times, with it's believable characters, coherant plots and logical events I get bored. Yawn :-O

Ep7 will (hopefully) be JJ making a 1977 Lucas movie in the same way Super 8 was JJ making a 1977 Spielberg movie. I haven't rewatched it since the theater, but I'll have to do so one of these days. The trailer was on a blu-ray I was watching the other day. Some of the shots really jumped out at me as "wow, those literally look like they could've been straight out of Close Encounters."
If he can do the same thing with Ep7 (simply replace "Close Encounters" with "Star Wars '77"), we'll be in good shape.

Just a simple manTake this with a mountain of salt.

In a marginally related story, Star Wars: Episode VII may need a new director. Badass Digest is hearing rumors from multiple sources that Abrams is close to dropping out of the highly anticipated sequel. Abrams protested against shooting the movie in England (presumably because he didn’t want to be away from his family for so long), but was overruled by the studio. Although this decision wasn’t recent, the rumors of his leaving the project continue to percolate. Badass says these rumors will merit more serious consideration if there’s no announcement of any kind at Germany’s Star Wars celebration regarding Episode VII and Abrams isn’t present. It’s worth noting that if Abrams chooses to leave Episode VII, that doesn’t mean he’s automatically going back to Trek. He’s a highly in-demand director, and I’d expect he would have a wide variety of projects to choose from should he leave Star Wars.

Padawan LearnerThe schedule does seem kind of intimidating. The new Star Wars that has to launch the next 20 years of everything and also doesn't squander the return of han and luke and also doesn't look like green screen shit has to be done in 20 months. Go.

True or not. The fact that there are even rumours of discord are a concern.
Don't make life difficult for JJ Disney. Have faith that you picked the right dude for the gig and let him get on with it. Sign the outgoing cheques and then cash the larger incoming ones when it gets released... simple.

I can not believe he's still pissing about filming in England (if true?) yeah it maybe at bit of an upheaval, but think of the countless people that have to temporarily uproot due to their jobs. You signed up, sacrifices have to be made, if its such a big deal? Then leave your family at home. Get real.

StarkillerIt's not difficult to understand why people believe Abrams is getting itchy feet. This is the guy who initially turned down the job, has refused to commit to the scheduled 2015 release, and has bitched about working in the UK (saying it was making him 'crazy').
These things don't exactly fill me full of confidence in him.

Could be a good thing. Lucas had nothing but trouble and discomfort while working on the original film and look how that turned out. He had no complaints on the set of the prequels and look how those turned out.
