Where am I????I would be amazed if any Star Wars VHS was ever released without copy protection.
It has been a long time since I recorded to a DVD recorder my PAL VHS collection but I had to do a Macrovision hack to get them to record.
I am however willing to be proved incorrect..........

The first film released with Macrovision protection was The Cotton Club in 1984. Any SW VHS released prior to 1984 should be free of it!

Padawan LearnerI remember that...and some VCRs connections couldn't even play the tape...forget about copying it. I of course tried to copy it just to see if I could...lol. I could not at the time. I did copy STAR WARS tapes prior to that and had success.

I No My Spelling and Grammar Stinks. If I offend I am Sorry.
Well my Dad had a ANH & ESB & ROTJ, copy from rental.
Amazing that ROTJ would be available before 1984 it came
out in 1983 right.
Although ROTJ was missing the ending, it cut off after burning Vader.
Some years after we got a rely copy and I saw Yub Nub.
Than 1997 they cut out the Yub Nub Song! Noooooooooooooooo!

some dudeNot sure why you are looking for tapes without Macrovision. It is very very easy to copy tapes with it.
My current setup can do it, and I imagine most other people around here could do the same. Especially if you have a capture card of some type installed on your computer or something like an Canopus ADVC110.
Macrovision essentially used trickery to make older recorders THINK there was a problem with the signal, thus you would just get a bunch of tearing and chroma goofyness. Any modern recording method (like the ones I mentioned above) pretty much just ignore the trickery from Macrovision.

I am trying to get an idea of what I first saw Star Wars on.
I am almost shore it was a copy of a rental. At the time the
only way I would have gotten it was to have a tape without Macrovision.

How ? Sorry for the offtopic, but I have a few Macrovision-protected VHS tapes which I want to digitize for myself, but I always end with an error message saying that Macrovision protected tapes cannot be transferred. I tried it with a standalone Samsung DVD recorder, and with an PC with a capture card

The standalone DVD recorders generally don't ignore the Macrovision signals, unfortunately. So it will be next to impossible to copy using that method.
Is your deck a VHS/DVD combo deal? A lot of those have had issues simply playing Macrovision tapes. I have one that has the hardest time playing Disney tapes.
But if you have a standalone VHS player, plugged into a PC capture card then it shouldn't be an issue. I personally have a hauppauge internal PCI card and have no issues with Macrovision.
A lot of people also go the ADVC110 route http://www.grassvalley.com/products/advc110

If that doesn't happen you can ask for a spleen invite here:

From the first post:
If there is any interest in this I can get it uploaded to MySpleen this holiday weekend.

THC-1138 meets TK-420^Yes, retartedted's is on myspleen.
The Starkiller's 1982 rental VHS
might be found on a.b.starwars
along with my IVTC script
However, in practice you must take into account the "fuckwit factor". Just talk to Darth Mallwalker...

At the bottom of this ebay listing is an example of how passable it can look through a good set up:

LA GUERRE DES ETOILESAlright.... hopefully the guy who won this bidding is a member of OT.com and will give us the nicest transfer ever. It's impressive how a 30 year old VHS can actually look better than some DVDs out there.

The Interweb is a Series of TubesFWIW, these colors are very close to what's on PS78.

If you really like this transfer, I can recommend the 1985 CAV standard play LD, uses the same transfer.
We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

I disagree I think PS78 has a greater depth to the colours in it, once you pump them up a bit i see an appreciable difference, like say the rich blue in the paintwork on R2D2 / the reflective quality of the C3POs metal, the official telecines always flatten/simplify the colours by being over bright. (The PS78 is dark, but theres richness in the darkness)

I demand PS78 be released once more AntcuFaalb !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, I promise that it will get released sometime soon.
However, it won't be as good as it can be, due to the AGC-related problems.
:-(
Anyway, I find that PS78 is a bit too green-tinted for my taste.
