RE: Star Trek Into Darkness Full Spoiler Discussion

Both films open on primitive planets where an alien spaceship seen floating over water is later interpreted as belonging to Gods.

Spock is prepared to sacrifice his life for this world, Bald Muscle Smurf Prime does sacrifice himself for us.

Black Goo = Magic Khan blood.

Two big ships clash causing one to fall to the surface ending in fisticuffs.

In the end the survivors fly off to a vague location/probable sequel.

Shatner's syrup grows legs and tries to give Khan the baby.... no that was a cheese induced nightmare.

Today (for the remaining 15 minutes) is my birthday.  Part of the treat was going to see Star Trek Into Darkness.  I've been avoiding this thread, so I may have catching up to do, but man, this movie was awesome!  Just had to say how pleased I was, especially when compared to the first.

The ROTJ collaborative thread is a wealth of ideas, both on how to edit Return of the Jedi, as well as how to collaborate in an edit.  Emanswfan has taken leadership of the project.

How is Starfleet more militaristic than in any of the older films?

See: Any film where they're in the red uniforms, but especially the central conflict of ST:VI:TUC

Starfleet never actually engaged the Klingon's as a whole, only Enterprise/Excelsior fought a rogue General and prevented an assassination.

Also someone on the IMDB board noticed something strange. When Kirk and Spock are discussing being assigned as diplomats, there is a woman sitting in the background.

My theory is that it was Valeris in disguise, it's the only way she would've known about Kirk wanting the Klingons dead. Of course this may have been a mistake, but it explains a lot.

Uh...Several Starfleet Admirals conspired with the Klingons to assassinate Gorkon - Purely to keep the Federation and the Klingon high command apart. He was in fact killed by two STARFLEET officers.

And then they covertly planned to extradite Kirk and McCoy from Prison after [basically] promising Gorkon's daughter they would not. - She even states that such an act would be considered an act of war.

Valeris was standing right by Kirk's open doorway as he gave his whole spiel about never trusting Klingons and not being able to forgive them. Granted it seems too much of a co-incidence to be operating purely on that.

Orci: "I only want to be on Star Trek as long as I’m useful and helpful to what Star Trek is. The minute that I’m a burden on it, then I should not be here. I want the best idea to win. Hopefully, if this movie works, Paramount will be thinking about a third movie and, if I have the best idea, I should win. If I don’t, someone else should win. That’s how much I love Star Trek. The best idea should win, period."

Did he ask anyone besides Lindelof? He could have asked me...

I came up with a Star Trek 09 sequel where the Enterprise uses Spock Prime's knowledge of the future to preemptively meet V'ger thousands of light years from Earth. The Enterprise is seen as an infested organism like in the original, but in this timeline the ship is transported by V'ger to the machine planet that originally accepted Voyager, and Enterprise is given sentience to fulfill the mission that its crew is so unwilling to accomplish:

"To explore strange new worlds; to seek out new life forms and new civilizations; to boldly go where no man has gone before."

Therefore the crew is forced to deal with a ship that will go anywhere in the universe except for Earth and the planets of the Federation.

I think that it's a better story than KHAN! again.

Star Trek: Stargate: Universe.

The film itself was a great ride. The only thing that slightly annoyed me was Benedict playing Khan. Yeh, i know it's an alternate timeline and all that, but Khan and his cohorts were created BEFORE the timeline went off in the new direction. So why has he suddenly changed race? Wasn't Khan supposed to have been Indian? Not a British white guy? But apart from that Benedict played a good villain, even if he wasn't the main one.

I had the same thought, but it didn't bug me at all.  Ricardo Montalban was Mexican, after all (with a clear Mexican accent, especially in Space Seed). :D  Of course, I'm slowly working through the thread and this point may have already been made, but I just had to laugh about this weird inconsistency.  But it truly never bothered me.

The Vengeance crashing into skyscrapers unfortunately took me out of the movie. We don't need disaster porn in Trek.

This part bugged me too. We made a big deal about saving the crew of the Enterprise. We made a big deal about Kirk dying. Then we crash a giant ship into a city that would have easily killed far more in number than the entire crew of the Enterprise. With the number of buildings that monstrosity of a ship plowed through, this disaster must have been like 9/11 many, many times over. Nothing about this horrible disaster is ever mentioned and we transition to a smiley happy ending because, wooo, Kirk is alive again and the crew of the Enterprise survived to go on an exciting mission of exploration. Cue cheery TOS end credit music.

I feel like Spock should be standing trial for irresponsibly destroying a giant spaceship in a way that caused it to crash land on a densely populated city.

The whole scene existed solely for the whole "Whoa! Would you look at all the pretty EXPLOSIONS and DESTRUCTION!!! WAHHH!!! YEAAH!!! WOOOOOO!!!" effect.

I'll re-re-restate that I loved this movie, but I did have the same thought.  I actually think it could and should have better mirrored TWOK in leaving Kirk dead and implying the Vengeance was completely destroyed near the moon.

Why was it so big if it was designed to be piloted by a small crew or at a pinch by one person?

Big things are usually big because the space has to be filled with people and stuff.

I do think these writers need to learn a fun little rule:

When characters act out of character, it can be a disturbing, emotional turn for the audience and signify great change in the character.  However, if you have them constantly act out of character, then you suck at writing without turning to gimmicks to grab the audience's attention.

Case in point:  I think, over the course of the two movies, Spock has beaten the crap out of so many people that it's no longer even remotely outside of his character.  This new Kirk is a fratty douche, and the new Spock likes to scream and beat people up.  Fabulous...

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming... Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

Watching a Leonard Nimoy Star Trek restrospective from around the time of TWOK.

When talking about the origin of the Vulcan Nerve pinch, he said it served two valuable purposes:  It increased the mystery of Spock and "it also allowed Leonard Nimoy to avoid a lot of running and jumping and fighting."

Yeah.  Wouldn't want Spock to do too much of that, huh? ;-)

No, it goes, four, five, six, one, two, three… No, it goes: four, five, six. One... Two and three have not been made." "Two and three have not been made! What should they be?" "What should they be? We do not know. All we know is that there will be a big floppy character in it that goes, squawk squawk squawk... who needs a punch up the bracket!"

It's from the forum TREKBBS. They were guessing what a better version of Trek 09's Enterprise would look like. I think I suggested the Pez dispenser nacelles.
