Whenever an MMO is dismantled, there is a major outcry from the game’s fans. Star Wars Galaxies is no exception, and fans of the long-running MMO are trying their best to save it from a December shut-down.
Several groups have started petitions to try and convince SOE to give a free-to-play model a try instead of shutting it down, but SOE has reacted pretty harshly to such attempts.
Any mentioned of saving the game has caused forum topics on the game’s site to be deleted.
According to reports, some fans are seeking legal action, hoping that they can avoid a shutdown through some legal loophole.

^ This is understandable from the majority of the members of this community, but there are more posts in the SW Galaxies forum then the official one which went down recently and people are actively working to save SW Galaxies which they didn't for the official forum shut down. What that says about the movies and the games is for your opinion posts, but hopefully this is a sign of more SW enthusiasts supporting people saving 'any' SW culture. Could this be the SW gaming equivalent of this forums 2005 petition?

Just a simple man.It's kinda sad. I have two years or so of good memories of good times in SWG.
At the same time, though, SWG has been dead for me for years thanks to the NGE. I made it through the CU okay since it was still the same game at the core, but the NGE just killed it off.
As for saving it? No... no. Put a bullet in it and remember it as it was instead of the continuity-breaking, immersion-smashing, junk-collecting joke it became. I mean, you could seriously get the Star Wars movie posters in that game. And little dioramas of the Phantom Menace saber battle. And much more dumb shit like that. Forget it. The game is dead, and we should celebrate what it used to be at launch: a pretty fun game with a lot of potential.
I'm just glad that if I ever want my classic SWG fix, I can hop on over to the SWG emu and get it.

I played it for the first 3 years it was up, but quit after the big rule change. Sad to see it go for the people who still liked it. I tried to return twice, but lost interest quickly. Servers empty, and not very fun starting new characters with that low population.

Meh, I was playing the Matrix Online when it was still up - all I remember is how everyone was pissed at SOE for fucking up SWG, and doing this to MxO as well :D

Better a bad bomb than a bombadI recall a couple of my students who played it, and complained constantly that on the SWG fansite they frequented, there was a 'Screen Capture of the Day' page, and no matter what they did the winner was always some Jedi using force-lightning.

The speculation for the shutdown is the game had enough people still subscribed to keep the game afloat, but the licensing of SW properties is the costs which most likely sunk this ship.
