STAR WARS: the alt.binaries.starwars thread
I'm just posting this because all the usenet releases seem to be lumped into the Torrents thread and it's sorta confusing. So, Dark One, whoever else is gonna make usenet posts, this'd be a good place to do it.
If you want to contact me, please, please email me. My PMs are turned off because I just plain don't like dealing in PM space. If you email me at reverendbeastly AT gmail DOT com, I will respond swiftly. Thanks!

Sorry to seem so anal, but can this thread be renamed? The newsgroup is "alt.binaries.starwars" without the hyphen.

Quick question....has anyone made a cover for the 'When Star Wars Ruled The World' posts? By the way, anyone have the
The RowMan - Supplemental Collection discs that can post?

If anyone is still unsure about what is available on Usenet in the newsgroups, I suggest spending 5 minutes over at Newzbin which is a Usenet search engine.

For example, this link tells you roughly what is actually available on alt.binaries.starwars and this link shows what is available if the words "star wars" are typed into the search field.

I also have another tip for those UK based ntl customers that I know come here.

The ntl servers have been rubbish lately and have come back to form in the last day or two but thier retension at the moment is lousy.

For some reason, if you use news.virgin.net instead of the usual ntl server, it works, its free and the retension is far better.

This may have been a stop-gap arrangement during the ntl server problems so it may not last.........

Russ, I think you'll find that if you ping news.virgin.net a few times, the IP resolves to the same group of servers as news.ntli.net, news.ntlworld.com, news.tesco.net, etc., so I cannot understand why the retention would be any better.

Myself: I have hard-coded all the IPs into Newsbin Pro, and I just hammer them all...

Tis strange but true..........

Whilst news.cable.ntlworld.com was virtually 100% down over the past 2 weeks, the news.virgin.net was getting 90% of headers.

Earlier today, ntl was only getting headers back to the 2nd March and the Virgin server was getting headers back to 24th February.

I know there have been major problems and they may take time to catch up on that server.

Hey gang,

Once I finish up the GKar set (I'm on RoTJ to re-start tonight) I plan on posting bh001 and bh002 to a.b.starwars. For info check out the "babyhum" thread...they are both very good additions to your collections.

If you have any requests for SW DVDs...you can make them here. I have a fairly decent Star Wars collection...and if I have them I'll oblige. My sorta' current list of SW DVDs is available via PM.

Soon we may have another helping to post the SW DVDs on a.b.starwars too.

Henceforth, I'll keep OT.com up to speed with what I'm posting on a.b.starwars in this forum.

lol - I've been a master of bit torrent for a couple of years, yet always heard of the riches offered by newsgroups - damn thing is I haven't a clue on how to go about getting to the premier stuff @ star wars newsgroup. Basically I've been obtaining my re-edits via torrent and would like to get into the realm of newgroups!

I'm on AOL in the UK and it would seem they've abolished their newsgroup reader - they link to 'google groups' which features usenet but the alt.binaries isn't in there - basically I'm a fish out of water - could someone enlighten me either here or via PM on how his business works - some browsing of yahoo search results for 'alt.bin...' leads me 2 various dead ends

How do I subscribe? Is it necessary to pay the $s for a quality service? What's it like in the UK?

I'll edit the heck out of this when I know what's going on - soz if I appear like a flake lol

Your best bet is to read the Usenet Tutorial? thread in this forum.

The best tip you will find there is to read this tutorial.

I too am in the UK with ntl. Their servers are usually pretty good but when they do screw up, I have a back-up account at AstraWeb. 13 quid for 65Gb if you are interested.

Also, check out the search facility at Newzbin to see what is currently on the newsgroups.

Have you actually got set up on the newsgroups now??

Things are a wee bit quiet on a.b.sw but there are still plenty of things to be had.

People who use newsgroups and torrents generally say that the two systems complement each other very well. Bring this forum into the equation as well and pretty much everything to do with Star Wars is covered.

Yup - I'm doing a huge update of numerous groups that look tasty (I'm using GrabIt with your server tip - which seems a good rate) - definitely a compliment to BT and thanks to your help with the guides I hope to get some decent stuff Thanking you - this has been a dark corner to me 4 2 long

You seem to have taken to the Usenet newsgroup lark fairly easily.

Lets just hope that a few others read how easy it was for you and follow suit.

Cost still seems to be the main issue.

However, using my suggestion of $25/£13 for 65GB probably works out cheaper than what many would donate to torrent sites for the same amount of downloaded data.

But, as stated previously, a mixture of torrents and newsgroups gives the best balance.

Not sure whether Giganews is available worldwide, but it is an excellent service with outstanding article retention. Currently their pricing is unlimited monthly dl for $25 USD.

Now let's just hope that the DrGonzo trilogy makes its way to the ng . . . patiently waiting for a nice 16x9 transfer. . .

And a big thanks to all the posters who've made the past couple of months quite enjoyable on the sw front!!!!
