Thanks for sharing it Arnie.d! We're lookin' forward to the new improved one.
In going from V8 to X9 you'll completely bypass the W's :-P
However, in practice you must take into account the "fuckwit factor". Just talk to Darth Mallwalker...

Thank you Arnie.d for the beautiful capture and for making this transfer available!
It's wonderful to see STAR WARS "smearfree" again, it was a long time ago. It's sad this Laserdisc had a few frames missing and a bad colortiming (but this movie will always have some sort of defect on homevideo it seems). Looking forward to your improved one, keep up the good work.

Jedi KnightSo this project wll actually be released and finished unlike the X0, which sadly turned out to be the biggest vaporware in star wars fandom probably ever, except for the sequel trilogy episodes 7-9 Lucas said he would make and then decided not to.
Their site has not been updated since what 2006, now going on to 2010 with not a single frame of footage finished or released.
I know they had real jobs and families and they said they were not operating on any time table but they started the project as far as i know before the 2004 set was released, since then in 2006 the gout was released.
By time it is released dvd will be obsolete, since their won't be a blu ray X0 transfer what was the point?
They won't get even the resolution the gout has coming from the master tape, and he very idea of working with ancient 70's tech like laserdisc in the era of blu ray is sad, just to restore a watchable copy of star wars.
I only know of 2 companies who won't put out the real theatrical films in their catalogs, Lucasfilm and Disney. Forcing people to hold onto their laserdiscs to watch films that should have already been on dvd, and the fact that disney is somewhat doing this now on blu ray but skipped the dvd era is a joke. Never mind Lucas companies shoddy dvd star wars transfers and non acceptance of the blu ray standard.
The one set of films i would get a blu ray player for star wars are non existant.
This is not a slight at any of the fine laserdisc transfers going on here only that Lucas Should be doing the work not the fans, it is kind of backward if you ask me.
And i don't mean working from a laserdisc master either. Criterion is beginning to release some of Lucas idol Kurosawas works on blu ray, why cannot he spend the money and have a similar thing done for star wars from newly struck elements and new telecine and scan of the oot?

Jedi KnightI'm really excited about this project- I've never seen the SC, so it will be interesting to watch, especially since most of the versions of the trilogy I've seen in the last 15 years (DC/Faces/GOUT) came from the same source.
Plus- the X9 is such a phenomenal player, I'm sure the results will be great.
"...the HLD-X9 is often regarded as the very best laserdisc player ever built. It was designed for double duty playing both standard laserdiscs and the Japanese MUSE high-definition laserdiscs (which require a MUSE decoder and high-definition television). For this purpose, it has the advanced comb filter from the LD-S9 and a special narrow-bandwidth laser. I have seen this player in action. It is a massive piece of equipment, dwarfing most other LD players. I'm not sure exactly what kind of electronic magic is built into it, but the HLD-X9 produces an amazingly sharp and noiseless image that cannot be matched by any other laserdisc player I've ever seen." That's really only true if he cares one iota for the original unaltered trilogy. He clearly doesn't. The artist does reserve a lot of control over their work, and one of the things GL set out to do from the beginning was to have total control over his films.
Is it ridiculous and dumb that he has such contempt for the original cuts? Absolutely. But don't expect him to change his attitude anytime soon. If you want to see an older cut of a film that the filmmaker has completely renounced, don't expect anybody but you and the other fans to make that happen. It's like the Moroder soundtrack for Metropolis, or Bad Religion's "Into the Unknown." Sometimes an artist just gets it into their head that they don't like something they've done, and if they've got the power to keep it under wraps, they will, to the best of their abilities. Wouldn't you?

Jedi KnightMielr i think its more the german foundation who was taked with the restoration released by Kino.
A lot of purists hated the garish color tinting and modern rock and roll score.
At that point at least it was better than the bad usa recut which was silent and the story was completely changed in its meaning in the subtitles.
That being my first exposure to the film its a wonder that at first i thought it was a horrible film. Without the organ score, the correct speed and a very bad cut up and lousy vhs print was all people had access to.
Was Lang alive to comment on what he thought of Moroders version?

No, he died in 1976.
I like the Moroder version a lot- it was the first version of the film I ever saw. My Mom took me to see it at a movie theater in NYC. I was able to get a copy of the laserdisc at a reasonable price a few years ago on eBay. I'm glad they're doing another restoration of it with the newly-found footage, but I'll always associate the film with the Moroder soundtrack (and I like the color tinting as well).

Cheddar MonkI just hope this new release of Metropolis is played back at the correct speed. The last official release looked beautiful and they actually used the music written for the movie but they screwed up the playback speed and had it running fast. Which in turn had them running around looking goofy. As well as marring the score as they performed it in time to the footage.
