First of all, I really enjoyed this capture! :) Do you have any clue if there exists DVNR-free LD's for the sequels as well? Saw something mentioned about Empire somewhere in this thread?

Doing my best to keep track of all the editions and releases but it's a rather vast ocean..

Yes, as far as I know every SW-LD released before 1993 was devoid of any DVNR, the US SWE LD's (Special Widescreen Edition) and the Japanese equivalents, the Special Collection, was the first and last quality release of the films in their original widescreen aspect ratio before the DVNR, before the dark times.  ;)

Yeah, but not everyone thinks the THX versions are lesser versions, at the time of their release they were seen by many as the best the films had ever looked on video, most people prefer them to the older releases. I liked many aspects of that release as well, the audio is definitely the best part on those releases IMO.

If the older masters had been used instead, if they even exist(ed), people would've complained anyway as one of the most popular and influental films of all time deserved better than being presented as bonus material to the bastard child in that case, and sourced from a 15 or 20 year old LD-master. Not even cheap pornos are treated like this.

I've actually never heard them getting much praise but in the end, what you think of them won't matter much since your wallet is speaking higher than your opinion, every SE version of the films have made insane amounts of money, and that's the only thing that matters to Lucasfilm.

Thanks for all the kind feedback I got for this one and to everyone who help seed it, I'm unfortunately not able to do so any longer as I lost this in a HD crash.  As a perfectionist and obsessive freak of Star Wars I could never enjoy it and watch it myself for what it is, as I only see the problem with it:

This is representative of how bad the LD look sometimes, but I want to color correct it, I will fix the colors on a new one or Chewtobacca or Mallwalker or Lucas or... 

Are those shots within seconds from each other or from separate discs/caps?  In general, despite quality issues, I find the color pallet most pleasing on the Technidisc.  If it were more consistent or could be applied to a different source of higher quality it would be my preferred look for the film.

No, sorry the ones at the bottom was just me doing a quick color correction to demonstrate the problem.

You're welcome, Baronlando. :) Unfortunately my capture of it is quite crude; the recorder captured it with a too low gamma, and I must admit that I did a quite lousy job when I set the contrast, combine that with the already wildly inconsistent contrast of the LD itself and you get a quite murky transfer. Don't know if it's something that can be partly corrected when playing with your TV-settings.

It's actually the above reasons that makes this transfer to look oversaturated and yellow, when corrected it's easier to see that it's mostly red/pink - shifted instead.

frank678, I'm pretty sure you can make it look slightly better when playing with the levels, but that's not how it's meant to be, sorry about that. The red and the saturation is definitely higher once Side 2 kicks in, that is right after Tarkin's "We will then crush the rebellion with one swift stroke" People's faces tends to burn in many places from then on. One place where the contrast goes out of whack is in the first part of the garbage compactor scene and then in the Death Star battle the levels are unfortunately all over the place. Oh, well. Even with these problems this LD is still one of my favorite video transfers of the film.

I'm gonna be seeding this one for a bit.
