AALENFAE'S PREQUEL TRILOGY EDIT

A conservatively ambitious fan-edit

Cat's been out of the bag for a long time - I'm working on all three prequels. Here's a brief rundown of prospective and/or completed changes to these movies.

I'm using the phrase "Conservatively Ambitious" to describe my edits. What does this mean? Well, it means that I'm not planning on radically changing the stories and plot points of these films. I'm working under the assumption that the movies really aren't so bad. They just need to be refined. But they need to be refined RADICALLY. So these edits are very ambitious. There are tons of audio/visual changes in addition to strict cuts, and what makes up a "typical" fanedit. 

The Phantom Menace

Overall/Nonspecific Changes:

-Color correction overall. TPM is disgustingly faded and dull.

-"Real" on-set sound effects to make CGI environments feel more real

-Classic music and sounds where applicable. (TPM is the best of the prequels for classic-sounding music and sound effects, interestingly.)

-Redubbing Neimoidians. (This will be me. I do weird voices pretty well.)

-Redubbing Jake Lloyd. (I NEED an actor for this. Maybe a woman who can do a boyish voice?)

-Limiting repetitive/obvious exposition. 

-Limiting STUPID Jar Jar as much as possible. Jar Jar's presence itself isn't bad. It's just his stupidity (or at least unbelievable stupidity) that ruins his character.

Army of the Republic (Attack of the Clones)

Overall/Nonspecific Changes:

-Color correction everywhere. Mostly on Kamino and Geonosis. And removing stupid oranges and cyans.

-More prominent, real "on-set" sounds. To make CGI environments feel more realistic.

-Recoloring blue blasts to red.

-Classic sounds and musical cues where applicable.

-Limiting bad CGI

-Entirely removing Anakin/Padme romance. It's possible. Believe me.

Revenge of the Sith

Overall/Nonspecific Changes:

-Color correction to better match an OT feel. Less yellows and cyans. 

-More prominent, real "on-set" sounds like we hear in the OT (Clunks, bumps, footsteps)

-Recoloring blasters. It's almost impossible to recolor EVERY blue blast, as that would take ages. But many (if not most) of the blue blasts are now green (in space) and red (on the ground). 

-Recoloring/reanimating lightsabers to match OT colors and appearance. This includes making them glow and flicker more. 

-Lots of classic sound effects and music where possible. Mostly ANH music and sounds.

-"Clicks" added to Clone Trooper dialogue to sound like ANH stomtroopers.

-Limiting CGI by reframing, replacing, trimming and cutting superfluous CGI

-Generally trying my best to create an OT feel.

Do you mean the scene with Mace, Palpatine and Anakin? 

I've got some pretty serious plans for that part, but I'm not sure if I can do them, so I won't get anybody's hopes up.



Videos are definitely on their way. I'm rendering something huge at the moment, but I'll work on getting some videos up ASAP.   

This shot occurs in a different place in my edit - I edited in a moving background and camera movement to match.

The reason for this (temporary) effect is for continuity in my edit.

Mouth replacement. I cut out Padme's lines, but the shot was essential.

Face replacement.

Just letting people know I'm making lots of progress, and I'll have videos up in the next few hours!

In the meantime, I've made numerous more changes.

UPDATE:

New changes include...

-Restructured and repaired Obi-Wan vs. Grievous. New effects and everything. No more "OH I DON'T THINK SO!", less hand chopping.

-Removed Kit Fisto and Eeth Koth from LAAT/i when Mace Windu goes to arrest Palpatine

-Heavily repaired Mace Windu vs. Palpatine

-Anakin participates in the murder of Windu to a greater extent (Way more taken with the Dark Side)

-Removed spoken Darth Vader references

-March on the Jedi Temple has an interesting twist ;)

-Removed Obi and Yoda storming the Temple

-Streamlined Obi-Wan and Yoda's plotting. 

NEW PLANNED CHANGES:

-Restructure Bail Organa intercepting Obi-Wan's message. This will require me to film new material entirely.

-Making new 3D environment for Yoda vs. Sideous. Gives me much more flexibility in fixing the battle. 

Yeah, I definitely agree. That's really just a placeholder until I finish a 3D set piece that will blend more realistically. 

wow, I really like your ideas of changing even the most subtle details (e.g. Padme's facial expression). I'll definitely be keeping up on the progress of this project. Keep up the awesome work!

Excited to see video footage.

I'm really not that skilled with 3D modeling. I use Anim8or, which is basically the MS Paint of 3D modeling. (But it can look pretty good with some work and photoshop)
It'd be great if somebody could help me out with some 3D shots.


I'm sorry I wasn't able to get videos up yesterday. Definitely today. Check back in a few hours, and something should be up! 

This looks like promising work. I'm definitely excited to see some videos, as well. I find that edits which incorporates digitally altered things/effects are most effective.

A video is currently uploading, but my internet sucks. It's been taking forever.

I love your suggestion about making the audience think that Vader is a different guy from Anakin. I was afraid I'd have to cut Vader in armour at the end of the movie, but that could work really well - especially if I took other Vader lines for his conversation with Sidious at the end. 

Grievous will definitely be more BA. He doesn't get his hands cut off and his voice will be more menacing. (Still working on voice) 
But given the source footage, it's a little difficult to make him die in a more epic fashion.  

I'm working in HD.  

And don't you worry! Making it match the OT is one of my highest goals. 

Yeah, youtube's been really crazy about videos these days. 

My last Star Wars video there got blocked too. 

I'll see what I can do. Hopefully the youtube link will be active long enough for at least somebody to see.
