Return of Black Angel

I never saw this, but I'm sure some of you folks did. Pretty sweet.

That's awesome....BUT THIS IS HORRIFYING:

Tanaka: I remember when we were working on the Star Wars restoration, that was a different process. I think we optically recreated interpositives. But in order to do this, it went through some kind of warm chemical bath cleansing. The weird thing about Star Wars was that it was made up of different film stocks, so it went through this bath and they didn’t know what would come out on the other end...

Parker: You mean if it would survive or not? ‘George we might destroy your entire film, but it’s... we think it’s going to be OK.’

Tanaka: There’s a space battle shot and a close-up on Hans Solo, and the original negative is coming out of this cleaning solution and it’s just acetate.

Parker: It’s all clear. Oh no, did the bath dissolve it?

Tanaka: Yeah, it dissolved it, depending on the film stock.

Of course, when a lot of capable digital filmmakers get involved, the possibilities of new effects and enhancements—the stuff that director’s cuts and special editions are made of—is on the table. Parker noted that there is at least one VFX shot the team wants to add, but they didn't have time to do so if the goal was a Mill Valley screening.

So attendees and near future viewers can expect an original edit as last seen in 1980.

My God! It's like their go-to is to alter Star Wars related stuff now.
"Oh is that restoration Star Wars related? Well what should we change before the release."

JUST RESTORE! DON'T ALTER!

Wow, great news.  After reading that article, makes me think that it's a wonder any film ever survives.

Indeed.

It reminds me of that mind-boggling story of how all those canisters of film from Blade Runner were sitting on a pallet waiting to be junked and were saved only because the actual order to junk them was never given.

I also heard Universal threw out a lot of their archived film material in the 60's just so they could make more room.

I guess that's what happens when you privatize cultural heritage.
