well, i was shocked too. but what can we do other then to complain to disney. though, i will certainly check the disc out myself, but from what i've heard i better stick to the itunes version.

Suddenly considering the '97 laserdisc the reference seems shaky. It also calls the 2003 DVD into question which we assume is right because it looks similar to the '97 release.
I'm not sure what the '87 source is here (I assume a LD or VHS), but it looks A LOT like the '08 release's colors.
Don't get me wrong, I have no doubt Disney has reanimated the '08 version, but those colors may not be as wrong as we all think.

The '08 colors aren't wrong, in fact.
There was a discussion in which people who have seen the original Technicolor prints said that the colors match the BD, and in fact, most video versions were sourced from Eastman prints.

Guide updated: Indicated that Non-Lowry Cinderella is synced to Platinum Edition's audio track and waffled about '08 vs '12 release (still not recommended of course).
Sleeping Beauty recommendations revised based on the colors seen in that picture above and a link to the comparison pic added.
Sword in the Stone: Tentatively commented on BD and linked screenshot post above.
Mary Poppins: Added my own opinion that Lowry used too much edge enhancement.
All the above screenshots linked are now in my own ImageShack account, not hot linked. I already lost some Peter Pan pics by doing that.
I still wouldn't mind some more opinions regarding PP, btw.

I think Molly was making fun of the fact that '50s-'80s Eastman prints suck as far as color fade and QC. We film collectors lovingly refer to films on Eastman stock as spectacular "Crimsonvision" or beautiful "Magentacolor."

Jedi KnightUpdated first post again to clarify some language and some slight recommendation changes.
Bambi: Mentioned crawling fur might be present on Platinum Edition and that the Diamond Edition is considered one of the least damaged Blu-ray transfers (even preserving ripple glass effects). BD is added as an 'acceptable alternative'.
Alice in Wonderland: Some minor wording changes and elaborated on digital alterations on BD. Recommendation is unchanged.
Peter Pan: Clarified edition differences a bit better. Recommendation also unchanged. Further comment was made on the damage done to the BD in restoration.
Edit: Can anyone confirm that the screenshots here: http://whiggles.landofwhimsy.com/writings/dvdimage-tramp.html are accurate representations of the Lady and the Tramp releases?
The Platinum releases don't typically show this much loss in detail and color replacement.

Jedi KnightActually, to follow up the Lady and the Tramp question... has anyone read anything about the Diamond Edition?
Usually I can find someone on some forum complaining about how wrong Disney got things... but not for LatT. Is it quietly correct (like Bambi) or do people not particularly care about that film?
Also, I was thinking that a few releases, such as the Special Edition Peter Pan and the two 2-disc Alice In Wonderland DVDs are pretty good transfers, but with colors a bit off.
There's no reason we couldn't come up with some short avisynth scripts to color correct these that people could plug into DVD Rebuilder and automatically create a better disc for themselves.
Alice is good, but the colors are a bit on the dull side. Her hair just doesn't seem as yellow as it should be among other issues.
Peter Pan suffers from being on the cold side, a tweak with ColorYUV could fix that in no time. The Diamond edition would probably even be a good reference.
Thoughts? Suggestions? Scripts?

I know the P&S of LatT is wrong. It is a made-up thing, done after the fact. Basically, they just cropped the widescreen version and called it P&S. The original version was a drastically altered version, with moved cels, reframed shots, etc.

Actually, you are describing the fullscreen version correctly.
Pan and Scan is the most used process of fitting a widescreen film to a 4x3 picture, which was used here as well.
The "Academy ratio" version of LATT was indeed prepared especially for cinemas not yet equipped with scope.

a sort of preview review for the upcoming blu-ray of the little mermaid was posted on blu-ray.com forums and some screenshots
Hi all,
In all my time as a DVD/Blu-ray reviewer, I've never been more excited than when I came home to the review disc of the 2D Little Mermaid Blu-ray (Region B European) last night. I'm a huge Little Mermaid fan, so it's particularly exciting for me.

I'll be uploading some 1080p PNG images in the next few hours and happy to answer any questions you might have. For now here's my initial thoughts.
The new transfer is exactly that - definitely a new scan and one that shows some big improvements over the last. This has created the slight downside of cel mattes visible around some characters in certain scenes, but this is part of the pre CAPS animation process and unavoidable. Textures are much finer and there is so much more detail in background animations.
I have been particularly dismayed by the use of DNR on some Disney catalogue titles, but I just can't see that much, if any has been used here. It's truly a beautiful image. Some of the animation is crisper and clearer than others - the opening has always been particularly hazy, although in this instance I've no doubt this is by intention.
The new colour timing is fantastic and far more balanced and I dare say accurate than previously. Its as if the white balance has been re-set as a point of reference throughout, as the image looks a little whiter than before, replacing some of that yellow hue that permeated the platinum DVD.
Additionally, I have an original animation cel of a scene of Ariel and Eric and compared to the same frame in the new transfer, its incredible faithful - I'd say just about spot on.
Moving to the new extra features, they are more bountiful than I think we had assumed.
All of the original DVD features are included and to whoever was asking about "The Little Match Stick" girl short - that's in full 1080p now (intro still in SD). The documentary is still presented in window-boxed 480p strangely enough.
The new deleted scene "Harold The Merman" is very short at just a few minutes, but includes the newly recorded audio with Pat Caroll reprising the voice of Ursula. So that's that mystery solved.
The best new feature is the 17 minute long "Howard's Lecture", which includes large snippets of Howard speaking to the assembled disney animators with recollections interspersed from animators and co-directors John Musker and Ron Clements the former of who chokes up while recallsing one Howard anecdote. He is truly missed.
The Carly Rae Jepsen rendition of "Part of Your World" is pretty bad I'm afraid to say.
There is only one new pre-movie trailer is for the "Disney Infinity" game. I would think the U.S. release would have more.
Anyways, hope this sates some of the Mermaid fans. Back in a few hours with PNG's.
