Purple TIE Fighters

Just saw this story from Gizmodo : http://gizmodo.com/5703593/the-original-tie-fighters-were-purple which cites http://www.therpf.com/f10/tie-fighters-original-color-not-what-you-think-101082/ as its source.

I admit, the two-tone nature of the TIEs leaves me not fully convinced.

If you read the thread, someone mentions the twoface-esque paint being a test so they could shoot both the grey & maroon schemes in one go to compare them on film without having to do two seperate shoots or do some sort of composite.

Ah, here it is (from "Nwerke" on therpf.com):

The half-and-half wasn't the intentional final scheme, just a means to get an in-camera comparison with one take.

So they were using that to decide whether to go with all maroon or all grey.

It was a one eyed, one horned, flying purple TIE fighter...

These guys were literally inventing the wheel, so there's probably tons of test footage we've never seen. Several of the explosions seen in the Making of Star Wars appear to be test shots.

I find the revelation about the LED engine lights on the TIE's really neat, as the original Kenner toys had them to simulate laser fire. LED's are so ubiquitous now, it's hard to recall how cool they were having them on a kid's toy in the 70's.

Where were you in '77?

Let's hope that in ESB:R adywan decides to return the TIE fighters to their original glorious maroon!

They could run a maroonathon!

Maroon would have been interesting.  A Crimson Empire would look pretty sinister as well.

Interesting alright.  If they had gone that route, I imagine it would seem completely normal to us all these years later.  We might even be having a discussion about how someone uncovered some old pics of how they tested making the fighters white...... "Man, check out these old pics.  They almost went with fighters that had no color - not nearly as menacing.  That would have been really weird looking. Good thing they stuck with maroon"

;-)

Wouldn't have looked bad.  It does have a sort of sinister look to it.

Uggh ... That definately does nothing for me. :-(

God doesn't think in terms of black or white - or even shades of gray - but in big, bright, bold hues of blue and orange.

In the recent "Creating the Impossible" doc (05:00) there's the ESB shot as the Falcon dives away from the crossing Star Destroyers, the far one is purple.  But if this was a production shot, why are the lasers painted on?  Maybe this is just a bad encode, anyone else see this?  Then a few minutes later there's an orange SD.
