Sounds really great!  Also given this is a 16mm film, I think the mouse droppings, etc. add to the vintage feel of it and will make it an all around better experience!

Don't worry, there will definitely be enough ant trails, bird poops, and mouse droppings to satisfy even the curmudgeonliest afficienado. :)

Adywan had finished his color corrections on one of my captures of Reel 1.  He had to apply two different color corrections because there were differences on either side of a splice partway through the reel.  I haven't had a chance to review the video file yet, but the screen grabs he sent look fabulous:

PSB reel 1 adywan corrections

I'll be shipping him captures of reel 2 next (there are three reels).

My first impressions are that I was wise to approach Ady.  :)

p.s. - please note that all mouse droppings were left unscathed.

Indeed you were! Those results look amazing. The print still looks like a film but just a newer, less color shifted film. This will be amazing to watch.

Perhaps a color corrected Puggo Grande after this...(I know, wishful thinking)

 Yay!

The color issues with the PG were an entirely different situation.  PG was heavily red-shifted... PSB just has poor white balance.  With PG, I was comfortable making a judgement call as how much red to remove before it started looking unnatural. There's no way normal color could be restored to PG, it would be like asking Adywan to polish a turd (especially reel 2).  However, I think that with his skills PSB will have excellent color balance.

I suppose this has already been asked: Any plans for Puggo Strikes Back?

Wait, sorry, but what do you mean? We are talking about the color correction for Puggo Strikes Back. The color comparison screen caps above are from it.

Puggo only commented on the Puggo Grande because of a foolhardy idea I had.

LOL. Then we'd have the Puggo trilogy... See all three films like never before: in all their 16mm glory COMPLETE WITH MOUSE DROPPINGS AND DUST!

Of course, that's not a bad thing :-)

Yes, I have already been granted access to two 16mm prints of ROTJ.  That will complete the droology.

Now, if NSF would just grant me 12 units of release time for artistic sabbatical, I could get these dang transfers done!!

TWO?! Is one of them subtitled or are they both in extraordinary condition?

RE: Puggo Strikes Back!

I just received one in the mail two days ago - haven't looked at it yet.  The other is in someone else's possession, and I don't think it's subtitled. Both are supposedly in excellent condition, but of course you can't really tell for sure until you project it large enough to scrutinize. You can't see scratches (or mouse droppings) just by eye-balling the film.

Looking very nice, good job Ady!

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

When the Puggo trilogy will be done and the Blu Ray deleted scenes available, then maybe it could be time for "The War of the Stars part 2"! (If I still have "Star Wars power" left in me....)

Cool color correction by the way.

That would be a dream come true... We can get to see what kind of sequel Lucas would have been forced to make if Star Wars wasn't a success. So, I expect we can expect a miraculously resurrected Vader. :-)

By the way, I'm also excited about Puggo Strikes Back, just as it is.

I've got it, but I haven't read it yet.

Wow!  Looks really great!  How close are you to finishing the project (not trying to rush you, just curious)?  At this point you need to send Adywan the remaining reels, choose the best color corrected version for each scene, crop the borders and resize to HD, do the final encode of the video, and mux in the audio.   Anything else?

Having access to two reels of ROTJ is awesome!  More chances for a better picture in each scene.

Are you planning to redo the HD version of PG before Return?  Since you kept the original captures it might go pretty quick.  Maybe you could send those to Ady as well for color correction.

You might be surprised.  I know I was when I first saw what he did with his HD Special Edition of Episode IV.  If the color is really bad on PG and one setting won't fix everything satisfactorily, maybe different rules can be applied (do whatever it takes to fix the color to make it look the best it can).

If you still need convincing about what is possible, check this out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yiJ9fy1qSFI
